Question... Do dj's nudge the record (if needed i.e) while the track has already been mixed in..and is playing on loud speaker? Doesn't it warp the sound?

under absolutely no circumstance should you nudge the record whilst its playing. if you dont beatmatch it perfectly then just let it go and accept that you fucked up. try harder on your next mix.

Hang on, "while the track has already been mixed in" is confusing me. If its already mixed in, why nudge, you've only got one track playing right? But if its in the mix then fuck yeah nudge that shit, we dont want to hear your train-wreck.

Sarcasm or a complete load of crap! I've seen some of the best in the world do it! Turntables wander, tracks aren't all perfect thoughout, as such, over a period of time, damn near every mix will slip somewhat...it's best to adjust it with the pitch control, over correct it, then slip it back into the groove...but yes, you can get away with nudging a record when it's in the mix DEPENDING on the type of track...something with long, high, synthy melodies you'll want to avoid touching...but without drawn out long sounds, highs, vocals etc you can nudge till your heart is content. And even the tracks with highs, you can get away with it if you pick the right time to do it.

But yeah, practice holding tracks in the mix with the pitch control only at home...lots and lots and lots...it really is the best way to mix...like drop you next track (no pre-cueing) give yourself like 16 or 32 beats and bring the volume in, ride that pitch like a $10 hooker and hold them together for as long as you can! Best done when others aren't in earshot until you get good at it.

I was amazed the first time I saw Derrick May live (having been trying to DJ for about a month)...he mixes like this everytime! 2+min long mixes, then fucks around with bass kills, EQ's, effects...comes time for the next record, gets it on the platter, drops it, then about 5-8 secs later, he brings the volume in and just works it back and forth until it's in the groove. My newbie ears couldn't hear it slipping OUT of mix and he's corrected it and re-corrected it again in that space of time! I guess that's what 20+ years of DJing gets you though!

Naah, that's crap, seriously! I think I've only ever seen one DJ in my life pre-cue a track on turntables so perfectly that it heald for a 1.5min long mix without needing adjustment.
Just watch all the good DJs, 1 ear in headphones, other ear listening to monitor, 1 hand working the mixer, 1 hand locked on the pitch control, adjusting from there.

Yeah, that's what he's meaning..."mixed in" as in you've brought the volume up, both tracks playing...and I'm with you, even if it does create a "WHHHHHIIIIIIIIIIIIRRRRRRRRR" it's better than hearing that ba-donk-a-donk-a-donk train wreck.

yes - nudge if you need to. people would rather hear a track warp slightly than hear it trainwreck while you try & ride the pitch to impress the trainspotters. if you nudge the record properly people won't even notice. use the spindle for a small, smooth nudge

Or just use CDJ's with pitch lock. Problem solved.

For best results adjust the quieter of the two (preferably the outgoing track if possible) :thumb:

if you dont nudge ur track it'll sound shit. every dj does it or just rides the pitch which i cant do so i just nudge the vinyl a bit..ive noticed on cdj's if you get them beatmatched good you dont really have to nudge it is it me or is it more accurate on a cdj than a turntable

+1

When you get it dead on, it's not uncommon for mixes to stay locked for 2-3 minutes without any adjustment.

^^^ thats the way you are suppose to cue, dead on, a touch before or after and you end up chasing beats all day, i say practice cueing all day and mixing is a whole lot easier.

as soon as one plate starts to drift just backspin and shout "REWINDDDD" and make circular motions with your fist/finger. works every time

Yeah i'm with you man ... just fucking beatmatch it and mix it, if it drifts, correct it =P

it's best to adjust it with the pitch control, over correct it, then slip it back into the groove

I've always wondered about this when using technics will it speed up quicker if you over shoot it or if you know how much pitch it will need do you just nudge it to there.
