Quite a few stores are still selling at high prices, others have dropped significantly. The cheapest I have found is http://www.centre.net.au/Compact_Flash_0007TY.html

2gig Ultra II CF $49.68
4gig Ultra II CF $88.19
8gig Ultra II CF $181.30
2gig Extreme III $64.13
4gig Extreme III $108.78
8gig Extreme III $207.66

I'm gonna get myself a 4GB Extreme III :ahoy: Sounds too good to be true but it seems pretty legit. I guess I'll find out soon enough.

Wow, that is cheap!!

Thanks for the heads up! I know eBay can be a haven for dodgy/rebranded Sandisk cards. If it's coming from a retail outlet, it should be legit!

Awesome - I would love to get a few more 2gb Extreme III's. Thanks for the link :)

I have 2 x 2gb and 2 x 1gb Extreme III's bought from a camera store and they have been great. I usually shoot continuously when doing horse photo shoots and it handles it brilliantly in the largest JPEG. I have only used it with RAW when not using as many continuous shots and no probs. One of my 2 gb cards has shat itself though - I can only view half of the images - so I'm sending it off to be salvaged!

ETA: I should probably try the recovery software it comes with, first.

not if youre using something like the hasselblad h3d. youre looking at 50mb per photo so 16GB would get you roughly 320 images. i dont think theres too many people who arent pros with serious gear forking out that much for flash cards. then again there are some seriously hardcore wankers with too much money who love having the latest and greatest :stroke:

makes me wonder when the mp3 player manufacturers are gonna get their shit together and release higher capacity solid state players. or even something that can utilise high capacity flash cards.... hdd's are just too fragile for the beating most people give their mp3 players.

8192 megabytes for $207.66, huh?

Wonder what my 4 megabyte SmartMedia Card from 2000 is worth today. Cost me $149. :|

8000 megabytes actually, less formatting losses.

also if you're still sporting an iPod mini you could grab an 8GB ultraII and double the size of your ipod!

Something to keep in mind is that you can purchase a 2-8 gig CF card but if you are putting all your eggs (photos) in one basket and that basket (card) breaks (corrupts), you have lost all your work. Much safer practice to use a few 1 gig cards so if something does happen you will only lose some of your pics!

bassfreak - good point - but it really depends on the type of photography you are doing. When I'm just taking a random shots of the dogs, cats, trees whatever a 1GB card is fine. But when I'm taking horse photos for adverts I might take over 600 shots in a short space of time, and I can't ask the horse to wait whilst I change the CF card!

Rancho, so how did your CF card turn out when you got it?

they had run out of stock of 4 gigs so i got 2x 2 gb instead. theyre awesome cards and clearly legit. unfortunately they overcharged me which involved 2 phone calls to have it rectified....

I've put in an order at centre.net.au and amongst other things in my order I ordered a 8gb Sandisk card ($180)
and the reason why the CF cards are cheaper now is due to cost cutting at the company

On the basis of price and recommendation I ordered a 4GB Ultra II from centre.net.au and it just arrived. All looks kosher. Will give it try tonight and if all's good then Harbour Bridge here I come!

oh yeah forgot to mention, my extreme III cards both came with a serial for capturepro software. i havent had a chance to download/use it yet but ill give a brief review. not bad getting a $99 program with a $65 cf card ;D

I received my cards and was charged correctly, both work fine and I've started playing with captureONE as well.

i've also already used the RescuePro software that came with them to recover some pics from a friends SD card.

all good :)

So, I'm pretty much stocked with Ultra II, but since I saw this thread I thought I might could use another 4GB ExtremeIII... but, the economist in me decided to do a little experiment.

My results, on my Canon #)D, show equivalent results from Ultra II and Extreme III, in a burst.

Ultra II:

5fps: 11 frames total burst, repeated twice
3fps: 12, then 11

Extreme III:

5fps: 11, repeated twice
3fps: 12, then 11

Interesting? Yes. The only thing I can think that might make a difference is in startup time for another burst, but I'm skeptical that it is anything but camera-side hardware limited.

If you guys get a chance, please do an experiment so we can see if there is any real value in Extreme III for us real-lifel users.

Yeah I'm really happy with mine too. Shot around 270 frames at the harbour bridge on Sun, all in raw. I use Adobe Lightroom for editing, it's excellent but getting the right camera calibration for your raw files is a real bitch.

Whether or not there's a noticable difference with a 30d i'm not sure..

I'm currently using a Transcend 8GB and 4GB backup - it's so tempting to get more... faster... better...

... then I realise that the money could be spent on other stuff.:P
