haha, yeah tell me about it! Doesnt matter how good you are, its always about who you know.
I hate going to clubs and hearing average dj's getting a great opportunity.
You dj at any clubs ruthykins?
I started out in a couple of DJ comps...
Keep an eye out for open decks nights as well... and if you know any small time promoters, nail 'em for CDs...
and do a search, it's been covered before...

Right... do up demo mixes and hand 'em out...
and search this forum... this topic usually comes up every month or two... the answer doesn't change

yeah Ive handed out flawless demo's to about 20 bar and club managers in the last 2-3 months but no calls! Most of them tell me the same shit... "the owner(s) go through entertainment companies" and they can never tell me which one's.
Cheers for the advice Plan B

but you got to keep it on the downlow, you gotta treat each dick as if its the only dick your sucking

Sad but true, eh?
Soooooooooooo many good locals too, and crews which are hard as hell to break into.
My advise would be to book a club and put on your own party with you warming up for a top gun local DJ who draws a crowd.

honestly if your demo is good and i mean kick ass and you know your target audience u will get a gig somewhere.
Personally i don't have time to dj at clubs but what i do do is make mix ups all the time and give them to my friends who work at bars and clubs around the place. Usually what happens is if my friends like what they hear they show their boss who is usually the owner of the bar or club or whatever and they have a listen. Then they might put the cd on while their setting up their bar or whatever. If they like the cd (which usually they do :D ) they ask my mate to ask me if i wanna come down for a mix one day/night. It's at this stage that i say thanks but no thanks i gotta work and make some real money :)
Also i put on parties and when i do i make sure i invite friends who mix to come mix up a set and when they put on parties they ask me. And get involved with your friends parties and help out with anything.
So that's just my couple of stories. There's really a shit load of ways to get into it :)

No my husband is a DJ (not being bias) but he is a fucking excellent one at that. He's supported a lot of big acts and what not but I see just how hard it is for him to get a break in Bris.
I know so many fucking sub-par DJs who are getting pretty good spots because they are mates with a promoter.

You're better off targeting small local crews who put on events/nights in those clubs...
My first gigs in Brisbane were through a small party crew in Brisbane... Going in to rekkid stores and chatting to staff can pay off as well...
I got started in Brisbane by posting in the "What tracks are you loving right now?" forum in the Trance forum... some guy (now a really close mate) who was reading it saw we had similar tastes and added me to msn, and put me on at his local night...

It's all good an easy to hand out advice on matters like this - Get to know the promoter give them CD's etc but there are a couple of problems with this.
1) I am mates with a promoter of 4 major venues in Bris - but being mates I don't want to push the friendship by giving him demo's and every week and asking to get spots in his clubs.
2) It can also be quite hard sometimes to get to know the promoters, they don't walk around wearing a uniform saying "promoter" on the back. And if you go around asking, you tend to look like a tool.
Open decks nights are a great way to meet promoters and get in there to show off your skills. And running your own night sounds awesome, I've never tried it, but it could be a great way to do what you love and make some money along the way. There is a slight element of risk though that you won't get the numbers though. Especially if you charge a cover.

Find a party you like, go and support it. If you can dj half decent - you will get a spot.
Be patient.
Don't be trying to get gigs at clubs you shouldn't be playing at. ie Don't get a gig at Onelove if your a Hip Hop dj. Don't be pushing your electro cheese to the promoter of an underground house party.
Find you niche and stay true. Don't be playing trance, house, electro, breaks and dnb just to try and 'dj'.
Dj because you love the music, not because you wanna be a dj.

I reckon!
Weird story with the tunes I play, I was strictly Electro house for about 3-4 years and in the last 6-12 months all I play is tech-house and prog and maybe a bit of minimal depending on what kind of reaction im getting from parties I play at.
I dont really find myself just playing one genre anymore, 4-5 years ago you could always tell the difference between house, electro, tech and prog. Lately most tunes have a snippet of everything!

Unlucky! The biggest bitch for me was the CDJ's pitch slider that would drop .05 or so randomly and sometimes in the mix. So i'd be constantly looking between the CDJ's to mke sure none of them had moved.
How did the tunie fuck up on you?
I think they could do with some new equipment all round, although I've heard there is a DJM800, I was playing on a 600 that was missing more caps / pots then it had on it.
But I do love the big booth and the couches in it for all ya ho's... haha
I'm assuming Open Decks is just when there are no set DJ's and you can just rock up and play? or what is it?
littlebrains69
10-Jan-08, 11:47pm
^^Yeah - but a little more organised than just rocking up with tunes. You usually email the promoter and they'll give you a slot (usually 45mins - 1hr) and you don't get paid for it. There's usually no music policy and you just play what you want. They usually try to organise the night so it has some sort of flow so you don't go from chicago house strait into 300bpm drum and bass. The good promoters try to get some progression.

Every now and then when your out you'll see a flyer. I know in Bris theres Sundays at Mass nightclub and Thursdays at the Step Inn. But can't help you down in Vic. Try going into your local thread and asking around there. Shouldn't be too hard to find one, and its a great way to get out there.

Same sort've deal... You'd move the pitch to around 6%, cause it wouldn't move off 0% no matter where u moved it... then it'd go all the way up to +6%
Yeah played on the DJM800 there once or twice...

no!!
i've just bought all these hot electro haus tunes off beatport and want to be a dj NOW!!!!
but i digress
I actually quoted this because it is the most important factor in getting into the scene as a DJ.
As pointed out ad nauseam, it's about knowing people.
It's a lot of back slapping and cock sucking no doubt!
and then it becomes a bad case of cronyism and more back slapping and constantly putting your mates on the bill.
In Brisbane there used to be a fantastic event call Spin n Jam. It wasn't at a club or a bar ... it was up the back of a church hall on friday nights ... drugs n alcohol free ... just cos of the venue, not the promoters. This was a night where producers and DJs got to do there thing and it was a gold coin donation on the door.
So what you say? Well it was here that the networking happened ... i met a few people there who have gone on to be major parts of the scene here and some are now in melbourne .... Fr1day, Shards, Nate B, DJ Cam for starters. It was like a breeding/nurturing ground for the scene.
Each of those people i've listed and myself all went on to promote our own parties as well as playing at each others ... but by no means did we (or still do) rely on each other for gigs.
for a tree to grow it needs some roots ... some trees have stronger roots than others.
think about where you want to take root ... go from there.
oh ... and get on your knees !!!

doing an open decks night would be a fun thing to do, have a bunch of guys playing an hour each.

at my party i just had the top level, which only had a $1500 tab which we easily got through, but they didnt have any decent turntables etc so we brought our own set up etc. The PA on the top isnt great either.
The other two levels are a lot better suited to a "club" night, and when you think about it $2500 between 100 people is just $25 spend each. So if we have enough different groups of people shoudl be able to make it. Could always charge $5 cover or something.

Just thought I might share my weekend experience.
To give you some background, I used to do regular gigs in a few clubs around town but toned it right down for a few reasons.
Now days I only do 1 or 2 gigs a month.
Anyways, I was playing on the weekend and had the usual random clowns in the booth. I turned to get a new track and my mate goes to me 'you are in a loop'. I didnt understand what he meant but as I am looking I can hear the same 4 bars of the breakdown repeating.
I turn around to find the CDJ in a loop. I was pretty pissed but I knew I didnt create the loop myself. So I am kinda puzzled as to how it was engaged?
So I continue on and out of the corner of my eye, I see this clown next to me about to set another loop on the far CDJ. I grab his wrist with a fair bit of feeling and ask 'what the fuck do you think you are doing?'.
He turns to me and says casually 'I play here all the time mate, I know what I am doing'. Then he just stood there as if it was just a misunderstanding on my behalf and now that he has cleared it up, its Ok to continue to touch whatever he liked. Instead, I replied with a 'what the fuck do I care? You dont ever touch anything whilst I am playing. I would never come whilst you are mid set and touch anything'.
He then walked off confused as to why I was so angry.
He later appeared saying 'look, I play here all the time. I didnt think it was a big issue' I said again 'I dont fucken care if you play here, you never touch anything whilst I am playing!' he was like 'Fine. Alright, I said sorry so thats it'.
I told the DJ who followed me about the incident and warned him. He couldnt believe it and said 'I doesnt matter if you play here all the time, its about respect' which were my thoughts exactly.

Shyboy you should go back in a week while his playing and start putting the CDJ's on revers or just hit the cue button while his playing and when he turns around to see what happend say I played here last week, I know what im doing.

ShyBoy that is fucked.
My partner was DJing one night when a guy (one of those jerk-offs that are employed to stand on the corner and hand out free entry cards to passers by) came into the booth and said "You need to play blah blah blah... you should be playing songs at ***BMP"
Chris ignored him as he's the DJ and knows what he is doing... then 3 people left the club and this d!ck had the audacity to turn to Chris and say
"See, they left because of you!"
The next day that cvnt was fired
I wish DJ applications for clubs were more open to the general public and based on skill and experience rather than word of mouth!

I told the DJ who followed me about the incident and warned him. He couldnt believe it and said 'I doesnt matter if you play here all the time, its about respect' which were my thoughts exactly.
F*ken twat...I would have punched him in the dick....X(

I first started mixing five years back...I moved in with a good friend of mine who was also learning to mix. He had just brought two 1200s and DJM600...So we started learning off some mates of ours who were already esablished DJs. From there we hit the record stores...and started abuying a ton of tunes...We were given alot to as alot of our mates were buying CDJs and simply giving there collection away or selling it to us at mates rates...it also helped that we were good friends with some record shop owners/assistants that sold records below retail pricing for us and would import pretty much anything we wanted(it's totally who know)...
After about five months bashing'n kicking our hands and feet against the wall mixing in bedroom. We started recording our sets. This is where I really started putting it all togeather and picking some of more technical side to DJing(EQing, using effects...blah..blah...blah)
We then started playing at some after partys. Met some of the right people....handed out some demo's...and before we knew it we're doing back to back warm up sets for some big players visiting in town....
At the time I was also drummer for a local Dn'b/breakbeat band and juggling both at the same time...
I would grab my sticks and drum kit...go do the live gig...leave the lads to pack my drums up...race to the car and motor it into town(sometimes we played out of town)while slurping down a couple of red bulls and munching down a MD burger or a piece of KFCs finest...grab my tunes and head into the clubs for some wild partys my flatmate and me were playing at...then head to an after party for some more mad mixing and grove it till the sun went down again...get about five hours sleep in and then do the 'grumpy zombie' thing on a Monday at our day jobs...lol
F*k we lived for the weekends...
About a two and half years later of playing out I decided to see what else had the world had to offer and headed over to the States and Europe for six months of partying and getting loose...At that stage I had already brought my own CDJs and mixer. but still had and mixed a ton of vinyl...
But that's another story...and I've already bored you guys'n gals enough...;)

i'm into mostly house/prog/tech/deep/electro, most of my mates play the generic stuff thats floating around.
to be honest didnt play with the audio set up at the burdekin as was too drunk
theres a couple of open deck / noobs nights, on at phonix & one at eliz hotel in the cbd.
we're thinking about another on at the burdekin, ill prob see if theres some interest fromt he forum so we get a few different groups of people to cover the cost
You still thinking of this mate? Just had a look and it looks like a nice spot, never been but looks quite cool.
Any plans for the night?

THe easiest way to start DJing is promoting parties yourself...
Go to a club that nobody goes to, that seriously needs help, and talk to the manager or owner about doing an event there, down in Florida u dont even need to rent it , if u do well on the talking u get helped with the advertisement costs, get 100% of the entrance, and sometimes even a percentage of the bar sales...
Get a bunch of hot groupies to pass out the flyers, put posters in strategic places a month b4 the event... And play your best!!
There you go ... no need to be sucking dicks... do that until u make a name for yourself!
Create your own opportunities!
