yeh, a lot of times strings can be quite cringe inducing, especially on old disco records that, as you say, edge towards the more obvious pop spectrum. But used sparingly and in the right way they can be rather cool.

and yes Miss M, horns get me horny too! :) been listening to a fair bit of afro-funk stuff of late and some of the horn work (especially trumpets) has been excellent!

I think I must of been brainwashed at one of those old disco fundamentalist camps at an early age. Thats not to say that I don't have an appreciation for the nu way. Edit the whole thing razor man, chop it up and make it better. Yeah you never miss a beat Julian. I did commit disco burglary on an A.K edit, but my Gordon's War is an og and I haven't heard the A.K edit. I found out after I got it that was a Baia staple. http://www.discogs.com/release/706650 You can't say that theres not dudes out there droppin "hard on in the pocket", " Do me or Die" and the rest of the top shelf edits you've been churning out.;)

I'm sure most of you Sydney guys were well aware of the deep house > disco/funk party 'Jam The Box', put on by Jilbert and Venturian and a couple others. I first saw Jilbert DJ at a rather main-room house sunday night party at YU nightclub in Dec '03, and to this date it was the only time i've been on a dancefloor literally calling out for the DJ to please stop the fucking music - about 15 of us were remaining on the dancefloor at 6:45am monday morning, our limbs basically non-functional but EVERY single track he was dropping was one of those "ohhhh shit!!" moments, and we all just persevered past the pain barrier. Me and my mate sat out the front on the pavement after it closed for about 30 minutes - covered in sweat and just reeling from a life-changing dancefloor experience.

Anyways, Jilbert relocated to Hong Kong at the end of 2005, leaving Jam The Box in hiatus. Numerous times i'd see Venturian out at US deep house nights through 2006, and he always hinted at putting on more JTB parties. He also always raved about the party 'Paradise Lost', and i suspect in the end he felt this party was an adequate enough representation of quality music/clubbing for the Sydney scene.

Enough rambling, Jilbert has just put out a new double-cd for download - first disc covers disco (original and new) with a few curveballs thrown in to keep it interesting for the listener, while the second disc covers all things house (once again, both original and contemporary). Just had my first listen through tonight... to describe it all in a word? Authentic.
