Hey everyone,
I was just wondering what is the brand and model name/number of a decent mixer. Also, if possible, a price would be helpful.
I'm asking about a decent mixer, price ranging from approximately $500-$1000.
Thanks in advance.

Ok, here come the standard questions:

What gear are you using? A couple of turntables and/or CDJs? (ie - how many channels do you need? How many might you want in the future?)

Is this for bedroom DJing, or installation somewhere?

What will it be used for - general mixing (house/trance/wot-eva), or hip-hoppy-scratchy type stuff? (or all of the above, or none of the above?)

Ok, you'll probably think I'm an idiot, but here goes:
Me and my friend just want to connect a laptop to it for now (we will eventually set up two vinyl decks which will be used for scratching, etc). One of us will be on the laptop (using Ableton) and cuing up songs, adding effects, etc, while the other is playing around with the mixer.
I think around 2-4 channels if possible (for future use). I know nothing about this subject, so naturally, I sound like an idiot.
Thanks for reading and posting.
P.s. We hope to be playing decent sized parties, etc.

Doesn't sound idiotic at all... sounds like a recipe for fun. You'll probably find pretty quickly that two is a crowd with just Ableton and a mixer - but that'll just give you all the more motivation to add decks to the setup. :)

Top notch mixer names include Allen&Heath, Rane, Ecler, Urei.

Good names include Vestax, Denon, Numark, Tascam. And Pioneer I suppose, but I wouldn't buy one.

Sucky, avoid at all costs names include Gemini, Stanton, Behringer, American Audio.

That's a pretty simplistic list of course. Many manufacturers have entries in both the "good" and "sucky" fields.

Here are some that will suit you:

Ecler - http://www.storedj.com.au/products/product.php?id=1020
Denon - http://www.storedj.com.au/products/product.php?id=750
Numark - http://www.storedj.com.au/products/product.php?id=19

Make sure you shop around. There's a directory of DJ shops here: http://www.inthemix.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=134572

If you are in Sydney Spank Records

http://www.spankrecords.com.au/stock/djgear/djGearDetail.asp?id=24828

It has midi functionality which means whomever is using ableton can use the mixer as a control
surface + has enough channels for decks also?? For 1295 its a bargain as the sound qual is
awesome.

i don't define "decent" to be under 1k.

the cheapest good mixers are the nuo 4 for midi (nuo 3 is okay for bedroom) then you're into the Xone's and if you swing that way, the pioneer 800.
