Niche Productions present the return of antipodean soulful 7-piece, Solaa to showcase a night of the very best in soul, funk and hip-hop.

When it comes to pure soul-satisfying grooves, NZ outfit Solaa are in a class of their own. This 7 man (and woman)-strong outfit weave a smooth selection of soulful hip-hop, R&B and funk.

Released in NZ in 2006, Solaa's debut album 'Steps in Time' features some of the best vocal talents in New Zealand including Ladi6, Scribe and Hollie Smith (Blue Note/Manhattan Records) and is touted as a “beautifully eclectic blend of jazz, funk soul and hip-hop” (Out of Hand/ UK). Their success didn’t stop on their home-turf and they were soon making waves and impressions across the Pacific.

Following on from the release of their debut album, Solaa has received love from audiences across the globe. 'Sylphlike' and 'Chance' were dropped on BBC's 1Xtra and 'Aintnothing' received airplay throughout North America. With an impressive list of live shows already in Australia, including sold out performances at Melbourne's Prince of Wales and Sydney's Forum alongside Shapeshifer and a huge show at Melbourne's Forum Theatre with Fat Freddy's Drop, Solaa have begun to attain a hungry funk-loving audience with support up and down the country.

Don't suppose you could see your way clear to bringing Hollie Smith and her band out, grizz, sir? They absolutely killed it at the Vanguard last year.

I like it, although it is not quite sure whether it wants to be a bandroom where can you can get a decent meal, or a restaurant where you can see bands. Downsrtairs is where you eat and upstairs is a sort of mezzanine gallery type of arrangement.

They are mainly booking blues/roots/jazz artists - the stage is big enough for bout four or five people but you wouldn't want to put a big band there. I've seen David Bridie, Hollie Smith, and Circle of Rhythm (Ben Walsh's percussion ensemble) there, and I think a couple of other shows that aren't forcing their way into the front of my memory at ths point.

I think my mate has played in the Vanguard as part of The Bakery.. they certainly had more than 4-5 on stage... their band totals 11 musicians :p
