View Full Version : Digweed & Sasha - Dissapointing
Did anyone else feel jipped by the fact that it took Sasha till about 8 in the morning to hit the dexs after the advertised 4:30 am back back set. Digweed played a very deep dark progressive set that seemed to go no-where (he played the same track 3 times!) It seemed to me that he was waiting for Sasha to rock up and was running out of records. Sasha looked visibly tired playing a dissapointing set - to say the least. Nothing like his global underground cds, which took the listener on an audio journey through progressive breaks up to uplifting progressive. Sure he played expander...but hey thats quite old and tired. All I can say is that for the no 1 and 3 DJs in the world we expected a lot better, and were expecting some new fresh "white label" tunes, that would blow us away....that never happened. One last point.....has anyone noticed a distinct bias towards the transmission and plastic promoters, John Ferris and Nervous..it seems that they must have some friends at in the mix. As even when criticising the Sydney Welcome 2001 gig, the presenter seemed to back track and applaud them in the end...??? kinda contradictory don't you think?!

Hey Roger,
I saw Sasha at Mobile home in Sydney and I didn't really get moved by any of his stuff. Admittedly a lot of that was because I just couldn't get comfortable at the party, but I was expecting something pretty special too and I didn't get it.
As for your comment about someone at inthemix being friends with nervous or john ferris, WRONG. (Not that there would be anything wrong with that ;-) I'm not sure what you wanted Mr Pants to say about the party that would have made you feel more comfortable. Bottom line is that Transmission and Plastic and Welcome 2001 Sydney get the same scrutiny that any party does.
Nervous and ferris are probably having a bit of a chuckle about your comment given some of the things we've said about other parties they've worked on.
We can tell you the same as we'd tell them, "we pride ourselves on our objectivity. we're nobody's tool. we say it like it is."

Lighten up mate! Sure I can understand why you'd be disappointed that Sasha didn't play until a lot later than expected and I also found Digweed a little too deep and same-ish, but sometimes you just have to move on - otherwise you'll always be left wondering why you bother.
As far as the review of Sydney's Welcome 2001 is concerned, all mr pants was trying to do was give an overall impression of how he felt about the whole gig. Saying that you had a great time evn though there were a couple of let-downs isn't contradictory - that's life!

Hey Roger and everyone there in sunny Melbourne. Sorry if it all reads in a strange way to you, it was NYE after all. I had an absolutely fantastic time on the night, and just so you know, I am not a real trance fan, have only ever been to Plastic once and generally go for breaks, progressive or tech-house stuff myself.
Not sure if you are aware but Sydney had ticket sales problems with Welcome too and as I have been around awhile, I understand that if $ don't come in, then changes are generally made (look at Welcome in Melbourne). The promoters succeeded in putting on a good party in the circumstances. Oh and they were only one of the promoters as well.
Shame about Sasha coming on at 8am though, I would not have been able to enjoy him at all by then. Maybe you Melbournites have stronger constitutions than me because I was totally knackered by then.
Have a good 2001 everyone down south (and that includes all my Tassie mates)
Thanks for the comments guys....I respect them all.
I was just looking for answers particularly from the Futureentertainment and Hardware crews on why Sasha came on soo late, I was completely knackered myself by then! Guess thats what happens these days, when different promoters from different states try to juggle DJs between their respective gigs (often at the cost of one party). Looks good on the flier but doesn't always necessarily deliver for the punters.
u r all 2 hard 2 please. if u can name all the tracks diggers and sasha played then yes they may not have played any white labels. i some how think u will have trouble with this task. the reason 4 the time difference between the pair, if u used your fuggen brains, was 2 give those who can appreciate the music and the artists a chance 2 see what each dj was about. have u heard that mix of heaven scent b4 that diggers played???hhmmm???? no u haven't!!!!! give the guys a bloody break they were flying around all night between gigs, and i along with many of my mates, believe their set was the best we have ever seen. only a few tracks were identifiable, even jimmy van m was looking at the records without a clue what they were. so pull your head out of your bloated arses, and appreciate the opportunity we were presented to see 2 such fine dudes hammer out never 2 be seen again tracks. digweed played deep cause he plays deep!!!! if u cant take the heat get the hell out of the kitchen! get your hands on the northern exposure cds, and there u will hear some wicked dark and dirty trance and progressive beats. plus, we r from sydney, and u punks have the opportunity 2 c diggers again on the 12th for 5 fucken hours. so go and get educated and appreciate the man as well as the music. so long whingers!!
In regards to Mixed's highly temperamental comments....
If the two headlines are advertised as playing "back to back" from 4:30 am that means that they are playing records against each other ie they DJ together...Yes I have heard the Northern Exposure cds...any clues why they are soo good, because the two are playing back to back??!!! Did they do that on the night???!!Nuf said.
The point being that it is the promoter's responsibility to live up to their promises on the flier. If they thought there would be issues on the night with Sasha getting to Melbourne (evidently Digweed didn't have any hassles getting to Melbourne on time) they should have given some "leeway" ie not advertise 4:30 am "back-to-back." There could be reason's for his lateness, yet Hardware nor Futureentertainment have revealed why.
Last point...DJs like them are true professionals...so you expect the best from them and for them to be near the proposed time, they weren't flying around all night, they had one gig in Sydney then one in Melbourne.
Perhaps a chill pill and a lie down, will help you get over your post NYE angst.
Cheers
Well I have to disagree that Sasha didn't play until 8:00. Digweed came on first and although they didn't play back to back, they seemed to play in one hour blocks. Sasha started playing at around 6:00, I remember this because I was in another room at the time when one of my friends came in to say he was playing. But please correct me if I am wrong
I must say that sure there weren't many tracks that I knew. Yet Digweed did play a lot from his Bedrock album, which was expected. If you have listened to the northern exposures you would hear the sound they played that night was very similar. Their styles have changed though, and that is why they are still so popular today, not simply fitting into the same preditcable mould. Have a listen to Global Underground, Expeditions, Northern Exposure and Communicate and see how much they differ. Sure if follows that basic progessive trance style but you can easily tell the difference.
Sure I did expect more, but that was just cause I wanted to hear the tunes that I listen to at home ie. Xpander, but I was still totally blown away.

what's the point in being a top DJ is you just play what's on your CDs? When I see Digger's (tonight at the Chevron) I dont want to be able to spot one tune...i want to hear new fresh tunes and white labels. That's what these guys are about...moving ahead of the scene, and being able to break new tunes.
I totally agree that it's nice to hear tracks you know. But on the other hand I dont want to go to a club/event and pay for what i can hear at home for free.

Yeah that is why it was so mind blowing, I don't want to hear what I can at home. I just meant that I was dying to hear a couple of songs, but that didn't ruin my night or anything. I couldn't imagine anything worse than paying money to hear what I could pay 30 to have on cd. If i wanted that I would go see Jason Midro play!
