View Full Version : Which OS?

Which OS is best for producing music on PC? I knnow that lots of non-music apps have heaps of trouble with Windows XP, and Windows ME just sucks. So what are the advantages/disadvantages of each OS? 98/2000/ME/XP? Does it really matter?
Could I get some informed feedback please.:?
i use 2000, its simple powerful and effective. and about as stable as windows can get right now (if its setup to run right). 98 seems to be good also but ive never used it. 95 sucked, and windows ME sucked big time also. i mean i never had a problem running audio appz in ME but i did have a problem with the operating system as a whole. id have to reboot multiple times a day coz id keep getting the blue screen all the time. and in the end ME did some fucked up shit that prevented itself from booting up. rendering it useless.

win98 second edition (lite - custom install so you're only installing the critical bits, not all the active desktop and task scheduler crap)
it's CPU use is very low, its unusually stable if you treat it with some respect, and all hardware has win98 driver support.
win2000pro comes in a close second place, it takes up more standby CPU resources, although the filesystem (NTFS) is faster and the memory management is a little better... It does have some conflict issues with certain soundcards, USB devices, drivers, etc...

i use 2k pro it's very stable i havn't had any probs with it yet
but if it's a pc dedicated to music 98 se lite is the only option it's soooooo quick and ermmmm lite
boots up in a flash progs launch faster and it's very very stable
I know you are all going to shoot me but anyway, I run ME and the only issue in 3 years is the driver of my SW1000XG is incompatible with protools.
My friends have all tried ME and mostly hated it because of its shite gaming performance. But I have no issues with it other than the protools problem.

I chose to run Win ME too....so far so good. I rely on my system up on stage so I configured my puter to be stable above all else. I custom installed ME lite with very few of the normal apps that comes with windows. I also get the updates from MicroSoft which greatly enhanced its stability.
The reason I went for ME was on the advice of a computer freak friend of mine and various literature that says its more designed for multi-media roles.
BUT, as I said stability is my most treasured spec in a system so I will update to the next best thing when that proves itself to be better.........maybe thinking of W98se as Phunkdust said.

under-the-bonnet, ME is the same as win98se... the problem is it has so much other crap added to it, it runs like utter shit in many applications... its driver support isnt as good as 98 or 2000 too...

So far there's been no mention of WinXP, has anyone actually tried it? I would like to be able to run XP 'cos it looks cool and i've heard good things from computer experts saying that XP is by far the best Microsoft OS yet, so, any info?
im running xp home edition on my insipron laptop. have cubase sx/tons of vsti's/reason1.01 running on it right now. very nice no dramas so smooth. but i guess its because there's almost nothing else installed on it and its got some serious horse power under the bonnet. going to upgrade it to xp pro edition this week after i format my pc (which has so much crap on it that its not funny)

In terms of overall os stability you cant beat XP. However in terms of loading applications that are not specifically designed for XP there may be some stability issues. The self repair feature of the os is a great tool for those users out there who think they know alot and tend to fry their systems trying to play system administrator. Look for XP versions of your favourite apps. If they are not readily available, get on to the vendor and ask the question.
