so there is 2 of us, do you combine how many years of mixing between the 2 of us, vs the other guy. or seperately who has been mixing longer or do you have a mix off...

Ummm.... You could of course complicate things like that. I'm sure if you tried hard enough you could probably incorporate a Miss World style pageant contest in there somewhere too. Perhaps some kind of rock-paper-scissors variant and if you're really feeling particularly combative a good old fashioned best of 3 SFII playoff. Race each other round the block once or twice and then just give up, become a 3 piece and fall in a pile of unadulterated man-dj-love.
Or - if they've been playing under that name longer than you have (together remarkably), are more famous than you, or will just beat your skull in - forfeit the name.
Alternatively fuggedaboudit. I'm sure they'll wise up to you sooner or later.
And when in doubt, ask the int0rnehtz.

register your dj name as a trading name with veda advantage / consumer affairs, then if he is getting paid whilste earning money on your trading........ trouble!! he / she will have to give it up. it will cost around $110 and it will last for 3 years, or $500 for 10 years.

Using your own names fine, but if you share the same name with a famous DJ/producer/label boss then you may rethink using it as a DJ name.

There's nothing wrong with DJ'ing under your own name. In fact, I believe the best DJs out there need no alias.
Apparently there is a DJ Ange in NZ. Never heard of her, not likely to run into her and we've never crossed paths so I doubt it'll be a problem unless one of us hits the big time .... hopefully that'll be me, lol
But I would never use my surname ... too many jokes to be made with that one hahahaha. But, in saying that it could work in my favour ..... I share my surname with the world's first supermodel, a British TV Antique's show dealer and a 70's actress .... you figure it out and you'll see why I don't want to use it, lol

Good in principle but doesn't work in practice.
Registered business names are state-based not federal so you can have the same business name in different states that are totally different businesses.
And you have to police it - they don't. Better get a lawyer son...

Always loved these guys that were solo but sounded like more than one person. E.g. Kings of Tomorrow. So that's what I was after. Then one day I was watching TV and flicked on an old film called, 'Billion Dollar Boys Club' and I knew that's what I was looking for all these years! After using it for a while I find out Pharrel Williams has a clothing brand 'Billionaire Boys Club'. I was not happy! X(
Lol, I always thought there was one then more person in the Billion Dollar Boys Club.. obviously i was wrong lol
Btw.. how do we join this club?

To join, your have to live in Tokyo, love soulful house music, be able to DJ and give me a billion dollars. Anyone interested?

For a possible cheaper alternative see Pharrell Williams for application to the Billionaire Boys Club.

disagree. mo'funk has been around for ages.
In addition, those names are pretty clear rip offs of his.
In reply to the original post.. there is a DJ called One Man Army who plays at Chinese Laundry almost every week. Up until sometime last year, he was called DJ Impact, but another (i think) hardhouse DJ moved to Sydney from the UK using the same name.
Even though the Australia one (the one now called One Man Army) had held the name far longer, he gave it up. I think this was due to style changes in what he played and the like, as well as not really being bothered to compete for a DJ name, but yeah, i thought that might help.

If you become really famous even using your own name can be not allowed. Using acting as an example, Michael J Fox added the J because there was someone before him who was big and famous called Michael Fox. So individuality is a must, question is how important is your name, you dont want to be stuck wiht eric claptons dilemma where he couldnt sell an album or show under 'derek' until it was announced to the media that derek is eric.

This is kinda like Lil' Louis and Little Louie Vega. Also, Dimitri From Paris was just Dimitri, until someone else was producing songs under the name Dimitri as well, so to set himself aparent he added the 'From Paris' part.
I used to call myself Ruckas (Being the huge Wu-tang fan that I am) when I first started making bedroom mixes and handing them out to my mates. Then after a few years I noticed there was another DJ Ruckas doin' the rounds. He was good, I was shit, so it was a no brainer in deciding who deserved it more. Not sure how this helps your cause, but a similar story nonetheless.

having a "stage name" can work both ways. you can use the same one name to do everything you do under .... or create alter-egos who play other styles/genres. either way, have fun with your "image"

It also pays to register the domain name, but you need a registered Business name or company to get the .com.au It is up to you whether you put it on line or not but at least it prevents others from taking it.
My name is Man and was able to register DJ Man as a business name and www.djman.com.au as well as www.djman.net.au. Trade mark rego is underway but would recommend it to all if you are serious about protecting your name.
