hey, im looking at these two mixers. i'm a EDM dj but i'm kinda interested in learning to scratch.

I'm looking at importing the empath, hence it will be about the same price as the nuo3

what's peoples opinions?

the rane kicks ass. was gonna buy one until i realised i could get the xone62 for the same price. but since you wanna learn how to scratch i def wouldnt recommend the 62.
in terms of the empath, you really cant go wrong w/ the build quality.
The faders are awesome and its built like a tank!

havent touched a nuo3 before so i cant comment.

NUO 3 is great quality to with great sound? Whats warranty like if you buy from OS (should something go wrong)

entropy1
13-Sep-07, 04:06pm
umm, depending on where i buy from 6 months or no warranty, which has me a bit concered, but apparently not much goes wrong with ranes.

although, the nuo has a 3 year warranty

I mean if you buy from the states do you have to return it to the states or can you get the Aus
agent to service it?

That's a tough choice man. I personally would go with the empath, but the best thing to do would be go and get your mitts on them both, see which has the best feeling pots and faders and stuff. They will both be good for scratching AND mixing, but the Rane has a more flexible FX loop (guess thats why it's called FlexFX :P )

well it depends, if i buy Bstock then it's got a six month warranty, and ebay obviously has none, i would have to pay for postage back to the US to get repaired. it's about $100ish i think.

i'm going to go to storedj when i go to melb and try these both out (hopefully they will have both on display?), and either buy the nuo3 or decide to get the empath

the send return features on the empath are better from memory.

otherwise they're both great mixers.

I love both these mixers. I have an empath and my buddie as the nuo 3. The empath feels a lil more legit when bumpin faders around. The nuo has NICE BIG KNOBS. I'd say the empath has better sound. But it's quite more expensive. Either way you will be sittin tight imo.

hmm, i do plan on adding a kaoss pad or efx1000 in the future (or both :p). but yeah, there are the same price, sans the warranty on the rane

The Empath is more solid. P&G faders for both CH and XFADE.

Both a good choice.

Same price? Where? Last I saw the Nuo 3 was 999 and the Empath was around 1700.

There is a big difference in price!

I picked up a Nuo3 from Storedj.com.au for $850.

There is also a mob in QLD that sell them on ebay.

etc.

hmm, $850 eh? so you haggled them down abit from the $975 list price? good to know

i would also agree tht I'd prefer the EQ knobs on the nuo 3.

it's a 6 of one 1/2 doz of the other.... if you were playing more breaks, funky, mashup kind of stuff the empath would be better, if you were playing more prog house, trance I'd be heading for the nuo, depending on the nuo's XF curve arrangement, can you change it? CBF'd looking :P

the nuo3 has a pretty decent Xfade that can be changed alot, including cut in time.

i know they are both excellent mixers, just wanted peoples opinions and wondered if there was anything i should look for (like omg the xxxx doesn't work with blah blah)

Bracko
14-Sep-07, 08:23pm
you won't get that. ecler and rane are 2 of the best sound companies in the world. their mixers are well made and well positioned in the market to give DJ's the best chance of not sounding shit ;)

The other choice is the djm 700! :P

DJM800 is actually a good mixer when compared to a DJM600.

i actually don't mind using it at all.

entropy1
16-Sep-07, 06:59pm
yeah, it is much better than the DJM600, but it's completely out of my price and needs

went and had a play with them both today. I love the rane's faders, very smooth. More so than the nuo3. In my opinion the rane wins hands down vs the nuo after playing with them both. and the only downside to the rane is the stupidly tiny "transform" switches

well, i ended up importing a NEW empath from the states, costing me $1150 from audiolines.com inc shipping, loving the mixer

Bracko
11-Oct-07, 07:20pm
lettuce know what the full cost is and if you get stung by import tax.

lettuce

Bhaha lettuce, were you just down at the green groccers bracko?

entropy1
11-Oct-07, 07:41pm
that was the full cost, $1150 inc everything.

i paid:
$850USD for the mixer itself
$150USD for shipping via USPS
and $30AUD for the "wire transfer" bank fee (i didn't include this in the cost)

if you import something under $1000AUS it's free of ALL taxes if shipped via USPS (USP and fedex are classed as "shipping" rather than a "postal" service, so the threshold is only $250 for them)

with the current strong dollar it was under the $1000AUS threshold (and i got them to charge me $250 for shipping and $750 for the mixer, just in case :P)

so ALL up, delivered to my door it was $1150 + wire transfer fee (oh and $8 power cable)

can you run american electronics in aus? usually it blows up (not quite as badly as it sounds though) because we use both a different voltage an frequency to them, voltage can be changed easy but frequency cant.

entropy1

the empath is specifically designed to be used anywhere in the world without converters, it handles 100-240V, 50-60Hz

from the rane site:

"Features Important to DJs
Universal internal power supply. When traveling, finding power supply adapters is difficult. The Empath accepts 100 to 240 VAC, 50/60 Hz power, for use anywhere in the world without adapters. "

Bumpy

Mixers usually have a switch and knobs and what not that can change all that i think

Bracko
11-Oct-07, 11:17pm
you have no fucking idea, yet you feel the need to post.... why is that?

it depends on the brand. some have universal voltage (internal electronical switching) some have external switching and some need transformers.

read the specs if you're unsure.

^^ lol yeh sorry my bad.. but i just assumed.. but then again assumptions are bad as we have just found out
I was also saying that on the basis that my mixer is an old cheap mixer so i assumed that newer expensive mixers would be able to change thus as well

entropy1

well, it's a Rane so it has very good build quailty and support, the headphone monitoring and efffects loops are extremely flexible aswell (probably the best i've ever seen), the faders are also very good for scratch djs, it also has 1/4", xlr and rca outputs too

but that's just my opinion

Good mixer the empath.

Just for your info, i work at DJ Warehouse in sydney and we would have been happy to sell you the Ecler for well under the $800 mark, generally we're quite competitive with price..
If you are ever after anything else then give me a call.

09-Nov-07, 02:10pm
ecler for $800, that makes it around 1/2 the price of the Rane!

i've never used a nuo3 but i own an empath and use my mates nuo2 when i'm over there...

rane is the most flexable mixer you'll buy i rekon in terms of outputs, effects loops and cue (headphone monitoring) options. penny giles faders are butter smooth all day and the eq's and sound quality are second to none.

i should be a rane salesman! or i could be justifying the money i spent on mine... but trust me, the old girl speaks for herself.

yeah, not bad. pretty basic on the features, no pan per channel and there's something really strange with the cue. when all the cue buttons are off you can still hear the cue  I'm not sure whether mine is r00ted or not, i guess i should find out.

good sound and XLR outs. I loved the tascam, but i just want a simple mixer to do a simple task now.

it's a RANE so that shouldnt happen :P. But if i do, i have spoken to rane and i have a full warranty - but i must pay to get it back to the states. based on the current shipping rates and the current price for an empath in australia, as long as i dont have to ship it back more than once i'm still in front - although i would be without a mixer for 3 weeks (and that doesnt really bother my cos i'm a bedroom Dj)

i got the mixer for about the same price as b-stock/demo units except instead of 6 month/etc warrenty it has a full warranty
