I don't know if this belongs here, but I guess it belongs here more than anywhere else. I've listened to some but would like to find out more about this style of music.

Recommend away.

I'm more into the brutal electronic side (Front 242/Belgian EBM) than the later angsty rock with big guitars bit (Ministry, NIN), but I've got time for both sides...

I'm interested in finding more out about whichever side and so looking for some names to explore.

would you call caberet voltaire industrial?

absolutely...

industrial's like post-rock or broken beat or any number of genres that slipped from meaning one thing to meaning something similar but different.

early on it meant bands with an 'industrial' sound - think that amazing scene in lars von trier's dancer in the dark where bjork's dancing in the factory. the roots are in the musique concrete movement that's had such a huge influence on modern music. bands like einstürzende neubauten, the aforementioned throbbing gristle, coil, spk and foetus.

it's sometimes extended to the noise scene, but mistakenly i think, and later on became the semiotic home of ministry, nin, kmfdm, the slovenian situationists laibach and skinny puppy.

ahhh.... yes, musique concrete was the parallel i was looking for,

i must admit i haven't really heard much of this music, i did hear suicide in a record store once and it blew me away, i don't like his vocals but the music is incredible

There's a shite load of what has been coined industrial techno and the like on Ant-Zen and sister label Hymen. I prefer this kind of "industrial" over the coil, tb sound as often the vocals can ruin a really good solidly unnerving beat structure.

Look for artists such as Silk Saw, Vromb, C.O. Caspar, Innox Cappell, Fight Club, Solar X (although is kind of acid too), Scorn (although is more Drum and Noise if you ask me), Converter (to a degree), Enduser (also to a degree), the list goes on...
Hope that helps.

I really like Ministry's "The Mind Is A Terrible Thing to Taste" and "The Land of Rape and Honey"... Psalm 69 is great too but that's when they became more thrashy and stuff and it gets less and less industrial from there.

I find that most music that is classified as Industrial is pretty crap, though in theory I love it.

Foetus' stuff is good... I like 'Nail'

Fan of the Ant-Zen label myself - their mailorder is run rather well too so if you see something that intrigues you don't hesitate to contact 'em - they're happy to help you out.
Scorn are indeed kick ass - there's also some more industrially Black Lung songs that might suit.
