View Full Version : Storing images whilst travelling

I'm off to Europe for my honeymoon in May and am starting to consider the best option for storing images whilst I am away. I will be taking the SLR and the point and shoot (and the video camera) away for 6 weeks so will need something small to save my images to.

So far I have come up with two options:

* Buy a photo or video ipod with the camera adapter and save my images to it - probably the 80GB?
Pro's: Cheaper option, small, light, can listen to music etc
Con's: obviously RAW images won't be viewable, and time for image transfer will probably take a while and drain battery, I already have a 40GB ipod which I rarely use except for on really long drives (not photo or video so not compatible with camera adaption), can't backup files - if it dies so does my images.

*Buy a small laptop 12" - 14" (apple) and store images on it, and if I want I can backup images on CD or DVD - I would be looking at secondhand iBook or PowerBook 12"/14" 1.33ghz or higher or purchasing new the 13" MacBook
Pro's: backup files, I can process RAW images if I have time, I can use when honeymoon is over (I would only use with soundcard or serato)
Con's: More expensive, heavier, takes up more space, I just bought a 17" MacBook Pro so I will have two laptops (17" is too big to take with me)

Any advice, anyone had experience using either items on a daily basis or to save images? I'm not sure which way to go, and will have to makeup my mind soon so I can factor it into the wedding/honeymoon budget!

Also if you've used the iBook G4, PowerBook G4 or Intel Duo 2 MacBook (13") with Serato or Abelton and a soundcard or know someone who does, any feedback welcome! (I will ask on the Music Production & Tech forum)

burn DVD's

2 copies

keep one, send one home. you're backing up your data and your loved ones get to snoop around your holiday pics meaning you won't have to waste time emailing them about where you are and what you did.

could get something like this nexto thingy.
look at the comment on the right of the page

"Memory Cards prices are constantly falling. Prediction is that they would become so cheap - so the end user will not re-use them, but keep them for good safe records."

now that would make things much easier. it'd probably stop me from taking so many stupid photos if i knew i would be buying using a brand new card each time the current one fills up. thats probably a good thing with the rate i take photos at.

Looks like I can get an X-DRIVE VP 8360 + 120 GIG HDD 5400 +Car Ch + Battery for $560 excluding tax. Although OH reckons we should get the MacBook and increase memory

iPods are USB1.1 only for photo transfers. Thats awfully slow if you've got a couple of gigs of photos to transfer.

Go with one of the photo vault things.

Thanks phunkdust - it seems I'm not really considering the iPod, and just looking at the + and - of a HDD with LCD or the Laptops and which one will provide better value in the long run. Something like the Xdrive could also act as an external hardrive at home, or I can use it to save files whenever I'm travelling or in more remote areas taking photos. The lappie I would use as part of my dj equip and it would be handy to be able to burn photos to DVD whilst travelling to safeguard photos.

its a question I asked before christmas :)

although funnily enough I didn't need more than the memory I took
same as I will be going to vietnam with 2gb of CF cards and that will probably be it
apart from the 1gb shoved in the powershot
but we're only in Nam for 6 days

Thanks nettsu will check it out :thumb: I am assuming I will be using the camera alot, and we are going to a couple of horse shows so that will probably mean I will use at least a 2GB card just for that :)
Not sure about the memory for video camera as we havent bought it yet.

just buy a stack of memory cards (they're cheap nowadays anyway) and like somebody else mentioned - burn them onto 2 DVDs, send one home, keep the other. you can find DVD burners everywhere nowadays (even in the most obscure places in peru).
mind you, i pretty much kept them all on the memory card as well as burned them onto CDs/DVDs...i couldnt bare the thought of deleting them off the card and risk having both CDs/DVDs somehow corrupt and die on me.

I'll be travelling for a year in Europe and have thought about just buying a digital storage where i can directly plug it into my camera. But i just bought a 15.4" Sony Vaio laptop where i can process my shots while overseas. It is just too hard for me to wait after a year when i arrive back home and then process the lot.

My laptop's HDD is already full and will be purchasing 500GB external HDD.
I did a bit of calculation. Basically every session is approx 2GB. 500/2 = 250 sessions. That should be plenty.

I use one of these, they are EXCELLENT, they are designed to be the best and have a beautiful screen, an 80GB hard drive and play movies for the flight. You simply put a CF or SD card in the top and can look at the pics or back them up to the hard drive. I carry it in a bum bag, take it out put a full card in, set it to back up, throw it back in the bag and continue on.

I've just come back from a trip on which I backed all my photos up onto my Creative Zen Vision. It was the easiest thing in the world and I was carrying as a music player anyway, so no extra kit. I don't know if it supports RAW images, though, although I don't see whay not.
