View Full Version : Are melbournes club really that good?

I've come to the conclusion that melbourne clubs lack what other clubs in other states and countries have.
Most clubs in other countries are custom built. They dont just grab an old building and wack on a sound system and some lights! Eg. Metro and QBH.
Look at sydney their 2 main clubs City Live and Home where built from scratch making the acoustics just right. Unlike some clubs in melbourne.
What do you guys think?

I think you are a bit patriotic there---I've been to the most popular clubs in other states--and find that our clubs have more atmosphere--and a closeness.. now I would never endorse places like metro or qbh---
but places like salt that was the old warehouse rox , and Q bar- that was the old capitol---nothin beats it...
basically these old shitty clubs as shells, had a brilliant potential to be rocking hot spots... I think too many new buildings are being made as it is---and often you'll find brand new clubs will fall thru in the end--its better to start a club in an exsisting building---
our club land is hollier than thou---and if the old buildings work than so be it..
they're clean( at the start of the night) and they rock harder than ever or anywhere in aus has before!
word!

I agree with you i know salt is one of the best clubs. But i just think that clubs in melbourne need to build up the hype of their venues. I remember when Metro use to have Mark James, Simon and Jason in their dj line up. They should get their djs sorted out before they start collapsing....but sure melbourne is the clubbing capital of australia (as it was said on muzik magazine)

Yep i'd endorse that. Although I'm from London and you don't have anything like Fabric or The End, Melbourne has the best selection of clubs, and line ups of DJs.

I agree- Melbournes clubs rock pretty hard. Melbournes old architecture and the hidden alleyways everywhere make it a fuckin rocking place for the little known raves that are put on sometimes. To construct new clubs from scratch would be a tragedy!!! The overused and rebuilt venues are what gives Melbourne clubs character and makes them authentic and MAD!!!

I think every city has it's good and it's bad. I live in Sydney but have partied a fair bit in Melbourne (can't comment about the other states) and to say that either is better is a judgement call based on personal opinion. While we have awesome venues like the above mentioned City Live and Home (definately add Arq to that list as well) we also have renovated shops and @!#$-holes like Eden, Club 77 and the Icebox. Don't know if your clubs have "more atmosphere--and a closeness.." though - as quoted above by naDJa. Atmosphere is not just the installation, it also depends on the crowd, the dj and dare I say it, the quality of the cookies. (This last factor definately contributes to the closeness). I think Sydney and Melbourne are on par in all three areas although you seem to have less 'roid boys' (damn). You do however have a much better version of Welcome 2001 for NYE and I am most jealous of that fact.

money makes the clubs in Sydney sound good, but money also kills the vibe that is achieved in all the wicked little venues in Melb.
If you are taking QBH and the Metro as examples of Melbourne clubbing, try some other venues.
Typical Sydney person togotothe biggest and the most ostentatious clubs Melb has to offer! That is not what that city's clubbing is about.
Back to sound, the Metro in Sydney has some of the worst sound I have heard out clubbing in this state and as said, Home would have the same sound as Salt. I think, actually that Home wouldhave worse sound as the main dance floor bleeds upwards and reverberates really badly. Salt has great sound, but they are hideously loud. The bass goes right through me on that main dance floor. Too loud bass can rupture intestines like a high C can rupture glass! But again, it can show you how good the sound at Salt is.
The best sound and vibe found at Home is in the little rooms just as you would find if you went to some of the smaller, hipper and absolutely Melbourne, venues.
The best sound system to be found in Sydney is reportedly at the old, nelwy refurbished Palladium. So this brings you argument to a moot point as this is not a newly built club but an old reclaimed space.

Q Bar was good about 2 years ago, a good crowd. But now its turned to @!#$ because all of the people who are continuing from the weekend on tuesday night (are fucked) go there and its not a good vibe during the week. The DJ's I'd say are alright, but depends if you like your music soft or really bangin........If you like the former try Q Bar.

Huh worst sound in Sydney is at the Metro??? Are you fucking serious? No you can't be! Metro has absolutely awesome sound. Home has @!#$ sound. Been to Salt and didn't think much of the place, people or music. Sound was good from what i can remember but nothing stand-outish.

As for Melb Clubs i think they totally lack atmosphere and vibe. Melbourne parties are far superior to ones in sydney but when it comes to clubs i think we have it better (Sydney). Most melbourne club nights i have attended are either exceptionally glam or extremely seedy (i have been to Seven, Salt, Chevron, Billboards, CBD, Dome, Cage, QBH and a few others).

talking about the sound in SALT, apparently they had a sound system upgrade which cost $3 Million - when they changed to Salt from the Warehouse.

If you have to ask, you can't possibly have clubbed here.

I'm not going to get into the Sydney vs. Melbourne debate. It's pointless and ultimately, unwinnable by either side.

I will say having travelled throughout the Americas and Asia, we (being Melbourne/Sydney) certainly kick all their asses for clean, non-commercial, safe and variety-full clubbing life. No-one else comes close to our standard of enjoyment in these regards.

We are very lucky!

Hello naDJa,

Seros and Meeks want to know what you are doing here....

BTW - Most melbourne clubs are shite. Look at the @!#$ on this string,
Q-Bar rocks, Seven rocks - they are both dingy shitholes.

Melbourne has the art and the vibe, we just need a good building to put them in.

The Q Bar in Sydney is hardly what I would call a club though. It certainly isn't considered one, more a seedy dive with background music, ooh that's what you said (and I can only agree).

I haven't been to the Q Bar in Melbourne for about 10 years when it used to be downtown yups-ville with dodgy bands. Does this mean it is a club now (sorry for my ignorance)?

Melbourne clubs have one thing which sydney clubs never could and never will have and that my friends is style. Melbourne is glam. No where else in Australia do we put ourselves together so well as to ooze taste and style. Im not being a snobby bitch im just saying that, you wont find the class you find in melbourne in sydney. But then again we are way behind our european counterparts. Wow. Now clubs in europe they are mind blowing, Im talking full-open air clubs...litetally on the beach. And with are climate .....why couldnt we try it/. Why??? Because you would have to run a million permits and the councils would never allow it,,thats why. One thing i give all clubs in melb or sydney is they are friendly, clean and definitely safe.

one thing i'd just like to add is that who gives a @!#$ whether a club has been specially built with big shiny toilets or sparkling new floors. that doesn't impress me..that actually puts me off. whats wrong with those shabby rundown clubs? teryaki just wouldn't be the same if it was at heat or QBH. and anyway, as long as you enjoy your company and have a fucken good time then who cares if what the building looks like. go the shabby melbourne clubs!!
