Has anyone got a recommendation for some decent near field monitors? I haven't got the budget for NS-10's, but I'm after something that will be suitable for a project studio with a computer based setup. I'm thinking around the $500 mark. Please inform me if this is wishful thinking. Any takers? :?

Tannoy Reveal near field monitors are pretty good, and would be worth the extra $ (I think around $800)

without sounding too rude let me educate you on the NS-10's

FUCK THEM!!!!!!!!!!

they are crap and no-one buys them anymore. especially since they are discontinued.

they WERE the standard ONLY because everyone had them

ask any engineer... they are shit. i hate them

i use behringer TRUTHS

now active monitors are cheap and portable you will find a lot of engineers like myself taking their monitors with them

email me if u need any lower budget advice....

The behinger truths are a direct copy of The Mackie HR-824's.

At Turramurra music they call the 'strewths'.

You said it DUDE!!!!

I saved & saved & bought some active genelecs... REEEAAAL nice ...however for less $$$ i would check out the MACKIE range of monitors, they're pretty good for techno sounds.... oh... or some KRK's dunno what model but I've heard 'em in some studios, sound good & I don't think they're at the totally expensive end of things.

This is a pretty old thread, but just in case anyone checks in I wanna drop my own advice on Yamaha NS-10's.......

I spent a few years installing gear in studios and record company boardrooms in Sydney, and quite often NS-10's were involved. I run my own studio now, I don't wanna be a know-it-all, but I'll hand out what I have learn't for free.

To be blunt, NS-10's sound like shit - If you suggest NS-10's as a listening speaker then you need your head checked. However, they are the industry standard 'crap speaker' and therefore the best yardstick to use if projects are moving in and/or out of your studio.

To sum up what I think and what I have heard from other industry people about NS-10's....

"If you can make a mix sound good on the 10's, then it will sound great anywhere!"

Take from this what you will, however keep in mind that what ever you record will be played over radio with heavy compression, and if somebody purchases your album it will probably be played on a basic home system....

Don't get me wrong, the cleaner you get the sound at the start the better, but leave the $10,000 monitors to the mastering studios!
