To start off I must show my appreciation for this relatively new forum by yelling...

AAAOOOWWW CAN I TAKE IT TO THE BRIDGE!

Anyway, if anyone knows of kickin live funk outfits then let us know!

I saw Aussie band " The Super Heavyweights" at Peat Ridge Festival last year and they smashed it! Well worth catching them if you can.

Jackie Orsazcky (sp?) is a Sydney mainstay on the jazz/funk scene.

ummm, my brain has deserted me and I can't think of any more Aussie groups right now but there is a very rad outfit called "Funkcomolegusta" from Brasil whom I have on high rotation on my ipod... kind of Brand New Heavies-ish but with far far better horn arrangements. Definately check them out if you like to get down!

Duncan M & Spitchen, great choices.

Limiting it to acts/peeps who are still active today playing live or releasing material etc...

Locals who do it for me..

The Bamboos/Cookin On 3 Burners
The Hands
Flow Dynamics (RIP Rhibosome)
Professor Groove and the Booty Affair
Jackie Orszaczky (not playing out as much these days ?)
Regal (new solo album is very tidy)
Ray Mann Three
Good Buddha
Kid Confucius
EON Beats
Lanu

Always on the look-out, any more tips greatly appreciated :)

Overseas

Quantic Soul Orchestra
Breakestra
The New Mastersounds
Lefties Soul Connection
Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings
Alice Russell
Beatfanatic
Poets of Rhythm
Nicole Willis and the The Soul Investigators
Fertile Ground (More spiritual jazz but still great)
Greyboy

The Freestyle Records Various comp chosen by Duncan M is ball bustingly good & a great place to start.

Plus the Respect Overdue series noted by Mr Love (3 volumes old) out on Creative Vibes is also well worth checking for compiling rare jazz, funk, soul, & soundtrack music from Aust & NZ in the 70s/80s.

I can't remember who writes the good column in the back of 3D World (Blaze maybe?), but they were giving lots of love to Osaka Monaurail

Excellent thread. I have albums of about 1/2 the mentioned artists - now I've got a whole lot more to experience :)

<insert plug>

For those in Sydney that like to avoid club environments on occasion and sometimes would prefer to hang out in a cool, non-shiny, Melbourne-style bar listening and boogying to funk (old and new including some of the artists mentioned in this thread), disco, boogie, soul, hip-hop and party jams kinda stuff.

At Melt Bar in KX each Saturday night, Simon Caldwell (Mad Racket) and Oscar (from Good Groove Records) have a residency playing these sorta tunes.

I'm playing some tunes this Saturday night as a guest so come on down if you ain't up to much else. Simon won't be playing this weekend as he has Racket on but he's usually there most Saturdays.

Free before 10pm, 10 bucks after 10pm.

<end plug>

:P :)

Anyone got the Baker Brothers album? There's a track on Florian Keller's Party Keller album which is the goods.

Superheavyweights + George Rigatos Collective are playing at Will and Toby's tomorrow night. I have heard that George Rigatos Collective are pretty nice so it might also be worth checking out.

Watussi are sort of similar to Good Buddha I reckon, but both bands have come along in leaps and bounds over the last couple of years.

Rastawookie a bit more dubby, but still pretty funky.

JulienLove, is there any Daly Wilson Big Band on that Australian 70s funk album? Those cats were pretty mad, a little bit on the Maynard Ferguson side of big bandness.

It was my first EVER concert..... I was inside my mummy's tummy :)

Galapagos Duck cuts it for me, on top of those already mentioned, as well as a (no defunct) group called The Corners.
