View Full Version : Mixer for a beginner!
In the past year I've been bedroom DJing with only my laptop, and I feel that I'm prepared to buy a mixer. So, what ITM recommends for a beginner DJ? :)

I bought vestax two channel mixer second hand for $200.
New I'd imagine they wouldnt be too much more, its hte VMC002xl one, no effects , no bullshit, just a good quality 3 band 2 channel mixer.
Also the crossfader can be replaced and the crossfader band can be switched from mixing to scratching.
I'd highly recommend !

dxm06!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
best beginner mixer IMO, cheap, it gives you a good into into effects, 3 band, alternate cross fader curves. sturdy, fun, blue, silver, cat, dog, rat, brat
DXM06
vestax entry level new
vestax PMC 2channel range second hand
ecler/rane second hand
pioneer DJM 300
pioneer sounds like rubbish, but they are bullet proof. DXM will last you enough time to upgrade, but it how much you can flog it for then is questionable. ditto vestax entry level. the others have good resale value.

yea dxm 06 is the 2 channel version of the dxm09. its a good transition between a scratch and a club mixer, you have 3band eq and effects and stuff, crossfader curve, replaceable faders etc. just two channels tho...

definately a good mixer for a beginner. you can get em for $750 too.. so thats a great entry level mixer. i had a choice yesterday in what to get. a DJM800 or the 400. i reasoned with my income that i wasn't a beginner anymore and the 800 will last me 7-10 years. i had the 600 that i sold last week for over 7 years. sold it in good condition for $600. the DJM600 is a very good mixer too.. if you have $1000.. go for a brand new DJM600... it will last a very long time and very solid piece of equipement
oooh yeah.. i got to get me a DJM800 in the next 2 weeks.. After 4 years without having anything to mix with properly i think i deserve it..

That DXM09/06 is one of the flimsiest pieces of shit i've ever tried.
My starter mixer was a Pioneer DJM500 that a mate leant me. Good to learn the ropes, but the EQ is shit and i didn't really use the EFX.
Bought a S/H Vestax PMC-50A - heads above in build quality and EQs that don't sound like ass. I got it for $200.
That PMC-17 (i think it is?) that funkedub posted can regularly be had on eBay for under $200. I'd pick that over a Numark any day of the week.
Quality = Vestax, Ecler, Rane.
EFX = Pioneer, Numark.
As for durability... well, the Pioneer's 1/2 alive (albeit after 10-15years) - the EFX still (kinda) work, the line only channel is perfect (but useless as i'm TT only), one of the TT channels in perfect, one of the TT channels has a skewed stereo image and the 4th channel has a fucked EQ (you touch the bass knob and it will pull bass from every channel etc)
I dunno where I'm going with this, except that I've seen many Vestax PMCs and a couple of Ecler SMACs and NUOs go for $200ish.
Newjack - who the fuck still plays a DJM-600? Not a club standard anymore, nor an amazing mixer.

Do you actually know what ableton does?
Have you used it before and done the tutorials?
You sound confused about its role in djing... :stroke:

djm 300 pick one up now for like 200 bucks. Will last you untill you want to buy a the best mixer your finnal mixer or a top rang mixer. You dont need all the stupied gimmics of a djm 400. Although all depends on what genra your taking up. (sorry about spelling)

I'm a complete noob at ableton, I've only done one mix (http://www.inthemix.com.au/forum/showpost.php?p=391989014&postcount=333) on it. I was previously using VirtualDJ. So, yes, I don't know a lot of things of the software.
buy a mixer that has midi control function on it if u wanna control ableton with it~ i think the pioneer djm-400 is good and it is midi assignable too

The DJM400 has no midi functionaility at all. Surprisingly enough, a midi controller controls your assigned midi quite well in ableton....
Seems like my budget is a little low. I will have to save up a few bucks more to buy me a Ableton compatible mixer. Well, thanks to all that contributed. :( I'll bump the thread when I'm ready to buy one.

Ideally i want this

but i had to settle for this and although not as ballsy as the above mixer it does take a good beating and still delivers

my first was a behringer djx700.
basically the same as i pioneer djm600, but effects are harder to use, different brand, sound quality not as good (but you dont really notice it if your doing house parties and the like), and a MUCH cheaper price

fair enough... i guess i was just lucky enough to score a hand-me-down DJM500, which is less plasticy. I have seen the numarks go in for repair too often though - usually to do with the EFX section.
IMO the pioneer800 just feels and looks so fucking plastic after playing on my vestax though.

they probably overused the flanger effect and destroyed the flux capacitor:rainman: :rainman: :rainman: :rainman: :rainman:

I'll have to disagree, that VMC004fx is great imho...had one for a year and love it. Not much else that sounds as good for that price. Very very well built.
But the PMC280 & 580 are the ducks though. Why people still buy pooinear mixers when these are out there i'll never know (actually i do....sheep...)
