View Full Version : Constructing a Portfolio
Hi Folks
I have finally decided to get organised and get my portfolio together (may have something to do with the fact that I am going for a job with a photographic element).
So I basically have a series of questions:
- how many photos?
- what size?
- style of presentation?
Any assistance and advice will be sincerely appreciated
thanks
nettsu
-10-20 photos
-no smaller than a4, no larger than a3
- make sure it's clean, simple and looks professional
a good quality photography shop (like platinum imaging in paddington, syd) will generally be able to help you.
whats the job!?
its for melbourne bmw
basically doing glamour shots of the cars
:-D
(its a quasi-marketing role - take photos of cars, do a bit of post-processing, upload to bmw website, also a bit of event/function photography I think)
I have the feeling that it could either be entertaining or pay a hell of a lot less than what I get now

I'd suggest a variety of different shots that shows you're familiar with the type of work they'd expect you to do. In this case (a) products (or food as a substitute) and (b) event work. I don't think that studio portrait stuff is that relevant here (just guessing) unless it's one of those naked chick lying on the shiny phallic car things!
Hey Nettsu some places to find a nice folio -
Foto Riesel (kent street Sydney)are one of a few who have a nice range of pre made folio books.
A lot of photographers get their books custom made by either book-binders or specialist folio places o/s.

11" x 14" or thereabouts is the common size for a portfolio
I'm thinking more Mercedes Benz shots are needed. That will sway the BMW folks for sure.
edit: Working for BMW would be cool :D

yeah I will include a shot of mabel in my portfolio - a friend and I were discussing the idiocy of me driving to work and parking my mercedes out the front... that would be a look... my old powderblue merc out the front of a the biggest BMW dealer in melbourne  (ahh I thought it was funny)
thanks guys :)
going to look at a few options tomorrow and finally start selecting the shots for printing

good luck dude! let us know how you go!
well
it was probably the most fun i've had in an interview for a long time
its not a strongly a photography gig :(
and the money thats being offered (regardless of how much I hate this job) makes it really stupid for me to move...
would end up being about a $16-$17k paycut
c'est la vie
its all a learning experience
and I ended up submitting an electronic portfolio
I was a little disorganised with the printing & stuff so I sent it across to our .mac address

I haven't heard back from them
so it doesn't really matter
I am not prepared to take that much of a paycut
