View Full Version : Mixer purchase help

So basically I will be purchasing my setup sometime this week or the next. I'll start off with the basics: My budget is $1500. I use vinyl, play hard trance & hardstyle, and I already have headphones.
After having chats with the dudes at StoreDJ and also other mates who DJ, as well as testing out various turntables I decided on the Stanton ST150 (price $649 each, $1298 total).
So this leaves me with a choice on what mixer to buy (which is limited by a price range of up to $200). The stickied threads haven't really helped me that much, so I'm asking for your guys opinions.
My price range of $200 leaves the following mixers eligible:
Numark DM1002MK2 $199.00
Outputs: Master RCA
Channels: 2
EQ's: 3 band
Inputs: 2-4 line switchable, 2 phono, 1 mic
Numark DM1050 $169.00
Outputs: Master, record
Channels: 2
EQ's: 3 Band
Inputs: 2-4 line switchable, 2 phono, 1 mic
Numark DM2050 $189.00
Outputs: Record and Master
Channels: 3
EQ's: 3 Band
Inputs: 4-6 line switchable, 2 phono, 1 mic
Basically at this point I'm leaning towards the Numark DM2050, purely because it has 3 inputs and I may expand and get a single CDJ some time in the future. That said, 3 channels is not a specific requirement, as the CDJ purchase will be a long time in the future.
Apart from the DM2050 having 3 channels, the only differences I can tell between the 1050 and the 1002MK2 is that the 1002MK2 has kill switches on the EQs, but lacks a Record output (which I would like to have.) Unfortunately Numark haven't got tech specs on their websites for any of these mixers so I'm unsure about any other differences.
What are your opinions on these 3 mixers? I am interested to know your views as all have their pro's and cons and I am unsure which one to get. Any help would be appreciated.
I'd say the 2050, there's way arounds the lacking record out (RCA splitters etc) but I owned the Mk1 and it was crap (they may have improved on this)
if you can, you can, try and hunt around for a 2nd hand djm300, might be able to get one for $300 or so :)

Get 2 second hand 1200's for around a grand, then you can buy a pretty good second hand mixer!

Fair enough.
2. why would i buy second hand instead of new
1. They are the industry standard, (they perform well and youll play on them if you play out)
2. Spending less on decks leaves more for a mixer.
3. They hold thier value better for when you quit.
3. gl trying to find some second hand 1200s in the next 2 weeks
Not sure on your location, but as an example:

i'm with these guys... I'm not gonna try and talk you out of Stanton decks but I do reckon you're better off going with a second hand pair of Technics...

haha i wont be quitting i can assure u. ive been playing around at mates places for a while now and definitely enjoy it immensely... ive also managed to get a decent vinyl collection going so i wont be playing the same tracks over and over hahhaa
ill probably contact that dude about the 1200s... however im a bit wary of dodgy sellers.
failing that im happy with st150s...
anyways dudes i would like your opinions on the mixers, incase i do end up getting the st150s

If you are worried about dodgy sellers go to youtube and that johnothan dude who does all the tutorials has a video on what to look for when it comes to buying second hand technics TT's. It stoped me buying them on 3 different occasions because of various reasons.
I would recommend second hand, I bought new, spent a shit load of money, now I want to upgrade (does it ever stop though...!!) Plus you can never ever discount the importance of a good mixer, my mixer I use at the moment has slight bleeding when cueing and it is one of the most annoying things in the world. Get a decent mixer and the second hand technics, very much worth it.

ST150s are great, Good choice.
Stay clear of numark mixers, the quality of their products are going down hill.

Dear Kasper, a very awesome member of the ITM forums recently sold me my 2 x 1200s + 2x speakers, along with all necessary carts, carry cases etc, for $1500, in very good nic.
There's nearly always 1200s for sale, so don't rule the option out! ;)
stanton ST150 are fine... solid, well made decks with more features... buy em :)
and the numark are still one of the best value mixers around, try to go for a DXM06 tho

The pitch sliders on the ST150's are craptacular.

well okay lets say hypothetically i get those 1200s for 1100. that leaves 400 for a mixer...
i could then buy something like the vestax vmc002xl, or perhaps a dxm06
what are your thoughts on this, particularly compared to those numark mixers listed previously?

Dude, the ST150s are pretty solid. But I honestly think you should consider getting a better mixer. It will definitely speed up your learning curve. And with a shitty mixer, you bound to upgrade in no time. So why not wait till you have the stash before making the purchases. It will definitely save you alot in the future and better still, you will definitely love them.
And IMO, dxm06 is alright provided you dont intend to scratch. They are pretty popular and you should be able to get them 2nd hand cheap.
Cheers.

ive got a vmc004fx which is just a 4ch 002xl with effects, personally i've you only need 2ch i think the dxm06 is a better buy.
the vestax is pretty sweet, except the knobs are stiff and hard to use when sweaty (ie fingers not sweaty know ;-0)

If your really not keen on getting Technics TTs instead of Stanton go for the American Audio HTD45. They are exactly the same as the ST150 but rebranded plus they're about $100 cheaper each (less for cash). Then you have $400+ for a decent mixer. Vestax are pretty good in this price range.

Out of the box, true, but throw in a Numark CP-Pro fader and it's a scratch demon. The only weakness is lack of FX sends for outboard FX or a 3rd channel, but for the price it's excellent.
