View Full Version : How long will you DJ for?
Carl cox and kevin saunderson are well into their 40's, what age would you stop, given that you were able to continually pick up work? , who is the oldest DJ now?

If I could I'd DJ for as long as I could but I'm pretty sure it's not going to be a good look being a 40+ yr old female behind the decks .... the boys can get away with it but unfortunately for us girls I don't think that's really an option without it maybe turning a few heads?

not really much of a DJ myself.. just do it for fun, but one of the oldest DJs would have to be DJ Krush I think.. he's got to be well into his fifties...

From a quick google search, I figured Nick Siano has to be around 53, that's not bad!

ah, i was under the impression he was quite a lot older.. 45 is the conscensus though.. huh.. i always assumed older for some reason.
I reckon I'd try to stay with it as long as I can, even if i couldnt find work and i still really enjoyed it i would just do it in my house..

He has nearly got to take the cake.
I was thinking maybe:
Frankie Knuckles — Date of Birth: January 18, 1955
OR
Grandmaster Flash but couldn't findout how old he is

If it wasn't for the AIDS epidemic of the 80s in NYC there would be many more around the age of Frankie and Mancuso.
Francois K is another one in his mid 50s

I only started getting passionate about underground house music about 4 years ago, first gig 1 year ago.. I'm turning 34 in a month. Age is unimportant in terms of musical passion
wow some pleasant surprises in this thread...
i think the 'older' chaps who are still at it or fairly new to it are an inspiration, they are to me anyway!

Im 24, and only really got into DJing about a year ago. Been listening to house alot before then but nothing like I am today.
Age isn't really a barrier.
where's the option for 6 months after you started :(

yes .. they have a place in DJ culture too ... that's the type of DJ i scored my decks from :)
most DJ's I've met over the years have given up before 30 - why is there no option for that?
I'll give up when I have to i guess. If the gigs ran dry I'd end up spending my time writing music than DJing at home to my cat. Who knows though?

I'd hazard a guess to say he probably was too...lol worthy on both accounts though :)
I've just starting bedroom banging, with no hope of playing a gig for at least a few months yet until my skill improves, and I'm 23 now.
Hope I can be successful at it and play for years and years, would be seriously shit to still have the enthusiasm but feel too old to play. I guess that is why all the big guns still play - if people are still paying who the hell is going to stop?

Thread needs to define DJ'ing.
If you mean standing behind a console in a club at 4am every weekend then I'm already out, but I'll be damned if I'm giving up my decks, I'll be 'DJing' in the retirement village rumpus room when I'm 80!

Hell yeah! I'm already planning a over 50's Schranz event, booking DJ RUsh as i type.
Keep going as long as you can --- but it can be VERY VERY tradgic seeing older Djs behind the decks sometimes...... just let it go you've had yoru turn in the sun. But i guess as long as the dance floor is pumping who really gives a sh*t.
