Hi everyone,
I often hear people talking about transitioning between trcks, especially when the tracks are quite different tempos.
I have a djm-600 and I have mucked about with the echo effect to transition, but it dosent sound quite right.
What is the best way to do this? what do I set the echo settings to? and what channel master or the tracks channel? what do i do with the faders?
thanks in advance!

Hey mate,
The echo effect on the 600 isn't all that intuitive for doing what you are after because when you reduce the fader the effect volume is also reduced. One the best ways to do it that I've found is to use the phono/line switch. Set up the echo to what you desire (1, 2 or 4 beats) and as you introduce the effect during the transition throw the switch.
This obviously will only work if you have nothing on the opposite phono/line channel.
Hope this helps
you need a reverb effect (preferably and echo)
at least that's what i use.

thanks for the advice ;)
any other techiniques for swapping between quite different bpms??
Is echoing out what Axwell uses to mix between a lot of his tracks? Is it really hard because he seems to echo them in and out perfectly in time........

just tried the echo while throwing phono/line switch, much better!!

i found that with echo on 1/3 or 1/4 (with just over half wet) on a djm800 i was able to build up a track that was much slower than the first track (still in time though) and then just before the drop i echo out the first track and whip the low on the second track to bang it in.
if you can understand what im trying to say it works well because you bring in the other track (still nudged if needs be) and echo out the old track in quick succession.

I love this trick, but do it a little differently.

yeah, if you get it on time you can really smash out some wicked transitions. I had it going on several tracks last night in the mix and i was still able to echo back in and out multiple times with it sounding unreal.
I dunno if you could reproduce this on a djm600 because i hardly ever play on one but im sure someone can tell you if the same sought of trick will work or not.

I assign the echo to the crossfader so you can cut in and out and hear it echo out

If mixing between two tracks where one just smashes in:
Over the last 4 bars before the next track drops gradullay turn the bass down on the track mixing out of while upping the echo depth. When you've built a wall of noise, switch off the echo and slam in the bass of the next tune.
If you'refeeling adeventurous you can then drop the channel fader on the track you're mixing in to and turn on the echo at the end of a few bars now and then to quickly echo out the track you brought in, leaving the previous one going and then flick fader back up and turn off echo. All the while gradually fade the previous track out. Hope that makes sense :thumb:

I don't assign the effects to individual channels at all - by assigning the FX to the X-Fader, and assigning the channels to either left or right, you can then use the channel fader to cut and the delay with ring out when you do. Add to that, in a dark club it's MUCH easier to just have to flick the FX assign knob to 2 consecutive positions instead of finding the channel you're after.

Is this only possible on the Djm 600 or would i be able to do this using my KP3?
... And has anyone got any audio of this happening so i know what ya'll are talking aboot?

yeah i've heard that done lots before. It's an awesome transition and also a great way to create buildups. If only i had a DJM800 or similar to try it out with :( ahhh one can only dream

Set the echo of the outgoing track to the tempo of the incoming track if changing tempo, turn the wet/dry up to full and then cut in the effect with the x-fader, stop the outgoing track and start the new track at the same time so that the echo out and new beat are in time. This is really only for when the tracks have really different bpms and the sounds feel right together but it can sound awesome,

hey pro tool, i'm not sure what you mean man, is that like assigning fx to the master and then fading the channels while echo is still wet? will have to give it a shot next time on a DJM600.
you can also get a cool effect (although usually not in time so beware) by setting on 1/4 or 1/2 or whatever, and letting that echo, then cut the music with the gain knob and quickly change the effect to 2/1 or 4/1. if you screw around with the knob that changes the time you'll also end up with a cool time shift effect like an aphex twin kinda thing.
you can add more music by upping the gain in and out and keep changing the time for extra wackness.
thanks for the advice ;)

One of my fave DJ's Joachim Garraud is epic at tempo change stuff... I saw him at Future last year and he slowed a house track down and brought a hip hop track in at the same time while slowing that down too....friggen unreal and so precise, slowing two cdjs down at the same time while they are both live and beatmatching it perfectly....
He also used the basskick of one track and the snare/hi-hits of another track and was hitting Cue on the cdj and playing them like drums...pretty epic...then he dropped in technologic and kept playing the 'drums' underneath, then dropped frederico franchi - cream. was some pretty fresh and inventive transition skills witnessed there...

you can also cut it using the knob which selects the channel (line/phono), that way you dont muck up the gain.
