View Full Version : Techno question
I dont have a great knowledge of techno but I know what I like and what I dont like.
I dont quite have the stamina/patience for real bangin' stuff.
The stuff I am really interested in finding i have heard in only two places:
Biz-E's SPR CD (and a lot of his sets).
The sort of stuff derrick may plays. (Particularly the MayDay mix)
I guess its the slower, more house sounding techno but its not tech-house...
Anyone wanna help someone trying to learn??
Interesting question.
Try:
Marco Carola - Open System.
Ben Sims - Escapism / Theory of Interpretation.
Surgeon - Counterbalance Collection.
Even maybe:
Valentino Kanzyani - Rock the Discoteque - although it warms up towards the end.
I hope Im in the ball park for you :offchops:

No offence rezok, but think some of those might be a bit too banging... I think havik is after the more soulfull, deeper, Detroit sounding techno... or what the Melbourne tekno people think is 'house' :P hehe...
I'd recommend the Adam Beyer 'Stockholm Mix Sessions Vol 3' mix CD on Turbo, and Deetron's 'In The Mix' mix CD on Music Man, both have lots of lush, soulfull, intelligent, house-ish, deep, funky techno indeed, both feature quite a bit of Detroit techno too.
Both of those CD's are/were tracklisted on this Tunes & Tracks Forum somewhere... I'm yet to hear Ben Sims 'Escapism' but told it's very good too, but probably pretty full-on putting that many tracks into the mix in 74 minutes.
I'm sure RZ-1 and 618 could recommend a heap of Detroit techno artists, releases as well. Biz is a big fan of artists/labels from the D as well.
You'll also hear a lot of this more slower, musical, funky type of techno on my Pulseradio show 'TechFunked' on Pulseradio, Monday night's 10pm-12am (Syd/Mel | +10GMT). http://www.techfunked.pulseradio.net
Cheers DJ Dave McCann (TECHiONE)
I knew it.
*always thinking hard*
Doh!
I'll be sure to check the show...
I am begininning to collect records (to play, not to collect) and want to develop sets that begin quite housey (with a tech edge) and roll into these more detroit sounding tracks - its just my knowledge is a little lacking despite really enjoying that sound.
Cheers rezok - i'll still listen to your recommendations - I'm always up for suggestions...
I'll be sure to tune into the show...

I'm no detroit afficionado either, how about some of Gaetek, Misstress Barbara, Oxia and Samuel L's cruisy stuff? Maybe check out BPitch Control, Disko B and Frankie Bones on a more housey tip.
When you find good German house I don't think it gets much better. Super funky with plenty of Detroit influence. Unfortunately a lot of their good vinyl never leaves Germany/continental Europe. :(
Hey Havik,
Here's a few rekkids along the tip i think you're after ::
ARIL BRIKHA deeparture in time LP (on Derrick May's Transmat label)
SOUL DESIGNER walking on a little cloud LP (F-Comm)
DJ BONE subject detroit CD (eukatech)
ROLANDO aztec mystic mix CD (u.r)
YOUNGSTERS lemon orange CD (F-Comm)
Anything by the artists Kevin Saunderson/E-Dancer, Kenny Larkin, Stacey Pullen, Carl Craig, Dan Curtin, Moodymann, Theo Parrish, Fabrice Lig, Mad Mike, Laurent Garnier, alexander Kowalski.
Labels Planet E, Underground Resistance, Transmat/Fragile, KMS, Svek, Residual, Elypsia
Just a start!

lol @ techione....oi don't generalise about us Melbourne people:P
that Deetron "in the mix" LP/CD is lush, one of my fave CD's this year is the Aril Brikha one Mattt mentioned.
check my review for a more in depth opinion

You may even get into some of the quirky german deep/tech house stylee on playhouse
The "Famous When Dead" playhouse CD compiliation is a fantastic showcase of that sound.

hehehe, I think I stole that comment from you Drex... I remember seeing some post from you, in regard to some of the punters 'not getting it' at some Melbourne techno party... *tounge in cheek* 'Look mate! if it's not bangin hard, percussive, fast, relentless noise, then it's not techno, it's house, alright!'
Hey nice selection Mattt! Yeah those mix CD's by Deetron, and Adam Beyer I mentioned, feature artists like... Kevin Saunderson (E-Dancer), Aril Brikha, Soul Designer (Fabrice Lig), Octave One, BFC (Carl Craig), Kenny Larkin, Jesper Dahlback, and more...
I'd recommend check out some of Samuel L Session's SLS releases too.
I've also seen this CD around in the shops too, looks ok.

hypercity force tracks mixed by andrew weatherall
lovely little mix (except for the last track) of stuff off force tracks (sub label of force inc). sitting nicely between house, techno and almost glitch, nice and warm sounding. definitely recommended as a break from the pounding end of the spectrum :)
the dj bone mix mattt mentioned is also pretty neat.

Richie Hawtin:)
The poor guy in the first thread got drilled :offchops:
All he wanted was chill teks and we gave him the house and land package. Why didn't someone suggest Pounding Grooves or Dave Clarke?
Oh and KemBoy: thought about Umek and yes, bangin disco, but too hard by the end (much like Valentino!)
Hawtin is a great choice actually. DE-9II is a very very interesting piece of work. Quality personified.
And as an aside, I went to a birthday party early on Saturday night and was asked to bring music. Arriving at 10pm the rear bar was already rocking and the birthday girl runs up and collects the recomennded CD. Given the timing, the vibe and my general feeling, I thought Rock the Discoteque would be a good choice.
So in it went. And it opened nicely. Slightly more upbeat disco and techno - then I thought to myself - in 15 minutes this room will be swinging from the ceiling because of the subtlely of the mixup from disco to quite slammin'...and low and behold at 30 minutes in when Mumps makes an appearance, I realised, perhaps I over-reacted...

Try Feiern and Heilstyle by Johannes Heil, Pallette Backstock by John Tejada, Recognition by Jacek Sienkewicz. Tue Spirit compilation on Tresor has 3 discs of mixed styles.
Hey Havik.....
You can try this site called satelliterecords.com Its a U.S based record company. All the tracks that are listed have a 2 minute sample track up loaded in Real player format which showcases all the mixes. Just go to "Listening Booth" and I'm sure you are bound to hear something you like.

as a progcat who has been seduced by the sounds of techno, but cant handle it too banging (aarrghhh dj rush run away RUN AWAY!) ..i suggest...
1. Christian Smith 'Tronic Treatment'
2. Adam Beyer 'Stockholm Mix Sessions Vol 3' mix CD
3. Andy Weatherall 'Hypercity Forcetracks'
reckon #3 is your style, but #1 and 2 rock for getting into techno :)

So havik... have you bought/listened to any of the many recommendations as yet? keen to hear your thoughts.
techione,
just finished up exams - but was studying to your show - tres enjoyable...
i have only just set up my decks and have been practicing with my records and a mates (he has a lot of classic/siesta/tango house) which is nice for learning to mix...
over the next week or two i will check out this stuff in more detail, give you an idea of my taste on this stuff...
the records i buy are electro / breaks (less gurny) / and tech-house (but not tech house!!!) - i guess i mean deep tech - great example is metro area / swag remixes / also like felix's new stuff - when ever i pickup the german tech labels i like it but i just like stuff with more balls without getting too bangin - i guess when you try to limit your spending you become choosy
