never used it but i own serato. from all accounts + personal experience, go with serato - the free updates on the software makes it worthwhile alone... oh, and the fact that it is a stable program :D

How is it for live remixing though? I forgot to ask how the two compare on that front. Ie adding live drums being able to do break downs adding effects etc.
traktor has been around for a while, it *should* be stable
A nice review here:
http://www.nem0nic.com/
It really looks the biz I'm hoping it will integrate well into Traktor 3.3, when it comes out... supposedly you can control all 4 decks using only 2 control vinyl.
I own Serato but i'm unbiased on the product, if i was buying again i'd definitely give this a go against serato, but that being said it's really an untested product for the masses
Serato works well, but the SL1 is obviously old hardware now

My mate recently sold his FinalScratch2 setup and bought Traktor Scratch with the Audio8 interface for his Apple MacBook Pro. We had a mixing session with it for a bunch of hours last weekend.
It was rock solid stable, no strange (have to reboot to fix) issues (unlike his old FS2), and the 320k mp3s we were mixing sounded fantastic, nice and crisp/clean (unlike his old FS2 which always made the mp3s sound a little dull/muddy).
I'm impressed with the Audio8 interface build/functions, and the quality loom style cables it comes with too.
I had decided on getting Serato Scratch some time ago, but since using this, now I'm not so sure...
The NI audio interfaces are really nice bits of kit. Great build quality, great sounding and good value for money.
I would say this product and ancillaries will make a few companies sit up and evaluate exactly what they are offering customers for their hard earned.
Or maybe not...

I am thinking about getting either Serato or Traktor Scratch as I am going to be heading overseas
early in the new year and dont really fancy taking alot of vinyl with me.
I just cant figure out which. It seems that Traktor is (assuming no real problems emerge)
going to take the mantle as the best platform out there?

Wow have been checking out the vids and Traktor looks hawt..
Traktor is an awesome interface.
The program has been around for at least as many years as serato. very stable and easy to use.
The advantage with Traktor is that you are not buying a piece of outdated hardware. You can use any multi in/out audio interface to get the job done. NI's own interfaces are awesome and great value for money. Plus as they support ASIO drivers that means you can use these interfaces to produce with later down the track. Very worth it IMO.

What sort of prices is it for the full set up including audio interface?
Also where to demo in Sydney?

I think they have both Serato and Traktor Scratch in at Spank Records, you can play with them there...
Do they have the Interfaces as well??
As you will need one if you go the NI route. At the moment this seems to be winning for me also as the interface is not proprietary. huge plus!!!
By the looks of it they have the NI Kontrol 1 as well. Which is the interface they primarly designed for use with Traktor i believe.
Not a bad buy at $440 :thumb:

doesnt traktor come with Audio 8 interface??
If you buy Traktor Scratch then that is the case yes.
Hmmm... I've just recently been looking into this also. At first glimpse I much prefer Traktors interface. I will have to pop into Spank also to give them a go.
as far as thinking forward, this is the way forward IMO.
It opens up so many creative possibilities that just aren't possible with traditional setups.
As do most digital solutions.
However the importance of having a stable setup is paramount and can often mean that you will have a laptop that is essentially treated as an instrument. I.e. As stripped back an OS as possible and no crap on there that can slow it up. Like not connecting it to the internet and all that other crap.
As fast a drive speed as possible is also important so the program can access the data required when it needs it. Plus some decent amount of ram, I tend to err on the side of caution and would prefer over and above the recommended settings for the program.
There are heaps of tricks and tips for making your setup stable, and trust me the last thing you will want it to have you laptop die in the ass mid set.
For me personally though, Traktor is a great stable program, but i can get all its functionality and more out of ableton and a controller setup.
For those who are looking towards digitising their setups whilst retaining some hands on tactility(mixing in the traditional manner), then this is your bag guys.

Going to have a look at it today..

I went and had a play with this at Spank records and it was great.
Its a little clunky when moving the needle in big steps to find a portion of a song however
you can set up and save cue points so thats prob not a big problem.
The loop feature is great and with a little practice it could be perfect. I believe that you can nudge the loop start and end in case you dont get it right on the beat.
I would like to see it with a little faderfox or like midi controller (it would make using the effects so much easier).
I am going to have to have another look at it when I dont have a few people waiting for me
but at this point I think I will acquire one of these little babies and a new mac lappy some
time just after June?? (new pay year and hopefully a pay rise?)
Only down fall is it means I am going to spend countless hours burning all of my vinyl to the
pc?? Oh well.
afaik, traktor scratch can't be used w/o the audio 8 interface?
is this correct?

You'd be very wrong. Haven't read much about it huh?
A mere trip to their website would have confirmed this.

Def gonna do a bit more research on this and possibly buy it once i get my laptop next month.
If I buy it from the US or the UK can I still use it in Aus?? I couldnt see that there were any power leads or anything that would cause conversion hassles? it all goes thru your laptop/mixer doesnt it?

lol
i've used fs2 with traktor for 10 hours++ many times and used it for hundreds of hours in total and it has never crashed once and i have never needed to reboot my machine once 'to fix' etc. also the fs2 soundcard is awesome and i cannot understand the 'dull' or 'muddy' bit...
i think it's one thing to sing a product's praises but i think if this is done by means of a comparison it should be made on a level playing field!
also your mate's computer must be awesome+++
i loveeeeeeeee the traktor software and would be interested to see how this stacks up for scratching compared with SSL. i know FS2 leaves a little bit to be desired in this area :(

Has any one had decent experience with having to set up/remove traktor scratch or equivalent in
clubs prior to playing?
I have seen bass kleph do it and it looks pretty straight forward?
Any experience would be great

Hey guys, new to the forum. I 've read all the discussions above,
if you want some hands on with these check out DJ Warehouse if you're in Sydney. They have Serato, Tracktor Scratch and Torq all set up on different macs and decks so you can get a really good comparison of them all in one hit. I was in there recently and was very impressed with their set up.
Personally I prefer Serato ( been using it for about 2 years), but the extra features that the new systems offer like effects, auto looping and midi controll definitely got me in upgrade mode.
However I reckon serato will step up and provide some of these features via software upgrades, (sooner or later) so I'm not gonna make a switch any time soon.
not too sure about effects built into these systems, but if it doesn't affect stability then yeah, i'm all for it....
Serato is definately getting full midi support and auto beat looping....
Have u used the easter egg yet romyronson?
Grab this or maybe last months copy of Computer Music came with a demo of Traktor .. I haven't tried it myself yet but would imagine the best way to geta feel for it is to have a play with it ..

What's the easter egg?
Yothere's a combo of buttons you can press and then you get auto beat looping pressing cntrl and 1, 2, 3, 4 buttons etc. It's basically what they'll be releasing in 1.8, but not 100 % reliable just yet. Haven't dopne it myself but it supposed to work search the serato forums

Easter Egg in Serato 1.7
For those of you who are using 1.7 already, there's a hidden feature. Auto looping is in. You can set a loop of 1, 2, 4, 8 or 16 beats. Here's how:
When you open up serato, before loading a song onto the deck, click the bpm tap button 100 times. As you go you'll start to get little messages at the bottom of the screen. Finally it'll tell you congratulations.
Now, hold down Alt and use the number keys to set desired length loops. 1-5 for the left deck, 6-0 for the right deck. Experiment...it's pretty dope. If you wanna make that effect where you get into loops smaller than 1 beat, just once you get down to 1 beat, hit the "out" button so that it allows you to reset the out point, and use the left arrow key to make your loop smaller. You can then bring your loop down to a stutter, then hit the loop button to turn the loop off and let the song play again. This can create some really cool effects.
Also, you can use alt+t and alt+g to start a loop that starts at 2 beats, then keep cutting itself in half automatically.
For any of this to work your tracks must be BPM-ed.....you can do it manually....even half tap song BPMs then write it into the BPM colum....MUST BE ACCURATE!!!! or it will be out of beat!!
spent tonight looking over this and really want this unit ^_^
ITM group buy here we come hopefully :-D
^^^^ Serato or Scratch?? I am definitely looking at Serato but will need to check out scratch before I hand over my hard earned. You can grab Serato new from the states about 650 - 700 landed.
scratch.
for me there's many reasons to look over rane and buy TS.

let's say you want to play a normal record, does it just go through the audio8? don't really like the idea of skipping the xones preamps.
am i right in saying that if i buy a korg zero 4 i don't need to buy the interface?
http://www.native-instruments.com/index.php?id=tscratchcertified_us
correct bracko, cool idea eh?
yeah, but the issue remains that if you don't buy the interface the you have to lug your mixer out if you wanted to play a set out?
