View Full Version : Disillusioned Sydney Person / Melb Deep House?

Whatever the reason for the abundance of trashin syd, I have decided to make a venture down to Melb this year. Two Times in fact, one during the summer and also once during early March.
I was just wondering what the situation with deep house is in Melb, especially in regards to clubs that play it extensively. And are there any Deep House dance parties during march. After seeing Derrick Carter in sep/oct I talked to a few people that said it actually exists in Melb as opposed to syd (intentional lowercase s).
I guess my main wish is to know about the extremely high quality dance parties that Melbourne gets, but Deep.

Cheers, south of the border people!

Yeah there is a small scene; a movement.

Honky Tonks is the club but it is very underground.

We have had Gemini, Abacus and Maurice Fulton play there and the residents are off the hook. Go on a Sunday night.

There are others too. Check out the street press for mo' info.

There are some great DJs playing this music at the moment, too, in Melbourne.

It's too early to say what deep house parties there will be in March as promoters keep things under wraps but I know of nothing at the moment.

It's a shame as we want more; there is a demand.

Maurice now resides in Melbourne and plays out occasionally.

Honky Tonks is great, just bring kg's of coke...

Revolver on Friday nights plays host to Curve. Anthony Steep and Angela Maison DJ there and is a very tasty treat! Simon Caldwell and Ken Cloud will actually be playing there very soon. Saturday nights there also has good deep house in the lounge area. Q-Bar is pretty good at times as well, withe a very deep Peace Division type sound thing happening, but it's more on the funky tip.

The best thing to do is check out street press as soon as you hit the place.

Hey, forget the coke, the cocktails are Honkytonks are off da hook and all you need!

Yes Sydney's Simon Caldwell and Ken Cloud guest DJ at Revolver's deep house night, Curve, on 19 January.

On 25 Jan Maurice Fulton and Denise Rich will play their first-ever Groovemuff party (at St Kilda's Bigmouth), joined by J'nett.

Lots of delicious stuff!

Peace

Hey this is the question I have been meaning to ask myself for ages.

I have a demo CD with a 74min mix I have done of the smoothest deepest house alive. Anyway, I was kinda looking for some gigs and have not found that many places to hand it out (havent been in Melb that long!).

Anyone got any ideas about places that would be willing to listen to a demo CD done by someone they havent actually heard of (me!) ?? I find these days that unless you know someone, or blag a lot, it's nigh on impossible to get any gigs (or even a response!)...regardless of how good your mixing is.

Thanks!!

I have heard that at stateside they don't always play deep house. Is it specifically a pure 100 percent deep house night.
I used to go to the old underground back when they dealt in sordid business but now Bob "No Drugs" carr and his band of john Q laws closed it down for every mr and mrs citizen like myself. I must stop by some night. I always forget the answer to this q, but is it on fri or saturdays. It's saturdays isn't ?
And thats Deportif with a capital D please, lets keep civilized peoples

ok D (hey that's what you're good friends call you, yeah... and we're all good friends here aren't we).

You're right... they're not always all deep house or deep house all night long... they do venture into the funkier side of Chicago and new york house... but the baselines usually remain deep.

have you seen mark farina? i assume so given your taste for deep house (but then you are a young one too aren't you)... IMO he is the greatest truely deep house dj. I'm not convinced carter is purely deep house.

anyway... look for mr farina to be at stateside next time he is in town

I have heard that Farina is great. As I stated in a separate Sydney thread, Carter is definately not a deep house dj specifically.
BUT HE DOES IT WELL!!!!
If stateside ventures into the chicago house sound, fan foogootastic!!!! shall be there with bells on. maybe we can meet up one night or something.
I strongly urge you to get an album called"the many shades of cajual, future sound of chicago" it was made in 94 i believe by ministry of sound of all groups. This made me very sceptical but when I heard Derrick mix it up with three decks i was blown away at the quality of the Cajual artists
an excellent buy

I have 2 concur with some of the others Deportif (by the way - u have great taste) Curve with Angela Maison (don't forget the 'i' - makes it sortta continental) & Ant. J Steep @ Revolver in Chapel is your deep house night (so deep it is underwater ; so deep its triple thick) other nites that r specifically DEEP house as opposed to simply House nites r a little more difficult. But if u c in Street Press etc that J'nett is playing - she'll be playing jazzy house that moves through 2 DEEP, Agent 99 is anutha DJ that plays house - @ Velvet Bar in the City on Fridays (I think its Fridays) she plays house thats sortta sexy - but does move through deep house. Georg K & Anthony Larr play 'Vinyl' @ Carousal, and also jenFM plays @ Sub in Commercial Rd on Saturdays - which I haven't been 2 - BUT must - I've heard this is a good house nite - if u go there (Sub on Saturday) post a little review.
But Curve should be your #1 port of call. (Revolver's just around the cnr from Sub) .

last year before stateside was closed down there were a series of weeks where about 10 internationals came through stateside in about 10 weeks. including one night when 5 internationals played! (carter being one of them).

the first time farina played stateside was a milestone, there wont be anyone forgetting that night for a loooong time.

stateside is slowly building up again after getting its legs chopped off after the shut down last year. lets hope it makes it!

(in the meantime look out for space parties, anything with nick law on the bill, or mad racket parties...)

i was at space five at the metro and my god it was deep and slow and crunchy and phat phunky and sexy
i still can't get over it
so the stateside crowd is picking up?

I agree with you all. Farina is THE Deep house Master. Deportif, your'e spot on, the last Space party with Mark Farina was possibly the best night of my entire life. Consistant, deep, soulful house at it's absolute best... i still get shivers from thinking about it... Also, Farina @ underground a few years ago was unbelievable - The feeling of being in some deep underground San Francisco club with deep tunes & grooves relentlessly passing through the crowd...

Sydney-wise, Stateside is the place to be for deep US house... The crowd isn't as big as it was before the shutdown, but it seems to be growing. The venue has been done up real nice, and there've been a couple of awesome nights there.... let's see how it goes :)

See you all at the next Space Party!!! When is it anyway!?

EoN

PS. Anyone out there agree that "Inhibitions (Clear Horizons Remix)" by Belizbeha, from Farina's "United DJs of America" mix is one of the greatest tracks of all time?
