View Full Version : Whats it like being a free music mag photographer?
Like the brag, or 3DWorld? I'm thinking about signing up, convince me!
I've heard its about $15 per venue, and alot of fun with free entry, and superstar clubber status. Has anyone got any advice/ stories?
Also, to what extent do you think the job enhanced your photag skillz?

There are plenty of other ways to obtain superstar clubber status. No one will ever forget that girl who defecated on the steps to the DJ booth at Sublime all those years ago.
But answering your other questions:
-I don't believe 3DWorld pay you. May be they do pay some of the more professional photographers working for them, but generally no.
-I first joined up to be an ITM contributor as an excuse to use my camera frequently- the first event I covered was the first time I ever used my camera. So the experience has helped me improve my photography.
Also consider becoming an ITM contributor. ITM tends to offer more events to cover each week.

what's a superstar clubber? is that like a celeb status?

free coke and hookers I assume...
The_Duke one of my first times I took my camera out seriously was for itm - and that was my crappy old kodak cxsomethingorrather... although I haven't done anything for ITM in ages - but I haven't had the desire to go out in ages.
No don't do it!!
They promise the whole world to you i.e chicks etc.. but i haven't seen that happening to me yet :|
or i must have been going to the wrong clubs?
^^Suppose I wasn't doing it for the chicks... Is it something you are proud to put on your resume? I think for myself, being a beginner, the experience would be invaluable. Your Flickr page is tops btw!

I think I heard about that. When they dragged her out she was screaming about how they couldn't kick her out because she was "the manager at Anderson's Ice Cream".

perhaps she was simply advertising their soft serve in a hilarious and eye catching way?

It is invaluable experience
and think about the amount of traffic that inthemix gets
thats potentially a very large audience for your photos
(see it all depends on how you put the spin on it...)

Yeah, I've got it on my resume.
Personally I don't like this stigma of social photographers doing it for the chicks. I remember seeing an ad in Brag magazine-
Like going out? . . . Like taking photos of hot chicks?
Then become a Brag photographer!
If you want pictures of chicks, there's a whole world wide web of porn out there.

I contribute to ITM and comp because I do it for a living as well. I get paid to go to some gigs some I contribute to, for, like ITM. Its good fun, get your self some connections/networking and from their you score future clients and "friends" lol but I say its good fun, work yur magic to getting free drinks and talking to many people! :P
Thanks for all the replies, everyone is so disgustingly nice here at ITM! I've decided that only good can come of the plunge into the world of contribution, whether it is paid or not.
I'm in the market for a speedlite atm. A Canon 420/430ex should do me, and when that's acquired, free ticket to hernan cattaneo here I come! Cheers again, guys.

my friend does photos for the brag.
you get $20 per venue, and you have to submit 8 photos per venue.
pretty easy, and not bad if you can do a heap of venues that are close to one another, or synchronise your going our with your work.

With 3Dworld and In The Mix you get free entry, and in almost all cases you'll get a +1 free entry to bring a friend along.

$20 and for only 8 photos- that's a damn good deal.

How does one get themselves into photos in mags and or this site???
Do you have to have an interesting outfit?
Do you have to be a gorgeous blonde skinny gal in a skimpy outfit???
I have seen many bigger people at dance parties no photos of them.
I have seen older people attend dance parties no photos of them either.
Whats the go??? Or are you just trying to sell dance parties to good looking young people. I've seen over 40yrs at dance parites.

Red delicious....the reason why you don't see those kinds of photos is because the promoters want to promote the event, they do this by hiring club photographers to take photos of the cough "good looking" crowd.
So when people check out the club pics and see a good looking people, it draws more people to the event.
Also with inthemix the photographer can put up any photos he or she took at the event, its there call which photos go up, After the club pics are uploaded correctly, it goes to angus and the rest of the funky bunch to get the gallery approved but you get my drift...

99% of posed pictures i take are of people who have requested a photo. believe it or not these people are often
a) good looking
b) wearing nice clothes
c) female
d) all of the above
is it any surprise to you that the galleries are filled with attractive girls who like showing off their outfits etc?
ive often asked people who dont fit any of the above if they would like a photo and often they decline said request.
also, theres plenty of photos of the older clubber generation. just search 'ezekial' on itm.

to be in eri11x photos you have to be
oh wait.. theres been brundettes as well :p
i like taking shots of ppl that are having a good time enjoying themselves regardless of what theyre wearing or look like.
sure it might get more hits in the galleries if its full of pretty ppl but i doubt itll make more ppl go to the event. unless of course you are in fact one of THOSE types then.. well,... sucks to be you
plus since we (itm) are there to cover an event, so there are always giong to be warm up djs/supporting acts and the ppl that dont ask you for a photo, or wear the right clothes or have their boobs out or be in the well lit part of the club, i dont see why they should miss out jsut cos they dont fit the current "look"

hello all, just wondering if I wanted to become a photo contributor am I expected to photoshop all the photos before uploading them?
and with the images, are they sent to the ITM office and uploaded there or are they uploaded by myself?
The Duke
22-Jul-07, 09:44am
There's no requirement to edit photos. It's really your choice whether you'd want to touch up/edit your photos beforehand.
Photos are uploaded through the website- put all your photos into a zip file and upload that file to ITM.

is there any obligation to submit a certain number of photos? the reason i ask is because when you flick thru previous albums some have 4 pages whilst others only have the single page
thanks

The max limit is four pages, but that doesn't apply for large events/festivals
There's no minimin. Personally I try to aim for atleast two pages. But sometimes you just can't get that many shots- say when there's only a handful of people in the club, or *ahem* you've gotten so damn drunk you can't hold the camera straight anymore.
I think the only time your content and quality will matter is if you want to cover the major events (eg Field Day). When you apply for an event, it's usually first come first served, but for the major events, if two photographers apply, preference will likely be given to the one who will do the best job.
Don't get too caught up worrying about obligations and requirements etc. Have fun. You're a contributor, the time and effort you put in is entirely up to you.

one more question (sorry guys), I know all venues have strict dress codes, do photographers have to adhere to there dress codes? i prefer to wear casual wear
and are we given anything to say we're from ITM

^^every club is different, some are a little more leiniant some give you a media pass and alot WONT have you on the door and you WILL be bounced. tho these are Qs you really should be taking up with your state editor. theyre the ones organising it for you and have direct contact with the clubs

prolly not the best advice to give to a n00b. itm is plagued with free loaders just looking at getting in for free and not diong their "job". youve offered to do a task at least have some pride with doing something you put your name to

totally agree, i dont have any intention of putting my hand up to take photos to get into a venue, and most of the music genres covered weekly arent my cup of tea. I just want to get out there and take photos because i want to learn more about photography and working a 9-5job doesnt give me much opportunity to do so
anyways i cant put my hand up for this week due to some prior commitments but looking to get out there next week
p.s. maybe someone could let me "tag along" with them =)

yes, you have to adhere to venue dress codes.
no, nothing is given from itm. your state editor will put your name on the guestlist.

Yeah, I agree- I realise now it wasn't the best way of putting it. It just seemed before that shuttervision was getting quite worried with all the questions so I was trying say in a roundabout way to relax a little.

What style of music/what clubs are you interested in (if any)? When I'm at a club where there's a photographer running around, I usually try to watch them and see how they go about doing things.

im into rnb music (for dancing) but i do listen and appreciate all genres of music (just that i dont dance to the music)
does that make sense lol?
but i dont think that my preference in which music i like to dance too would play a big role if i was only there to photography ppl having fun
