View Full Version : Fashionable Camera Bags
I need a bag to carry around especially to concert gigs. However i find my Lowpro computrekker and the slingshots are either too big and too small. I needed a medium range and prefably quite fashionable and wanting to stay away from the generic lowpro and crumplers lables.
i needed something to fit for the following
2 bodies (D2x and D70)
17-35mm
70-200mm
50mm
1x speedlight
and heaps of storage compartment for batteries and flash cards
Any recommendations will be greatly appreciated.
Cheers
Ayong

yeah, always tricky. most camera bags look like camera bags, except the crumplers, which look like crumpler camera bags (I love my crumpie)
you could do the 'bucket' option from crumpler, which is an insert for a regular sling bag so ou could then get whatever sling you wanted. I think you can buy inserts from lowepro too.
if your crumpler objection is just about the styles they happen to have not suiting you then you can get them to custom make something for you.
otherwise I dunno, maybe get some inserts and get someone to sew them into a cooler bag and make your own :)

No that is what im talking about.. but, is there such thing as custom make camera bag places anywhere in aus?

Crumpler down here will custom make one, they have a specific custom store, but I think if you go into the actual crumpler stores they can take the orders and stuff. I assume that the closer you are to a standard bag the less it costs, and they'll have limitations on logo placement etc, but they can probably construct something specific. maybe even call the crumpler custom store in fitzroy (number should be on the crumpler site) and talk to them.
they'll probably let you sketch out what you want and fax it to them, they should be able to make up custom divider designs etc.

Grab one of the Lowepro stealth shoulder reporter bags, im using a mini trekker AW works fine with a 5D, Grip,16-35, 135, 50, 24-70 & 70-200 plus hoods, 580ex, cards, filters the lot.

thanks scoots.. looks like another melb field trip for me
ayong, you reckon the slingshot bags are too small? If you look at the new 300AW you might like that for your kit, i find its nicely low profile and not too bulky and easy to use/carry.
I just ordered the new Slingshot 300 AW.. i was waiting for a decent sized slingshot to come out, and this one will fit my camera, 4 lenses and flash unit just fine.
Plus it can store the cam with a 70-200 attached, so thats handy.

Heard ALOT of people complaining about the 300AW, shoulder design is bad for large SLR/70-200 as all the weight is on one side... Think you may find a backpack style is better..
Great concept, but poor in reality.
i need something like a box bag.
I'm gonna go to Clark Rubber...purchase a block of foam and cut it out in a shape so i can slot my camera in. Then fit it in my small backpack.
I just hate buying camera bags because there's an exponential risk of getting it stolen.
great idea. once you are done, show me what it looks like :P
Actually, i think i would just buy a camera backpack. I'll probably be travelling around Europe with my widescreen laptop + DSLR.

How much are specialist backpacks? I am getting horrid back problems from my over the shoulder bag. Probably because I have my k10d with a 15-50 on it and a 70-300mm zoom in the same bag.
I've just bought this bag.

Just to set matters straight.... We do have a custom bag shop in Melbourne, where you can custom design your own design onto the front flap of a number of messenger style bags, and the considerable embarrassment laptop bag.
Unfortunatly there is no option yet to custom design any of the photography bags.
good news for sydney siders though, a Crumpler custom shop will be in town by the end of the year.
If you are looking for something good looking to take out with you, I'd go for a million dollar home. Best to bring your gear into one of the stores where the staff can help you decide which would be the best for you.

yeah, across the road and about 100m toward the city from the bank hotel.
got myself a day pack and a 3million dollar home i think (whatever the 3rd post is for.... enough to fit an SLR with lens and an external flash or 2nd lens.

Thats a really cool bag! So many people what a good quality camera bag that doesn't LOOK like a typical camera bag!
Anthony, I had another idea.... Have you seen how the Bucket inserts work? This could be cool for when you are out and about. The bucket inserts fit into the regular messenger style bags.....
This is the bucket: http://www.crumpler.com.au/Cart/Resources/CartResources/253_res/th_b253_o10417.jpg
http://www.crumpler.com.au/Cart/Resources/CartResources/253_res/b253_o10417_ai403_thumb.jpg
http://www.crumpler.com.au/Cart/Resources/CartResources/253_res/b253_o10417_ai405_thumb.jpg
and this particular size fits in these bags:
http://www.crumpler.com.au/Cart/Resources/CartResources/300_res/b300_o10660.jpg
http://www.crumpler.com.au/Cart/Resources/CartResources/181_res/b181_o10518.jpg
it also fits in the western lawn but not as well as the others.
After using my Crumpler backpack for a few weeks now, i can say WOW!
The bag is really well designed. If you check the bag, it is in a S shape so all the big weights are close to your back....to improve comfort.

ME thinks up to this moment..
DOMKE Rules.
Next is the Cumpler Backpack *esp. for travelling & in plane*
The only thing with Domke is that is a shoulder bag &
if you carry too heavy things on either of your shoulder, soon
your shoulder will be f*ck & it will always feel stiff & achy.
Although Domke have a Backpack solution, as follows:
http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z28/bonniebonitabonnie/DMFA100.jpg
I am torn in between the Domke / Cumpler Backpack
One Looks Unlike a camera bag esp. the sand color.
Another gives good support but i think it gonna be a little hassle when you try to take
your camera out all the time. esp when you traveling.
You may buy it Online? But most probably its located @ the states.

If you are ever thinking of buying Samsonite or Crumpler bags, i beg of you to not buy it in Australia. There are so much better selections in Netherlands online store that it makes the Melbourne based company a joke. No Aussie pride at all.

Best thing to do is check it out yourself. Take your camera gear to the store and test each bag.

Actually i got it directly from the camera house in brisbane city on george street, and yeah its great but i see now after seeing some crumpler bags that it is almost identical, apart from the inner camera part not velcroed in like in crumpler bags, and yes if i had the money i would have gone the crumpler route but i think i got this bag for like $70 which was MUCH less than the equivilent crumpler, and apparently the bagman has a 1-year warranty too!

Crumpler and low-pro = lifetime warranty (which means as long as the original owner owns the bag, they'll replace or repair the bag).
I'm keen to hear how the bagman stuff is though. I'm always happy to give wraps to good design and practicality and value for money where wraps is due.....

Bit of a bump on the thread, I was thinking of buying a new camera backpack mainly to fit my 13.3" Macbook and my 400D + lenses/flash/battery grip etc. I've had a look at the lowepro ones but has anyone had any experience with the camera + laptop bags? they all seem pretty big and i was looking for a relatively small one for my macbook to have a pretty snug fit.
