Silly little box at the top of inthemix was saying i hadn't posted in a while so i decided why not start a thread!
So Microsoft has come up with its own new standard for photo compression to replace the aging jpeg format! Discuss!

yeah, jpeg2000 is much improved over the initial jpeg format, but apparently this is supposed to be better although from the picture below by only a S/N margin of about 1db. Too bad it is spearheaded by microsoft.

Sorry for rehashing an old thread!
From a technical point of view, this can only be a good thing. The reality is that industry adoption is going to be tough, and they should probably have announced this with backing from a few of the manufacturers of equipment. Even if they had just one of either Canon or Nikon in their corner, MS's attempt would look much more credible.
Look at email and the limitations there. The technology is decades old, but trillions of dollars per day and the general day to day running of the entire world is reliant on it. It can be greatly improved, secured, made a lot more efficient. Yet it still (literally) makes the world go round in its current guise.
As is, unless you have hardware that's outputting this format, and MS is offering some nice incentives to manufacturers, this is going to struggle to get off the ground. That's where they should be targetting. I haven't heard much else on this front so I hope for their sakes, something's going on behind the scenes.

it'll just change the standard from one proprietary format to another. some company will still own the file type and use that to their advantage where possible, at the consumers' expense.
