Björk's just released a new album

taken from boomkat -

*Includes Bonus Disc featuring 5.1 Surround Sound Mixes - in limited edition Special Packaging* A Björk album is always a major event in the musical calendar, particularly for any followers of experimental music – no other artist can be credited with introducing such an array of avant-garde elements and production techniques so directly into the mainstream. The same goes for personnel: in hand-picking collaborators from the underground’s finest talents Björk has been responsible for drawing the pop chart-following public’s attention to the work of Matmos, Zeena Parkins, LFO’s Mark Bell and Opiate’s Thomas Knak. That’s quite some achievement in itself. Only last week she went and put free drumming icon Chris Corsano on Saturday Night Live. I mean, that’s just crazy. Also assisting with Volta’s percussive backbone are Lightning Bolt’s Brian Chippendale and Konono No. 1 (surely Congo’s answer to scrap metal merchants Einsturzende Neubauten).

What of the album though? Well, after Medùlla’s uncompromising interrogation of the timbral identity of the human body, Björk has returned to the kind of outward-looking fieriness of Homogenic. That said, the rickety Afro-shuffle of single ‘Earth Intruders’ recalls the organic rhythms of ‘Human Behaviour’, only to segue into the similarly excellent ‘Wanderlust’ via an incredibly naturalistic, melodic manipulation of foghorn sounds from docking ships. It sounds amazing – like something you’d find on a Touch compilation, but here it is on a Top 40-bound release. ‘Wanderlust’ introduces one of the album’s key elements, the pervasive use of brass, as best put to use on the heart-melting ‘Pneumonia’, which frames Björk’s voice in the pitter-pat of rainfall recordings and a haunting, impeccably phrased horn arrangement. ‘I See Who You Are’ is almost as good, featuring Min Xiao-Fen’s pipa (a Chinese stringed instrument) accompanied by a sequence of subtle electronic bass tones. Of course, Björk ‘s voice is the star here, and by the song’s conclusion she’s multitracked herself into quiet choral bliss.

It’s astonishingly beautiful. ‘Innocence’ is as playful as Björk’s sounded for a while, its stop-start beat assisted by some circuit-frazzled synth work, and penultimate track ‘Declare Independence’ takes this idea even further, cranking the distortion to Alec Empire levels of Digital Hardcore punk electronics. The final track, ‘My Juvenile’ is graced with both Tounami Diabatè’s virtuoso kora and Antony Hegarty’s angelic vocal stylings (this is the second of two tracks to feature Antony) but as with the rest of Volta, this is all very much Björk’s show, regardless of how impressive her list of collaborators may be. Stunning, absolutely essential listening from a truly great artist of our time.

she just keeps pushing the boundries, only heard the three tracks here

Listening to it for the first time right now.

I suspect it will take me a few listens to really warm up to it though.

Does the new album mean an international tour may be on the cards? Björk is #2 on my Artists To See Before I Die list.

the tracks all sound so different and
she is collaborating with some serious talent

This new one is definitely a grower....sinks in a bit more after 10 or so listens. I really like it. Wasn't so sure at first.

Be interesting to see what remixes come from this album...

Vespertine is still my fav album though.

And yes she is incredible live, saw her in 93 in Brisbane at festival hall and was blown away. (even more by the fact she was supported by Plaid!! and I had no idea till after the gig- although I recognised their sound I didn't know for sure it was them till after)

^ That wasn't the concert where she ran out into the audience and had a wee on the dance floor was it?! Bless her.

Yeah, she's my #1 :) Fuck I'd do anything to see her perform.

One thing I love about her is her ability to keep pushing envelopes. She's constantly evolving and changing with every album. From Nellee Hooper producing her early stuff to her working independently it's a constant surprise. It's never boring, it's always thought provoking and challenging. She's a fucking genius if you ask me.

Ah, this reminds me... I saw a doco on her a few years back (I think it was on SBS) and there's this one bit where she's in her studio going nuts with the producing. It was amazing to watch her creative process, liek wow :-0

Anyone seen it? Know what it's called??? Can't find it anywhere :(

I certainly don't remember that! I was in a bit of a state that night though...he he.
Worst bit was i was in the seating area to the sides, with about 3000 teenage kids behind me going nuts and singing all the words....really wasn't so cool. But her performance was incredible all the same, regardless of the annoying teeny boppers.

I've listened to the new album once all the way through. It blew me away. :)

I'm gonna put it on again this afternoon and get a real opinion.

THAT would have been mental. You can hear their style filtering thru a couple of the Shepherd's Bush tracks on one of the live boxsets... but seeing them perform supporting Bjork would be unreal :)

Yep, especially seeing as I am a massive Plaid and Black Dog(the early stuff) fan....

Yeah, she's my #1 :) Fuck I'd do anything to see her perform.

For a costume party a few years ago, I went dressed as Bjork. My Mum is rather talented with sewing stuff and she made me the swan dress. It's fucking classic.

If I didn't look like a complete tosser in it, I'd so wear it to one of her performances when she eventually tours again.

Time/memory compression going on here . . . .

The tour with Plaid in her band was in 1996.

Her first solo tour with the Big Day Out was 1994.

Both those tours were great.

I caught her more recent show at Sonar in 2003 (http://www.bjork.com/facts/gigography/sub.php?id=8). It was amazing.

I did try to convince the Great Escape/Cockatoo Island people to book her for the Cockatoo Island festival several years ago. The logistics and cost would have been too much though.

The best chance of getting her back here is probably off the back of a Japan tour - and even then it is slim. It is a big entourage . . . .

Whoops. That sounds better........and yes I saw her at the big day out also, but the Festival hall gig was a lot more memorable for me(except which year it was doh!)

I think I saw the same doco. There was one segment where she was walking along a beach sampling waves breaking and then chopping the samples into percussion beats.

Awesome doco, i think it was played around the time of a previous album release, but havent seen it since, you tube maybe?
