I believe this has been discussed previously, but after some first-hand experience lately with several pairs of mkIIIs and their "wavering" pitch dramas I went hunting to get to the bottom of why only some of these units are having troubles and others are practically perfect (ie. as good as mkII :)).

We all know Pioneer released a firmware update 2.20 late last year but I only just realised (not being a mkIII owner myself and not worrying too much about specifics) that this should take care of the pitch problem...

"Improved Sound Quality with Master Tempo
Sound quality has been improved during playback of discs when the Master Tempo feature is set to 'On'.
Improved Accuracy in the Display of BPM
The display of BPM during disc playback has been made more accurate."

Has anybody performed the update and can confirm any improvement? Links to the download (http://www.pioneer.eu/eur/content/support/support/upgrade/CDJ1000MK3.html) and help file (http://files.pioneer.eu/files/brochures/2006/MMD/CDJ1000MK3_Upgrade_EN.pdf).

The help file also shows how to check the version of the mkIII in 10seconds, so maybe anyone who cares enough about this niggling issue should carry a cdr with the update on it, check the venue's fimware version and do a sly upgrade before their set!

Wasn't the problem with the 1st bunch of mk3, I think it lies in the hardware not the firmware, If you are buying new mk3 look for the mk3 mkII{:-(

Yes I heard that rumour also, BUT then I heard a second rumour that it was the SECOND batch of units that were faulty :~( . It makes more sense for it to be a firmware problem, considering the pitch and master tempo elements have been a mainstay of the 1000 since they first came out

Agreed... any chance you could find out what firmware version they are? You just press and hold the reloop/exit button (next to the in and out buttons) for 10 seconds, then power on/off to reset.

2.20 does improve the master tempo and pitch issues.

Before I had my own MK3's I played in a club with a huge soundsystem in London where the firmware was not updated and I could tell the booth monitors bass was causing havoc with beatmatching.
If I turned the monitor down a bit it didn't affect it and if the monitor was up loud it would.

From what I could figure that was happening was either the bass was stopping the platter for a micro second or it was turning the platter a mirco amount (times x bpm) it would slightly trainwreck. The platter was just to sensitive!

The new firmware fixed the issue and after that time I carry the firmware update in my CD case and even updated a couple of machines myself before playing once.

Hi Guys,

Im in the process of buying a set of brand new Pioneer cdj mkIII's and was wondering if I need to be on the look out to ensure the unit I buy has the latest 2.20 firmware version?

Even if it doesn't, it's easy to update it. I would say it's irrelevant to worry about firmware when buying

And back to the version research: Tonic's units (the ones I rarely have problems with) are 2.20, and a mate of mine's (the ones I notice suffer quite alot) are ALSO 2.20... Throws the theory out the window of the firmware being at fault when talking about pitch dramas

Oh well

Hey people I'm about to be really annoying.

I just bought some cdj mk3's about 3 months ago brand new. I have no idea what you guys are talking about here. I'm no noob dj, it's just I have been a lil hesitant to get into the new technology. So I am not really understanding what is going on in this thread. Could someone please explain to me what the defective Cdjs do? Like what are the symptoms? Just wondering if I need to upgrade mine.

Thanks

How do you know what software version the CDJ MKIII is running and how do you update it with the latest version being 2.20?

Would love to get more feedback on this just like defected819 has.

Cheers guys

how can you tell which batch of MK3's you've gotten?

Turn machine CDJ on. With no discs in. Hold the Reloop/Exit button for over 10 seconds.

It'll come up with version number on display

Just checked mine.

V2.20

I was talking to a very reputable person about this over the weekend who mentioned that the mkIII pitch problem is related to the addition of the jog wheel resistance adjustment knob. Pioneer are apparently aware of this and agree, therefore have done something about it. Unfortunately he wasn't 100% sure WHAT was done about it, but is certain it is a separate issue to the v2.20 firmware update.

Will keep researching...

Very informative, thanks all. I've been playing on mk3's which have the pitch display variance issue. Thankfully if you can mix by ear you're all good, rather than relying on the display.

Still, for the CDJs in the club it's good to know how to fix the issue!

is the firmware easily updated on the spot? i know it is on the denons... maybe burn the update CD and take it gigging?

Tredman

yes i believe it is as easy as the denons just takes a few minutes longer

I burnt the update CD, and followed the linked instructions, but the CDJ didn't go into a 'download' menu as specified... any hints?

I burnt the CD as a data cd.

I held down the reloop button when the 1000 was off, then I turned it on and inserted the CD when 'no disc' appeared, but nothing.

Scratch that - I just realised I wasn't pressing BOTH the record button and the reloop/exit button - silly me. I'll try again and it should defo work.

Reading things is .. good.
