In the market for some new headphones.

Has anyone tried these Shure noise cancelling ear bud models. I was looking at the Shure E4c's, in theory I shouldnt have to have them as loud as they are noise cancelling, good for my already suffering ears. But are they any good for dj applications and will I get the same performance i would get from say some HDJ1000's?

Been checking out some reviews but need some proper expert advise

Are you talking about like those ipod inner ear ones? If so i don't think they would be any good as HDJ 1000's, stick with the 1000's and mix with them on lower volume.

Turn your booth monitors down also.

Sennheiser HD280PRO for godlike isolation.

db just a note, the Sure E4's aren't propper noice cancelling headphones, they only isolate outside noise. Although out of all the in ear headphones they're supposed to be the beez kneez.

I wouldn't want to DJ with them though. They take a good 5 - 10 seconds to place properly in your ear to isolate the ouside noise. And that would just piss me off when you want to quickly monitor a track.

For true Noise cancellation headphones go Bose :thumb:

the ear bud ones will only give you full isolation if they are custom moulded to your ear canal otherwise they are about as good at isolation as normal ipod earbuds albiet with much better sound quality

I never even thought of that! It would b a pain the ass try to monitor with them. Apparently they recommend you loop them around behind your ear as well which just wouldnt b practical. Thanks mate!

Will b ordering some Pioneers today. Wish they didnt look so, um, Eric Morillo though

Oh god. Dont get pioneers.

I agree. I got Pioneers duty free awhile ago cause I could get noise-cancelling for about $80 that way. Thought would be good for the aeroplane.

If same as my model:
- fragile as anything, will snap if you put them on your head the wrong way
- flimsy little lead that will get crinked and squished in a second
- push really hard on your head
- noise cancelling does work, effectively removes ~300Hz noise like air-con, wind, etc but adds a tape-like 5kHz hiss in return.

Sorry deepbeetz

Re-eh-eally. Every review i've read on the net has rated the HDJ1000's in their top three. I may have to get down to the djwarehouse or something on the weekend and check them out for myself. I've always used Sony's so I dont have much to compare them to really.

I have used Shure's out before and didnt rate them at all.

Sennheiser = Too much stress on the bank account

Personally i would say for that price range go the Technics RP-DJ1200/1210's. Or even the sennheiser HD25sp's.

Everyone i have ever known with the HDJ1000's has been dissapointed. Namely due to its questionable pivot system for the cups whatever. If yours last longer than 6 months well done! Every one i have seen has broken.

Can put all my recommendations on the technics - have 2 pairs at home - one of them for over 6 friggin years now hahahahaha! Still goin strong. (although i must say my HD25's really are top notch ehhehehe).

Better yet - why not search this forum and read the plethora of threads on this very subject.

Jimbob, i agree with the technics cans and the senny cans' however if you think you are going to get pissed off with a double cable out of each ear cup. Don't get them lol.

Guys, look at the ear cups on all those you've recommended. THEYRE TINY.
Get something circum aural... isn't it obvious? HD25's won't block out shit compared to HD280s. AFAIK 280s have among the highest isolation of any music headphones out there.

Aah cool different model. Mine not DJ type, more consumer. Can't find on the net, maybe discontinued.

Just quickly diverting the topic to HD25s vs HD25sps..

Is the $100 price jump from the HD25sp to HD25s worth it?

In my opinion not really well i am not to fully sure i have used the pros once, only thing i could tell the diff was, a few dB higher. Thats all, oh and the single cable. Pretty much thats it

There are a few comforts on the pros that the Sps don't have like the cup being able to move or whatever.

Sennheiser HD 25 shut out sufficient external sound

differences between HD 25 and HD 25-SP are significant as follows (SP on right)

Nominal impedance 70 Ohm 85 Ohm
Sound pressure level (SPL) 120 dB 100 dB
THD, total harmonic distortion < 0,3 % < 0.4%
Frequency response (headphones) 16.....22000 Hz 30.....16000 Hz

Love my HD25s (non sp), well worth the money as they almost never break and if they do you just order the spare part you need so you never have to buy another new set again :thumb:

Another point is that the smaller cups are better to rest the headphones around your neck as bigger cups (Pioneers, Sony, Technics etc) are uncomfortable.

Actually the Technics cups are about the same size ;) Certainly smaller than the Sony & Pioneer.

I did it recently and my answer is a definite YES.

I'd HATE to DJ with canal earphones, purely because of the hassle of getting them in your ear tightly in a short amount of time.

Sure, but if you get some real good ear canal phones then the isolation is awesome.

Just on the pioneers HDJ1000's:

DO NOT BUY THEM

They are probably the worst option mentioned in this thread, for the following reason:

They WILL break.

Two of my best mates have gone through 4 pairs collectivly. They ALWAYS get stress cracks in the same place over about a 5 month period then break about 2 months after these cracks first appear.

Pioneer has done NOTHING to address this issue and they deserve to be boycotted accordingly.

This isn't something i've read on the internet but something i've witnessed time and time again.

Yeah I'd have to say the pioneers are not the best option. Got mine cheap but and recently snapped above the cup as mentioned. A bit rough on the head and awkward. I treated them a bit like shit though. I also had the technics that were the great for DJing and now have a set of the lovely HD25's. Cant go wrong with those two.

I've had my Pioneers two years. The bit everyone said breaks, hasn't broken on mine.

One headphone doesn't work anymore though. So something else went wrong in the end.

My HD-25's were delivered today. 4 days from chemical-records and $250! JB want $470 for a pair, and i've seen many an expensive online store selling these. I've only been able to test them out through an ipod so far but hell they are light! Comfortable! And sound f*cking awesome!

Off topic but definately headphone related... I made the trip to JB today to order 2 x cdj800's and a djm400. I must say i i think i did quite well with them doing the cdjs for $999 each and the mixer for $699. I would not have known about chemical-records or that JB have THE best prices on pioneer gear if it wasn't for these forums. Cheers guys and gals and keep up the great work.

Not bad at all, I got a quote for the exact same setup from Bondi Junction JB ($3100).

Didn't get my haggle on, but I sure as fuck will now.

As far as monitoring while using the Shure in-ear earphones, what you need is one of these attached: http://www.shure.com/PersonalAudio/Products/Accessories/CasesAdapters/us_pa_PTH_push_to_hear

I'm not entirely sure how good the mic would be at picking up the booth monitors (although it IS a Shure product!), but it's enough to interest me.

I got a pair of HD25sp's and they are sweet. At first I was optimistic to the cup size but when you adjust them to sit at the perfect height you can't hear shit outside of them! So clean and crisp aswell, some say they are a little bass heavy which I tend to agree with (just) but that's how I like it :P

Good Cans:

Technics RP-DH1200 (Havent failed me or any of my friends yet, shit i remember when these cans were $500)

Sennheiser HD-25 Pros (beautiful light weight and very comfortable but i dont personally own a pair a friend does and i use them so much i may as well own a pair)

Sennheiserr EH-150 (Im not sure if these are the old 150's but they are cheap and sweet)

Numark PHX (surprisingly good for its price, i think i picked up these for about $120 or so and they are the best cans i have owned for such a low price plus thye came with spare cables (long, short, coiled) 3 in total and also spare ear pads... Woooo highly reccomend)

Technics RP-DJ1200 & 1210s (I have only owned the 1210s but they are a big tick for comfort but do get a little hot around the ears...though these did break kinda quickly....hmmm perhaps not as good)

Shit Cans:

Stanton DJ Pro 3000 Headphones (cool little blue LED light on them when sound was going through them though :) )

Pioneer HDJ-1000 Pro ( Just shit quality and break way too easy i have seen it several times before but other than that thay are ok and are much better than the Omni replacement my friend had when his broke)

This is what i think:P

cheers all,

Jes

i don't really understand lots of this stuff as i'm sure as hell no DJ.. but i thought it'd be interesting to note that if one was to watch the Scratch DVD, the Executioners all wear clip on headphones rather than proper one, eg the HD25s or some such..
