Hi Chaps,

Was wondering if anyone could share some tips for mixing toons together that cannot be beatmatched. What sorta techniques are there?

Ive been using stops, powerdowns and using the echo effect..... but their getting a little stale.
Also been trying to use cuts more , but the never sound quite right.

I really like to throw a really different tune in the mix, keeps things exciting!

Any pointers?

seriously just keep practising your cuts if your just dropping off beat tracks.
Learn your tracks and their structures and drop away!

Righto then, off to cutting practice.
Are their any tips to cutting? Just drop at the first beat of a new phrase is all isnt it?

Just mess about till it feels/sounds right.
To me this sort of mixing is all about doing at the right time, i wouldn't try and cut and dump between stuff that is way differnet in bpm's becuase it sounds shit most of the time, try and find bit's in the track with no beats, keyboard washes or whatever, outros etc

can't you just play a song .. and when it finishes ... play another ?

This is one of the things that cracks me up about a lot of DJs ... their inability to just play tunes and not mix another series of tunes at 130BPM. There's so much emphasis put on CDJs Vs turntables, Pioneer Vs Denon, HD25s Vs everything else, flange Vs chorus, faders Vs rotaries, cuts Vs fades, hardstyle Vs prog etc etc ... the bottom line though is that DJing is about tune selection. If you can't do this then you should give up on the rest of the wankery.

johnny : check out the mix at the top of this page :http://funkedub.com/site/downloads.html ... no beat mixing till the 13th track or so. It was just an exercise in putting down some tracks i wanted to hear together.

Don't worry about tricks ... work on mood and groove ... not BPM

DJ'ing = No rules.

Just do what sounds good, whether you drop on first or fourth beats depends on the tune.
Again, learn your tracks.

If your asking how to dj your doing it wrong!

agreed! when I first started mixing I tryed to follow "rules" it just got me nowhere. Then I started playing around & it seeing what different things sounded like & experimenting.
i've only been on the decks for about 8months, but my mixing has come along heaps!

I agree on doing what sounds good however, when I started out there was certain things I needed pointed out to me etc like correct phrasing.
Just wondered if there were any tips on making tunes of greatly different bpm sound a bit better

nail on the head, too much ANALising and not much doing

That's what MCing is when done right/well essentially ... taking the role of the radio jockey and dividing it between 2 people in a dance situation

^ yeah pretty much but i'd rather not hear anyone at all if they're going to put on a radio dj accent just to announce the next track

there are some good MCs out there though
