Hey guys I recently got a spot at Spider Club on Chapel Street (Melbourne) playing a few hours of R&B/Hip-hop.

I'm very glad to have a residency at a club however this club (or night) is relatively new.

The manager has done alot in terms of printing off flyers, promoting here and there at uni's, schools etc but still we only seem to pull about 70 people a night.

Mind you the DJ's on before me couldn't even beat match so the manager loved my work and ability to actually scratch lol.

The past two times I have DJed there (my only times) the club has picked up in the amounts of people coming. Is it a gradual thing where these new clubs pick up slowly or do they require a f***load of promotions. This is mostly for my manager (btw he is paying anyone who can get in 15 people under their guestlist.. $50 bux which is pretty amazing!)

Thanks ITM folks!

errr, that's a pretty standard rate ($50/15 on list) - when i was doing street-teaming it was $3/person that got in on your list/your card.

Is the manager doing business cards? In Sydney it's standard for new nights to get a bunch of street teamers (say 10 of them) from slightly different demographics and give each of 'em 300 cards with the night's details, a pretty picture and then the person writes their initials on the card. If that card is returned at the door they get their $3.

So yes, a buttfuckload of promotions...

Sounds like your manager needs a lesson or two

$60 for 5 people? That's not great value for a club at all. $50 for 10 would make much more sense.

And anyway didnt myspace die?

Spider had a myspace last time I promoted there.

sorry this (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=184705983) is a different night.

The guy that runs the chapel street Ed Hardy's owns this bar, not paying it out or anything but I stopped promoting there because I couldn't get anyone to come haha. Possibly my fault but people just weren't interested in going. Is it better now or is there still about 5 people milling about?

i wouldn't rock up for rnb either.

Once again it isnt what you know but who you know :-O besides most rnb hiphop dj's dont really beatmix that much anyway. Cant really see an rnb club doing that well on chapel. Hell there are shitloads of places that play that style everywhere so why would you go there? Yes a shitload of promo is the key but you also need to have a product that sets you apart from the rest. Once again I ask the question why would you go to a club which doesnt have name dj's, a crowd, a reputation or probably facilities as good as other places. Look at your competition..rnb superclub @ qbh etc. Hell most suburban clubs play rnb and top 40 dance/electro so the market is really saturated!

Perhaps finding forums that are more rnb orientated might also be a good idea as itm is more house music and most ppl on here are anti rnb :( I would love to help but it really aint my genre lol but heres a few ideas

1. find local businesses that tie in with the image you want and convince them to let you leave flyers, I used drink cards and cd's for them to play on their stores
2. perhaps an regular underage event as I can see by the clubs pics its a pretty young crowd
3. big name dj every once in a while gives ppl a reason to go and see what you have on offer
4. radio advertising, not that expensive if you go for non peak times
5. promo promo promo!

Deal with things in a professional manner, dress neat, speak like an adult and push what the club and yourself can offer. Brand/Identity is the most important thing and building it does take time and $$$. Unfortunately these days clubs dont bother doing enough promo or do it incorrectly, most clubs just expect a dj to bring a crowd and when you are starting out that is a damn hard thing to do! Good luck ;)

For sure it takes time for a new club night to get patrons. The problem I encounter most is that promoters or bar owners are mega short-term oriented and if the night doesn't pull drinks during its first 2 events, they cancel the gig. You need to promote to the bullshit and give it a fair go to pick up over time.
