View Full Version : nOOb Q - best basic 2 or 3 channel mixer to get?
Now that I have decided to get CDJ-800s, Im deciding which mixer to get. It is just for home use, so doesnt have to have an absolutely amazing sound clarity.
I only really need a 2 channel, but would quite like a 3 channel, as I have a turntable (and a bit of vinyl), and I might eventually like to get a 3rd CDJ for mucking around with live acapellas and stuff like that.
Ive been looking seriously at a 2nd hand Pioneer DJM-600 - it probably has far more bells and whistles than I need (and a lot more than I should spend) but it looks sexy as hell, and I like the idea of that sampler recorder thing that you can use at the end of a track. I think that will be the kind of mixer I never have to upgrade.
I would ideally only like to spend around $500 (I realise a DJM 600 will prob be about $800).
Suggestions?
Thanks for all your help guys - us n00bs appreciate learning about something we really have no idea about to start with!

Do you know A) how to mix already or are you B) a complete newbie learning the robes?
A) get as good a mixer as you can possibly afford with as many channels/features as you want
B) get the most simplistic 2 channel mixer around with as few bells and whistles as possible as they're a complete distraction to learning to beat match. Any old piece of shit mixer for at home play through a crappy stereo/mini system etc will do you fine for years. If after this time you know you want to stick DJing out, might perhaps put on your own parties, then upgrade to a mixer which has great quality sound and can run a big rig.

$240, 3 channels, kill switches on you two prime channels, cross fader adjust curve and reverse switch, send/return for efx, master, booth and record out...electrical tape over the beat counters though!
There's no real advantage to running a Rane of Allen and Heath through shit stereo/speakers...the only added bonus will be the record out will be better quality than say a Numark or Behringer...or Pioneer for that matter.
/waits for flaming about suggesting a Behringer mixer...but fuck it, I owned out of those exact mixers and it served me well and good for years with no faults whatsoever. Wouldn't want to run a large system with it, but for at home use, it was fine
I know how to mix, but only very, very basically (ie I know how to do it, I just cant do it very well at all) - I need LOADS of practice, hence why Im buying the gear.
I have heard Behringers are absolutely apalling mixers that will only last a few months and the sound quality deteriorates extremely quickly (Ive heard the sound starts to bleed through other channels???), but I guess for a real cheap price it wouldnt matter (would it)?.
I have a very, very good Pioneer stereo if I need it for house parties etc, but would be buying a fairly cheap set of speakers for the bedroom. I would like to be recording my mixers (once ive gotten better).

Numark DXM-06

Yeah, go for something from the Numark DXM series...I'd be vary wary of a 2nd hand DJM 600...far from being renowned for great build quality, or sound quality, and the exf unit is usually the first time to fuck out.
Behringer ain't great, don't get me wrong there, but hey, the one I had lasted me 3 years with no issues, no bleeding etc.
And it's kinda a silly question really...best BASIC mixing I can get...end of the day, it's still going to be an average piece of shit mixer, innit? You either want a basic mixer, or you want the best mixer :haha:

I reckon they look OK. The third (or + 1) channel is in the centre bit of the Nuo2, its basically the same as the other two fader channels, ie. can be cued in the HPs has a gain knob etc with the exception that there is a rotary volume control (not a fader), and there is only a 2 band eq and no phono input. Pretty good little mixer TBH

I bought a Vestax 3 channel PMC 170A for about $500 I think about 8 years ago and it still does me fine to this day. Doesn’t have any fancy bells or whistles but does the job for home just fine. It’s a discontinued model but im sure they have an equivalent these days. Def recommend Vestax.

yea ... i took an old Vestax PMC off a mate a few years ago ... i liked it as a mixer ... but alas it had been flogged hard at a few parties and doesn't quite work the way it should :meh:
wonder if it's fixable :stroke:
i bought my dxm 06 about 2 yrs ago, the efx are mangled, the 2nd channel is rooted and the earth is stuffed but it has been raped to the shitter by myself and ma mates.

How long ago?
I payed that for a DXM-09 about a year ago.
As for buying a mixer, id rather get something cheaper but brand new.Who knows what has happened to any 2nd hand mixer.
Ive seen beer spilled on a few, you'd never know from looking at them but who knows what damage has been done inside.
What do people think about this? It looks like evrything I want

or get a new mixer ?!?!
Win win - they're shit mixers!
After much looking around - Ive narrowed the search down considerably to getting a Numark 3 channel mixer.
I really, really want 3 channels over 2, the more I think about it.
So that gives me 3 different options -
Numark DM2050 - $199ish new
Numark DM3050 - $249 new
Numark DXM09 - $640ish new/$500ish 2nd hand
Obviously the DXM is a vastly better mixer, and has a lot more bells and whistles (and looks awesome). To be honest - I dont think thats a bad price for what you get.
But the other two are dirt, DIRT cheap (esp for a 3 channel), and I could walk into the local store and get it today. Presumably they do the same thing without the FX?
Has anybody had any of these? The cheaper two dont look as good, but are they fairly similar.
Thankyou all for your ongoing help.

I have just found the Numark DXM09 at the local DJ store for $595 which seems like a pretty good deal - I am strongly leaning towards this one - its the first one in my price range that Ive actually liked the look of.
has anybody had/got one?

I had one as my first real mixer, and I can honestly say that it was the most user friendly mixer I've used. It's the only mixer I'd recommend to someone, in the lower price bracket.
