View Full Version : Playing with live musicians
Hey Guys,
I'm a drummer from sydney and am looking for a producer/ DJ to collaborate with myself and a guitarist that I've been playing with for 6 years. We have experience playing jazz, rock, rnb and funk along the lines of sly stone, James Brown, Steely Dan, P-funk, Medewski, Martin & Wood, Miles Davis, Prince etc etc.
If you are a creative DJ / Producer and like the idea of reacting to live musicians on stage as well as the audiance then I'm interested in hearing from you. We're intersted in electronic styles from drum and bass, funky house, electro, breaks etc. Perhaps along the lines of Groove Armada, Krafty Kuts, DJ Shadow, Q-bert and anything that is funky, has momentum and gets the dance floor happening.
If this sounds like your cup of tea then send me a message. We are wanting to hit the clubs in the coming months with the aim to be good enough to participate in the festivals next summer.

Wow if only it was that easy
I'm in Japan, but in Oz, isn't festival season nearly over?
Sounds great fun though nate, make sure you post some demos of you get off the ground. Would love to see a massive act along the lines of Groove Armada come out of Oz.
I forgot to add this in my original post.
Check out what these guys from NY are doing in the drum n bass scene. Pretty amazing IMO. This may give you a feel from where I coming from.

I've seen quite a few gigs with Djs and Drummers now...One in paticular caught my attention in the Valley here in Brisbane...A drummer and a Scatch DJ going hard on a breakbeat set...the DJ scatched through the entire set...was an impressive sight to watch and listen...totally enjoyed it...
I play the drums and keyboard , my missus plays the flute...she actually went to a NZ uni and has a Degree in it...we played a few live 'Jazzy Dub, regae and D'nb' gigs with some mates of ours when we were living in Christchurch...(that's actually how we hooked up)...some of the best times and music I've ever had and heard in my music career as most of what we doing....was completly off the cuff and raw music...freeform in a sense....Music you'd never hear or appreciate unless you were there...
Some gigs we had up to eight musicians and vocalists playing with us...No rehersals...someone would drop a lead and we'd follow...f*ken good and inspiring times I will always reflect back on...something to tell the grand babbiez when I'm a ol'grumpy fart....
OMG...did I just say the 'B' word???...please excuse me while I slap myself and bang my head against the wall...
Wow if only it was that easy
If you are good enough and have some marketable quality... Then it is that easy.
Master Mischeif. Check out that youtube link of Jojo Mayer with Nerve if you haven't done so already. They improvise the whole set of drum n bass and the sound engineer mixes it live adding further effects. From what you wrote it seems as though you would dig it.
When I saw it it was like a door opening. Is this the future?
Jojo is one of the elite drummers in the world as well btw.

I've played a bit with musos. Have a little group with my mate on an electric kit and another guy on sax and I play some funky house. Sound's really cool when you can get it.
I run a night called Knocked Up and we always incorporate live musicians and we have a resident scratch dj who just scratches over someones set and a resident percussion player. I really like the idea of having live instruments with dj's, it's something that the crowd can relate to. At the next Knocked Up we're gonna go all out and have different live musicians all night. Should be gold.

I love jamming but hard to find musos who appreciate both acoustic and electronic.
My DJ'ing is very live/improvised so it isn't just the musos that jam with me... i jam with them also.
All of this is much easier to come by in Melbourne although the Gilligan's Island club sounds perfect (in fact i have been looking for this legendary club for months (if it is the same one) after i head about their format from DJ Delay but nobody in the scene could give me details. When i could no fin it Igave up clubbing in Sydney coz it seems only "jukebox" DJ's play here.
Get in touch and let's have some fun.
Check my music on my site (you guys ever recorded anything? care to share?)
