What are people using for monitoring their sets at home in the bedroom? I'm guessing studio monitors are a bit over the top for this application.

I need something with reasonably good bass response being that I play DnB. Doesnt need to go stupidly loud as I live in a small apartment :)

Cheers!

I use Behringer Truth 2030A's. They're small, cheap, probably not the best studio monitors in the world in terms of fidelity but for bedroom DJs purposes where I live they absolutely BANG.

How do they sound down low ? I'm sure they sound punchy for those of you playing nice 4/4 electronic stuff but how do they satisfy the big low bass tones found in DnB

Hmm, to answer my own question, perhaps I'll team them up with the Truth B2092A sub.

Now, whether to go the 2030A or 2031A... pospsibly the 2030A will be better paired with the sub.. anyone using the sub?

I have the KRK Rokit RP8's, they are wicked. Sound so much better than any truths i listened to.

My bro has rocket 8's...... they are pimpin'. But I use Yamaha HP50m's and they go alright... good down low but I play house so I can't speak for how they'd handle DnB

Yeah, I dont doubt that most studio monitors will reproduce nice crisp bass drums with ease.. just weighing up between 6" or 8" woofers if I'm going to add a sub into the equation.

after reading various production/dj threads, i think im the only person who uses a standard stereo system to monitor my decks and production.

Rokit 6's here, and for a small apartment they work perfectly imo :-)

IMO having crappy speakers at home is not a bad thing, makes playing out a lot easier.

totally no need for studio monitors

check out ebay for amps and speakers ... match yourself up a decent quialy pair and you can have a adequately loud and quality sound system for under a couple of hundred $$

i have a pair of mordaunt short hi-fi speakers from the late 80s or early 90s. i forget the model off my head, but they each have 2 x 8" mid/bass drivers and a 1" titanium tweeter. compared to studio monitors the high mids and highs are lacking, but i much prefer them in the home environment because they have sufficient bass, but also very high power handling which when matching with my dope yamaha amp, its perfect for house parties ;D

Iv'e just moved out to a unit, so I think I'm going to have to ditch the 6" drivers and drop to 5" :(

Well I finally got out to demo some studio monitors with my favourite DnB demo CD :) I already decided in my head that the Behringer Truth's would be perfect - right price and adequate sound quality for some bedroom mixing. I was quite surprised to find they were very harsh on the high end and the bottom end from the 8" model was far from impressive. The Alesis M1's 6" really impressed.. very crisp, sharp and seemingly accurate bass and the highs felt quite natural and clear. I'm surprused how well it did on the low end despite the little 6" driver. The Tapco 8" was equally impressive and naturally pushed a little lower than the M1's, almost low enough to not need to consider pairing up a sub.

So it seems no matter which route I go I will DEFINITELY need a sub, most of the deep driving basslines seem to be well below the active crossover point of the mid drivers. There weren't any subs in stock for demo, so I'll need to wait until next week to firm up my choices. I'm guessing the M1's with a well matched sub will be the ideal solution!

6"s should be HEAPS for most rooms
unless you actually have something control room sized

i still recommend the event tr-6s (i have a pair), they go down nice and low
the behringers will be a fair bit cheaper though

you could also go passive and save yourself a bunch, im sure

How do the rokit's fair for both spinning house AND producing with reason?

Also would they go alright connected to a PC for games and movies? Or even hooked up to a HDTV?

It seems all the 6"s start dropping off quite fast below 50hz which just doesnt cut it for what I play. I'm sure it would be adequate for those playing beats, and I have no doubt that alot of the 8" selections would absoutely perfect the sound of house, breaks, etc.

I'm quite keen to get a demo of the Event TR6's.. I'll need to find somewhere in Sydney that stocks them, same goes for the Rokits!
