Been getting into a fair bit of african influenced afrobeat, funk, soul and stuff lately. Really enjoying the sounds. Such as:
Antibalas
RAS
Kokolo
Hugh Masekela
Femi and Fela Kuti - of course!
Les Barons
And various stuff on LuakaBop.
any other suggestions?

I went to see Afro Moses and Moses O Jah at the Basement a few weeks back and amongst a heap of different afro influenced styles, he played some pretty sick afrobeat. Wicked gig all round (except for the stupid dinner tables getting in the way of the dancefloor).

I remember taking the piss out on a disco LP titled "Disco Soccer". There was a 12" released from that LP. I'm Ready/Koko Si. I'm Ready is a great rip off from the Salsoul Orchestra's "Your Just The Right Size". More on the moogy tip. Finally picked it up for an arm n a leg.

fela is nigerian. mulatu is ethiopian. completely diff sounds
fela can't be beat. shouldn't be edited either imo
fela is nigerian. mulatu is ethiopian. completely diff sounds
they are both still regarded as afrobeat though, maybe if you wanted to get technical Mulatu would possibly considered more afro jazz though?
as for fela's lps check out Zombie (Barclay 1977)Mark, zombie and everything scatter are for me 2 of his best songs and are both on one lp, I think the reason a lot of people rate the expensive shit lp is because, (a) it is hard to come across (i only have the editions makossa version) and (b) pete rock sampled it
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBgewcFh-cg
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RceF1M6SGI8
Fela holds a very special place in my heart, and he did actually invent afro beat, but i still think there are quite a few albums out there than can stand side by side with many of his albums, I am not trying to argue with any one, and i certainly would not consider myself an expert on afro, if i get a chance i will rip a few songs and upload them to share some of the stuff I consider worthy

not sure if you have checked this or not, but http://voodoofunk.blogspot.com/ Frank is the man, i was lucky enough to be able to meet up with him and grab a few records at the last wfmu fair in NY, he doesn't post full albums, but his mixes are on very high rotation for me.

People who are in Melbourne (or who are going to Womadelaide, or who are keeping an eye out for the show in Sydney that Russ Dewbury promises me that he will do with them this year) should keep an ear and an eye out for the Public Opinion Afro Orchestra, whose show at the Australasian World Music Expo was one of the best sets I saw.

i think i read/heard an answer to the question as to why fela sings in english.. i think one of main reasons was that more people could hear and understand the message in his music.

this is good but tracklist is wrong on the digital copy which makes it difficult but the cover of 'let's start' by fela which soundway reissued some time ago is cracking.
that 'the spirit of fela is alive and well" 12" is really special, always gets the floor moving
here's some nice fela LPs from those box sets they issued about 8 years ago with the liners and pics from the shrine. i have no OG fela LPs.

The Strides and the Liberators played at Notes last night - fantastic show, probably the best gig by the Strides I've been to (and I've seen them a few times now). Picked up the new albums by both bands - haven't had a chance to give the Liberators' disc a proper listen yet, but the new Strides album is seriously good.
By the way, I note that Osibisa have just been added to the Bluesfest lineup. Does anyone know how much of the original band is still touring?
