I can't wait for the new superclub Family to open in the valley. Brissie's first! Its about time we get serious about the dance culture up here, and what better way to show it than a $6million superclub. The ITM exclusive on the club makes it out to be pretty damn good! But just when is it to open?????

who knows....they're taking their time arent they?!! rather weird....

but as for the superclub being a better club? cant say i'd agree with that. superclubs are usually not known for their quality music policy. dance music is on the up and up in bris, so while a superclub might make it more accessible to some, dont close your eyes and ears to the quality sounds existing in bris now. support the scene and it will only get stronger. get thee to mantra for the quality sounds..

Spot on, PC... a superclub with a stylish appearance and trendy atmosphere will draw clientele away from those horrible places in the CBD that pass for nightclubs in Brisbane, those who want to get into dance music but lack the fortitude to step out into the valley. It can be a stepping stone for them as the Tube and the Beat were for me when I was a strapping young teenager who had the shits with hearing Jimmy Barnes on a dancefloor.

But diversity is the key to sustainable, stable growth of dance culture in Brisbane. A superclub is not going to suddenly make the Brisbane dance scene as developed as Sydney or London. When I was in the UK last October, I jumped on a train to Sheffield and went to Gatecrasher's 6th birthday. While I had the most fantastic time and spent the whole night going nuts (straight, too!) with a fully energised crowd, nothing was played that I hadn't heard before.

I too say, bring on the superclub, but don't forget the little guys too. You can have just as much fun partying with 20 people as you can with 2000!

tim-e ...well said! and the opening of the Family is not far off apparently....

Latest from the events section of Pulseradio....

Hey Polecat

I gotta disagree :) with that comment about superclubs not being known for thier quality music. Yes, i would say that they are not known for being innovative, but i think the quality of music found in them is consistently good. Sure it might not be cutting edge stuff but it is usually above average and consistent - pick up a copy of Ministry (UK) or mixmag and you will just about sh*t your pants when you see the line up in a superclub like MOS or Gatecrasher on any given friday or saturday.

But really, how do you define "Superclub" and is Family a superclub by your definition?

cheers

hello Nardo :)

Let's put it this way....Syd or Melb Superclub Vs UK Superclub.
It's a whole different scene! I was reading on ITM about Kinkidisco @ Home in Sydney, where the dance floor was littered with beer bottles and shot glases. Now contrast this to Super DJ playing down @ Gatecrasher. I rest my case. Those UK dance clubs were built upon a growing scene of dance music on a scale thats way different to that which exists in Australia....thus the line up of DJs you will find in UK clubs each w'end.

>>But really, how do you define "Superclub" and is Family a superclub by your definition?

I'm not the one that labelled Family a superclub, their publicity team did that. I would consider a Superclub though to be a large scale venue, which apparently Family is, by Brisbane standards. In my experience most "Superclubs" are those marketed as large scale venues, with soooper lighting rigs and often killer sound systems, such as QBH in Melb where PvD played on the w'end (and it had all these things)

On the topic of music.....a Melb Superclub will give you a night of consistently crap, mediocre top 40 style dance tunes or house music for the glam crowds. Pass....I'm going out to hear music that I know will be fresh, or of the style I like, or something unknown by a DJ with a good rep.

cheers :)

I think if the club employs DJs who are known for playing quality music, whether they be up&coming or established, and the management allows the DJs to do their job and choose the songs instead of being told what to play by the management as has happened in other cases, then the club will be known for playing quality music as well. so, it's up to the club's management really to decide whether they want the rep for the tunes, or the crowds..

typically in Brisbane the more quality events get smaller crowds than the places playing more popularly recognised music (there are a couple of exceptions..) so, if a new larger club such as the family wanted larger crowds to cover it's (I'm guessing) high running costs, it could be assumed that it might put some commercial/popular dance music in at least one of the areas to pull the crowds.. that's not to say it might not have more of the music called underground in some of the other areas.. I think personally it would be good to have a setup like that and I think it would work for them and in the long run would only be better for the dance community here. because it would introduce people who were coming to the club for the commercial music (which, because they usually haven't heard anything better, it's good to them) to the more quality music, which might lead to them attending other events and make them more successful as well.

I think it might also pull some people into the valley again and this could also be good for the surrounding clubs... if the people don't like the music being played there they might head off to one of the other events instead, when normally they might have stayed home.. of course it could also be bad for the other clubs if people stayed there all night.. I guess only time will tell.. it all depends on what is played and if people are willing to pay the $25 cover regularly.. (this is the part I'm not so sure will work..Brisbane people are renowned for only wanting to pay low cover charges..) but if it's glamourous etc.. some people will pay for that I suppose.. just to be part of it. anyway, it'll be interesting to see what they do and what is played there. I know most people I know will be dropping in when it first opens to check it out.. I guess the question is.. when/if the novelty will wear off?

You tell em AliaK....I think you pretty much summed it up there!!

Has anyone heard anything else about Family out of interest? I think I may be too old to dance by the time this place opens up.

good job polarbear :) when it first opened it was a swish venue, though i preferred metropolis (in the bottom of the myer centre). It always kept that alternative edge, while transformers went the way of the yuppies...

In relation to beer bottles at Home to UK superclub and obviously not many, I give you a couple of numbers

UK - £3-5
Australia - $30-40

You know what prices those are for. I to, rest my case :)

God I could do with an imported beer right now. I like the really bitter ones that come out of Holland. Amsterdam's a prime beer brewing city I hear. :offchops:
