so they're sick of suing grannies now is that it?
i doubt they'd have enough time to go thru gigs worth of music either

I don't think they are chasing music burnt from CD; they are chasing music from Limewire etc. I was astounded by the fact that 99% of people who posted comments on the website of the story above were dead against the idea. It's a bit like customs checking your bags and finding stolen goods or contraband in there.
one problem. real pirates don't use airports. they use pirate ships. matey.

The point, is that they want to use customs and counter terrorism laws to allow the searching of peoples electronic devices. They would not be allowed to search someones ipod in the street, but because there are specific laws that are designed to prevent people importing dangerous goods etc, they could theoretically use them to convict people of non customs related crimes.

My question is, how do they tell if its a pirated album or a album you have ripped from a cd that you have purchased from a shop, or downloaded from itunes etc etc?

If you've done nothing wrong, then you've got nothing to hide!

They use the same technology that customs in other countries use to search your computer for pron. USD search devices and hard drive screening devices.
I read that they are going to do this in the UK, but instead of arresting you they will confiscate the infringing harware.
While this will help to curve piracy it really is an invasion of privacy. Police cant even search you unless there is grounds for suspicion.

If I have done no wrong then I shouldnt even be searched.
The search system is bound to screw up everynow and then, and if your one of the unlucky ones who has done nothing wrong and the system screws up you will be treating just like a drug trafficker

The way society goes, remind me of these futuristic movies (can't recall any titles) where the gov has complete control over everything...
It says "infringements on a commercial scale." Which kinda applies that you'd need alot of music.
You can get done for priated movies, so guess they have a point IF you have a cd in a priated case etc. going through Ipod at customs is pretty rich. Most people are just using it for personal use anyway not commerical sale.

but what about my privacy?
what if I have sensitive work documents on the device? what if I have pr0n on there?
fuck that shit.
also, where does the record industry stand if your ipod is filled with sets illegally obtained by someone else?
You'd have to try fucking hard to remove my device from my possession.
cunts.
Lucky I've got no pop and rock on my iPod..

 Nice...
Going down in a blaze of glory with your Ipod.

copied DVD's have been illegal for a long time...do you think thsat means people aren't bringing 10000's back with them on every trip to Bali, or Thailand. We can get all up in arms about 'my privacy, my prrriiiivacy' but I seriously doubt its going to be different to what it is now, they can search your bag, all this means is that instead of searching through a physical wallet of cd's they can go through a digital cd wallet in your ipod tracklist.
Just shelf the ipod as your plane lands, you'll be fine.

On the other hand you shouldn't have to prove to people you've done nothing wrong based on absolutely no evidence they had prior to a search?
My music collection is hardly 100 kilos of Columbian blow. I wish it was sometimes but the fact is that it isn't.

Absolutely serious.. I was flying into Canada from the US with all my DJ gear. They were suspicous i was going to work there without a Visa but I was actually going fishing with a mate for the weekend but heading back to oz after that (hence why I had all my gear).
I was flagged at customs, got luggage searched for substances and the final search they did was to check my laptop and ipod for pron.
I had two options, show everything, or have my hard drive taken out. Luckily I had none on the laptop, the ipod had a few naughty clips and the customs guy had to actually watch every single one for beastiality and child pron.
Really is quite invasive to have all your computers contents looked at... especially if you have any content featuring yourself and or wife/gf/parnter.

I ended up being locked up with a bunch of mexican's for a couple of hours before being escorted onto a flight back to the states.. hahahaha.. but the pron was fine!!!
