Are there many other folk out there who are encountering a problem with PS2s purchased soon after they came out (~2 years ago) with Discs not being read by the thing?

Apparently this is a fairly common problem overseas, and is starting to become one here. A few people I know have them and are having the problem. I've spoken to some people I know at the ACCC (http://www.accc.gov.au) who have said that Sony aren't required to do anything about the problem outside of warranty (Sony are asking $200 to get it fixed) unless it's demonstrated to be a problem with the manufacture.

I'm starting to wonder whether it's worthwhile getting a bit of a petition together...

disc read error is most commonly caused by:

dirty disc. keep em clean and in the case. fingerprints can be the culprit.

dirty lens. check it out. dont touch it. get it cleaned if need be. also check around where the disc sits. if its very dusty, dust can be dragged across the lens by the disc and obscure the data.

scratched disc. this may or may not be a problem. if its the underside, scratch remover will do the job. if its the label side (the data layer sits under the label) then its kinda stuffed.

if none of the above points help (they're easy to overlook), then see a console doctor.
