I was just wondering the other day how one goes about getting on labels promotional list. Do they approach you and say "you're cool, here's some new shit thats coming out in a few weeks" and push it on you. Or do you go to them and say "I'm fully sick, I spin records which are sometimes yours, I would spin them more often if you gave them to me for free because I'm rad" ?

Well adding to the initial question - who on here gets free tunes for promotional purposes. (Or is that supposed to be kept hush hush / like asking how much money you make)

haha sorry for the smartass comments!
Most people who are on promo lists were approached by the label for being either infuential in the industry, on other promo lists or ARIA chart DJs etc... Nothing is stopping you approching them and pleading your case but you probably won't get far unless you are one of the above.
Nothing is free, you do have to be useful for the label otherwise they'll drop you straight up. They don't make money by just giving people free stuff!

Yeh you have to constructively critique each track, test run it at an appropriate gig/s to gauge crowd response, etc etc.. it's not as easy as just getting the CD/record in the mail and plonking it into your wallet
I get my free tracks from share websites..
not really.

I'm on one... but that label hasn't been very active (but is relaunching apparently)
a mate of mine also recently got an email from a house/electro label with an offer...
Think it fell through but also got offered to review trance ch00ns for a small EDM website/enewsletter similar to ITM which would've involved free ch00ns...
you could try offering to write CD reveiws for a mag or street zine, they'll send CDs for review but ull get loads of crap ones 2 :0

I approached an Australian label but since I am not really playing in clubs in OZ it fell thru I suppose, they said the list was full...from what I have seen, in my case I don't really need promos anyway, there is so much music outhere it's not funny...the only reason I try to get on that Australian label list, was beacause tune was not available for sale (I think it has been released now)...never mind.
What you can do on the other hand is get onto promo services...but you have to pay for CD and posting...the thing is like mentionned before in the thread, there is a lot of crap...you end up with 1-2 decents tune per CD, so it's expensive
Personally, nothing beat just going to site and buy your own stuff...
I suppose if you are a top dj you get plenty of stuff, but then again you have to filter...and I suspect they would throw away most of the stuff anyway...

It can work out in your favour as well... if it's a label you trust (like Anjunabeats for me (mind you I don't trust them as much as I did 12 months ago), means I don't have to hunt down that record, will arrive straight in my mailbox...
buy serato and then sign up to whitelabel.net. Free tracks...

It needs to be worth a labels/promo companys time to send you tracks so to get on the list you need to be a busy working dj or an established producer. You could also be someone who writes reviews for a well known publication or website. You also need to provide constructive feedback and be someone that would actually play or listen the style of music they're sending you.
I've never paid for promos but if you dont qualify then it could be a good way of getting cheap upfront tunes.
Was just wondering.. are you allowed to play promos out in Clubs, bars, etc, etc..?

I'm on a few labels promo distribution list and yes, you are supposed to supply feedback to them. Some of the larger companies don't expect feedback but the smaller labels generally do.
Out of every ten tracks received, about two are playable! Fortunately I know a few producers who I've supported for many years that keep me bang up to date with the fresh stuff.
