Lotsa disco, not enough funk and soul methinks. ;)
So with modern/nu funk stuff coming out at a rapid rate with its nod to the past but with modern production techniques in place, whats rocking yer socks off?
I been digging stuff on Freestyle, Jalapeno, Ubiquity, Tru Thoughts and Pulver.
Been having a laugh at Shawn Lee's Ping Pong Orchestra and also digging Black Market Audio.
Mark Ronson has put some ace stuff out lately. His re-do of Radiohead's "Just" is a corker!
Also been getting into Lack of Afro, The Snugs amd Cookin On 3 Burners.
i really enjoyed beatconductor's marakech which came out on GAMM a couple months ago.
been picking up a few jazzman reissues but haven't bought much new funk material lately. any particular suggestions will be very much appreciated :)

Couldn't agree more Spitch, threads about soul and funk get no love in this forum.
There's some good stuff on the Nicole Willis and The Soul Investigator's remix album. That girl has a phenomenal voice.

Record of the week on Piccadilly is by Sheffield band Bare Knuckle Soul... worth checking. Especially the self-titled track for some slowed down soul almost R 'n' B sounds. Nice.

A couple more I have been keen on (although may have been sleeping on these...) more on a jazz funk tip the Tugg edit of Soil and Pimp Sessions is pretty hot, also the Ella Hamilton track on the Keb Darge - P and P release. Cracking!

Seadog - Maceo is also doing a sideshow at the Basement Sunday 16 March.

Recent purchases for me on the funk tip that I recommend :
* Marva Whitney with Osaka Monaurail - I Am What I Am (Freestyle)
The grooves here are incredible - guitars vamping on top of funky drums, underneath tight horns that glide wonderfully with Marva's legendary vocals. A few great original tunes that stand beautifully next to her classics -- and titles include "I Am What I Am (parts 1 & 2)", "Let A Sister Come In & Wrapp Things Up (part 3)", "Give It Up Or Turnit A Loose (parts 1 & 2)", "We Sing Soul", "Every Little Bit Hurts", and "Soulsisters Of The World Unite".
* Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings - 100 Days and Nights (Daptone)
Excellent 3rd album, with plenty of slower and more soulful tracks evident. Still killer but with more depth - reminding me a lot of latter period Etta James when she was working Muscles Shoals style.
And obviously you must get tix to Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings show at the Enmore on 12 March, with J Rocc of the World Famous Beat Junkies, Meem Live and Simon Caldwell in support !
http://www.enmoretheatre.com.au/events/2008/03/12/sharon-jones-the-dap-kings
* Lefties Soul Connection have a new album out called 'Skimming the Skum' haven't heard yet but keen to check..
* Ramon Morris - Sweet Sister Funk (Groove Merchant, re-issue on album & cd)
An oldie but a goodie from 1973. Ramon plays a dynamite tenor sax, and a tight combo featuring electric piano and Cecil Bridgewater on trumpet deliver a jazz/funk album that is an absolute gem !

I have Lefties on cd and can vouch for its worth. I have a review of it laying about somewhere...

Katalyst feat Steve Spacek - How 'bout us
Not only does it feature one of my favourite nu-soul voalists, Spacek, but the hook provided by the Australian lads is heavy. Destined to be track of the year for me I think.
Also check out the Haggis Horns - Hot Damn!
Fantastic UK funk outfit. Here is a little documentary about the boys which is actually quite well made.

What a clip from Big Eddie - funniest thing I've seen in ages
Ball bustingly brilliant set by Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings last night playing to either a sold out - or close to it - crowd at the Enmore Theatre, with 2 hours of non stop funk/soul grooves and energy
Also Mr Choc from World Famous Beat Junkies in support worked up a sweat - cutting and scratching his way through plenty of classic tracks (Knucklehead by Grover Washington Jr, Risin' to the Top by Keni Burke, lots of James Brown, etc )
Bring on Maceo 8)

Spitchen love your work keeping everyone thinking on the right track - funk of course.
New here, but dead keen on funk in all forms. You guys have it sussed with mention of Alice Russell and locals (to Melb) the Bamboos on Tru Thoughts. No doubt you've also heard of the Quantic Soul Orchestra who reside on this label and whom Alice has collaborated / toured with. Also worth checking out is the James Taylor Quartet (JTQ) for full hammond driven funk.
I'm not here to plug it but thought you might be interested - I'm a sax player for the Imaginary Funk Collective and just started another thread in this forum:
http://www.inthemix.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=222139
We have some of our original material up there on myspace: /imaginaryfunkcollective so check it out. Our influences are set concretely in funk and northern soul. Oh, and 'Marc Us' whilst we haven't recorded it yet, we do cover a patchworks version of Spooky.
Also, check out Victor Wooten's live album - mind blowing bass player with some good funky stuff on there.
Charles Earland, love this jam

yes they do, also under their sister label which is more hip hop called Zebra Traffic. Have been to many of them! I have a few mates on Tru Thoughts. Another Brighton label to really keep an eye out on (or ears would be better!) is http://www.cookshopmusic.co.uk
Other people I would recommend is anything that Malcom Catto touches - such as Heliocentrics and Connie Price and The Keystones. Also highly recommend Poets of Rhythm, Sharon Jones, The Whitefield Brothers, The Apples, The Dynamics - man, so much good stuff around these days!!

Music is my Sanctuary is great - nice pick Freshie :thumb:
Recently picked up and have been greatly digging the 'Free Your Mind - the 700 West Sessions' by Amnesty which came out last year on Now-Again Records which is a Stones Throw off-shoot specialising in re-issues that is overseen by Egon.
Would classify this release as 'essential' for funk fans who like Sly and The Family Stone, Chocolate Milk, The Meters, etc.
