Finally got my copy of Battles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battles)' new/debut album 'Mirrorred' and I must say I'm mightily impressed. In fact, I havn't been this excited about a band since happening upon Jaga Jazzist or The Cinematic Orchestra. Not sure what you'd call it exactly, but it's pretty damn off the hook; evidenced quite nicely in the clip for the single 'Atlas.' Those vocals are just crazy.

I've found most of WARP's bands to be pretty so-so, not really up to the standard set by their electronic producer labelmates, but these guys have sure gotten me worked up.

Anyone else heard the release? Your thoughts?

PS: I like the clips that 1stAveMachine have done for WARP. This and the one for 'Ted (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ymh13G8YgQE)' by Clark are awesome.

peep 1stAve's video for Alias' sixes last and the Tunit ads they did for Adidas. awesome stuff.

i still haven't heard the battles LP, but their EPs were pretty cool. agreed on the bands signed to warp thing, too. it's cool they tried to branch out, but they really just fell a long way short of what they'd done with the electronica stuff.

Yeah I've had it for ages. One of my favourite albums so far this year. Easily.

It was only released recently but has been available on download sites for a while.

I finally got my legitimate copy yesterday and it sounds even better at CD quality than MP3!! :)

Chiastic, Battles are kinda referred to as a math-rock band, although I think the term avant-rock is probably more appropriate. Either way its a rockin album but an acquired taste methinks.

Believe it or not, but math metal exists too.

That's where I first heard it. In the 90s Meshuggah were sometimes referred to as "mathcore". Thought it was funny then and I think it's funny now!

Yeah, I tried pushing mirrored at a party last weekend and found nothing but haters. Bunch of goddamn crumbs I say.

can't wait to see them. i've been giving their "EP C / B EP" solid listens for the past three months. *sigh* can't ait to see this all happen live.

Mirrored is a funtastic album. The photography on the cover and in their poster just makes me just want to drool.

Stumbled across Mirrored a little while ago and am now absolutely in love with it. Have been selective of who I have offered listens to though as I am sure not all of my friends will give it the time required to warm to it. Picked up EP C/B EP yesterday and am really enjoying delving further into what these guys have to offer. It is some of the most precisely smooth and thought out sound structures I have ever heard, and it sooo works!! I'm afraid I have massive expectations for these lads at The Gaelic club in Sept!! bring it!

I really want to go check these guys out but I don't think I can justify the expense when I'm saving for exchange (and first have to pay off my debt).

Lame.

So... They're over pretty much.

What a cock. Someone should tell him his solo album had nothing on Battles.

The drummer in that band is John Stamier, from Helmet and Tomahawk with Mike Patton. Saw Battles live a couple years back with My Disco and while I love their CD live they were a bit sloppy unfortunately. They got these Gibson echoplex pedals that let them do loops and if the drummer goes even slightly out i can get a bit mesy. Its pretty cool they're pushing those boundaries and they are one of my fave bands. Theres a disc before mirrored I think but havent heard

Shame. I echoed the "haven't been this excited about a band since..." sentiment after I first heard Mirrored too, but I suppose it's better to go out on a high than to not meet expectations with further releases. The thing that was so exciting about it for me was that it sounded truly fresh.

I don't know about that, Platinum Rows is quite an incredible arrangment. Who know's what he'll do.

i liked mirrored but they were way overblown for what they were. so many better bands in the math-rock genre.

Its John Stanier. I saw Helmet at a Big Day Out years ago. Awesome set!

There's two amazing EPs on Dim Mak. Both were melded for a Warp disc afterwards.

I agree. It's interesting seeing this thread (I'm the OP) as my enthusiasm for them has since dwindled. I saw them play at The Zoo and they were superb but since hearing some of the older mathy stuff from Don Cab etc I see them more as an evolution of that sound. I think when I first heard them I was really unfamiliar with that whole Touch and Go scene so they really blew me away.
