View Full Version : can you hear your mix live as your record it onto an MD player?
got the dj setup working great, learnt to beat-match, now want to record some mixes so I can hear if they sound any good.
Firstly, dont have a computer anywhere near my decks so I cant record it that way. looking at buying a cheap MD player (around $150 on ebay). Ive already read the threads on MD players and the good and bad about them but I think its the best way to go.
I want to still hear my mix through my speakers while I record so I can make sure its all going okay- does the MD player just go in between your mixer and stereo/amp/speakers?
Would the output cord of your mixer go into the input/microphone jack of the MD, then run a cord from the headphones jack of the MD into the input/aux jack of my stereo?
any better cheap ways to record a mix that DOESNT involve having your computer next to you?
thanks

The iKey works nicely ... i'm getting mine sometime in the next few days, made purley to record from a mixer.
Your Mixer should have a Record jack in the back that you shove and AV - MIX/Headphone cord from the back of your mixer into the MD player ... your speakers run off output which is completley dfiferent to the record jack so it should not affect your speakers playing the output of the mixer in any way
or
just look up the iKey, cost you a hundred bucks or some shit from eBay and it'll save you a world of pain

Second the iKey, looks good and super protable.
Tingles pretty much summed it up. Run your speakers from the main output and run the recording from the recording out. Easy!
You could consider taping your mixes on a cassette? Chairman did it on his last mix and it gave the mix some more character.

Hooray! i'm not stoopid!
cheers for that. Ive just checked the specs of my mixer and it does have a separate record output line. God bless my trusty Numark DXM09.
Giddy up guys! Talk about an impulse purchase! Just bought a new iKey for $AU75!!!

the iKey looks lightweight n plasticy ..you might want to buy some rechargeable batteries considering it takes four of them. my MD takes one :P
there's quite a swag of other features that makes the MD a superior choice for me personally
i'd wager that $75 that my MD will outlast the iKey as well :ahoy:

if you do go the MD route, minidisc.com.au have a basic one for about $100
if use one and have no issues at all, except for the trainwrecks sound 10 x worse on the walk to work

What's an iKey?
Anywho...you can have my minidisc player, with 10 disc, for $50 - works fine, just has to be sticky taped shut as the latch is bung.

...The newish sony HiMD MZRH1 (cost - $469 at minidisc.com.au) have Mp3 capabilities. This Md will out last any iKey. I got the model before it and it sucks when you have to convert files.

Yeah, minidisc isn't the best...time consuming and your lose quality with the transfering to PC.
Exactly how far from your decks is your PC, bj? They make some looooooooooooong cables nowdays. Failing that, move PC to decks, plug in, record, move it back. Better than wasting money one some secondary device you don't really need.

i have a slightly older model ... and it's simply a case of plugging the USB cable in ... opening the Sonic Stage software ... and dragging the tracks off the MD into my library ... you choose what format it drops them into your library as ... MP3, wav or ATRAC
MD also doubles as a regular USB device where you can drag n drop any files
as for sound quality .. i'm pretty pedantic about compressed sound ... but all mixes i've taken from my MD have sounded just dandy

OK, that one owns! Mine is old and you have to just play the disc while recording on PC with Audacity or other.

That's what an iKey is but designed specifically for recording DJ sets, songs, etc.

How can I drop them to my library as MP3 when I record in PCM mode???? The 1gb Discs are perfect for about an 80 min mix in PCM mode (not compressed). They sell them at Sony DFO for $4.

i wouldnt even bother with PCM mode to be honest ... may as well give yourself more time ... considering most mixes get rendered to an MP3 anyway ...
the transferring is simple .. you just use the Sonic Stage software and specify the file format in which it puts the tracks into your library. it gives you the option to convert or transfer "as is"

True, if it's just for listening why not cassette? Ha that's how i used to hand out my demos back in the day anyway.

You might want to explain to me then how I get no quality loss on my MD Deck when I have it connected from the optical out of it to the optical input of my sound card??
'cause you've got a proper one.
Proper povvo DJ stylz call for a portable MD, probably set to LP2 or LP4, plugged into the PC's on board line-in with the cheapest 3.5mm lead you can get from Jaycar.

Even better. Actually, I think my first one was made from two old headphone plugs, wires twisted and taped together. I want it working NOW!
