Just wondering what sort of things dj's do at home to improve their skills. Once the basics are down pat (beatmatching, song structure) where from there?
Just mixing random songs, or try out specific mixes of a particular song into another?!
Generally what do you do when mixing at home to improve skils.

Drop track, give yourself 16 beats, bring the volume up, ride the pitch and keep the two tracks together for as long as possibile.

I just watch some other DJs on youtube, look what they doing and then try, always on the look out for new techniques, specially mixing or effect stuff...

Do you guys practice mixes at home then mix in/out of the same tracks when your playing out, at the same points (as practised?)

Not so 1:1 but you can if you want, just don't expect the punters to be enjoying the ride like you are.

I find making a mix is good practise as it really puts the pressure on you not to make a mistake. It's easy to forget a mistake if you are mucking around but if you really want to do a good job of a mix then you are really going to try hard not to make a mistake while you mix.

I use my headphone to listen to one channel when Im mixing two songs and it sounds fine (beatmatched) to me, but i always find when i hear the playback of what i recorded the mix of the two songs is out?!
should i use the room sound as a judge to what everyone is hearing?
how do you guys mix songs; which channels to which ear?!
:? thanks:?

Dude it sounds like you need some practise. If you record it, then you can see where your out. People mix all different ways, there is no formula.
What I do it listen to my monitors with one ear, and cue the other track in my headphones with my other ear. When the track is in enough to hear I get rid of the headphones and use the sound from the monitors to hear how I'm going. Pretty simple really.
which channels to which ear?!
:? thanks:?
I either do what the above post said or have both channels in both ears.. i cue the track thats going to come in first and then bring the playing channel into my headphones and hit play when required and beatmatched from that.. its a really easy way. well i find

I mix completely in my headphones 80% of the time...after doing many recordings of different ways to mix I have found I mix better in my headphones. But thats only because I spent the first months of practicing without a stereo to plug into so I didnt have a choice but to mix in them.
Its what you feel works best for you really.
Gamblore made a good point, getting a mix organised and then going to record it improves you technique no end, you can cover up a mistake when your fuckin about and you can rewind the song and start it again but that means you dont learn to mix under pressure, but when your recording you seem to conerntrate so much harder to make every mix sound perfect, it is also very very frustrating but hey getting good at something is never easy!!

it's always good to be playing to at least one person i reckon, helps you lift your game and the sort. a good way of doing this is by hooking your record-out on the mixer into your computer and then streaming via shoutcast or some-such thing. this way your mates / pretty much anyone can listen and you can get feedback blah blah blah and it's all free so won't hurt the bank and gets you used to being under a lil pressure and i also thinks it makes it a lot more interesting etc etc! :)
