Hey guys,

I wanna replace the stock standard CD-Rom that came with my G4 with a burner. I've seen Lite-on burners around for about $110. Has anyone had any experience with these burners and also with replacing the standard burner in G4's ( Given the little blue flip down thing is on the front) alsois there any issue with drivers/compatability.

cheers

now im not sure if theyre even mac compatible, but i would not reccomend those lite on or ben q or acer burners. theyre pretty dodgy. its worth spending the extra money and getting a good one (plextor or yamaha). i got a sony one 18 months ago and the only fucked up discs were my fault (the drive did what it was told, i just told it the wrong stuff)

When it comes to mac's you usually only have one choice for parts, the mac service centre. Some of my mates get away with generic scsi burners on their mac's but the ATA on the mac is weird and only accecpts mac certified devices.

A better idea than replacing your existing drive would be to add a scsi burner (yamaha of course) in the spare bay.

a very reliable option... you just have to fork out for a scsi accellerator card... if you don't already have one...

a friend of mine put an ATAburner in his MAC (replacing the CD-Rdrive) & all seems to be fine - works beautifully... he's kinda good at shit like that tho' - I'll ask him what brand it was. (I'm a yamaha fan also)

cheers

Hi Guys,

Cheers for your responses. I actually did some other research on the net and the other day picked up a LITEON 40x burner for $110. Installed it in the same bay as the original CD ROM was and after a bit of fucking around i've got it working. There was a conflict with an Iomega extension which was making it freeze on startup but i deleted that (dont have a ZIP drive) and now it seems to be working well. I'm sure the quality isn't the same as a plextor but for $100 I'm not complaining. So anyways if you want a great resource for finding out about modifying yr mac check out

yeah.. it was the plextor that my mate got... he connected it to the internal connection on his SCSI card... but he's done the same with a plextor ATA for another friend(connected to the internal ATA bus) & they found similar...just had to iron out a few driver conflicts
glad you got it working... that site is a beauty.. I use it heaps
cheers
