Hey guys, I was just wondering, with the lights at a show, who is in charge of them? Does the DJ control all of that are too? Also, what kind of lights do you recommend for an 18th in a hall? Strobe, lasers, etc? I hope I'm posting in the right section. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Depends on where you go. cheaper places sometimes have beat activated lights. Bigger clubs have a VJ (a guy who does all the visuals). Your best bet for an 18th in a hall is to hire a strobe, laser and a smoke machine. SMOKE MACHINE IS A MUST!!! otherwise your laser will look like ass. I hired all that stuff for less than $50 for one night.

here's the laser:

Depends, usually for small events they're stand alone lights, such as acrobats, shimmers etc, for med events its usually a few movers controlled with a lightjockey or similar, so the DJ can just click whatever program he wants, and larger gigs usually have a dedicated operator with console.
Basic 18th in a hall I'd probably use 4 - 6 Martin Acrobats or T-Rex, 4-6 Geni Shimmers or Spyro's, a Gigastrobe and a fogger. And a laser if you really want.

I hate strobes.

I seriously HATE strobes.

Such an annoying effect.

I rate par cans on a chaser over a strobe.

But that's just me.

Pack the shit out of the hall with lasers, don't foget to pack a fresh crate of cheesy, hardcore trance and make sure everyone buys at least 4 overpriced pills off you at the door and you got yourself a cracking party.

4x PAR56
1x T Stand
1x 4-Pack

Done.

Most hire companies would have something like that as a standard package, perhaps with a couple of basic automated effects thrown in like a moonflower or thunderbird. They have built-in mics so just turn em on and they'll sort themselves out.

Yeah, stobes suck! Unless it's 140+ BPM hard techno that is!

Smoke machine, laser, mirror ball and 2 or 3 spots to target the ball is ample for a shindig like this imo.

Thanks a lot for the input guys.
So basically a laser, smoke machine and strobe will be fine.
Awesome.
How much would all of that cost from somewhere like Derringer's Music?
Also, how about a PA System? How would we hook that up, and a sub woofer, etc?
Sorry about the intensely n00b questions, but I don't have anywhere else to go.
Thanks again.

Ask Derringers, I reckon they'd be the best place to ask about their own prices ;-)
