Im sure this will fire up one or two people, but what is peoples take on sharing the odd bunch of tunes with your friends. I personally have no problem with this, I figure I spend enough cash on tunes to warrant this and the reason I do this is more so i can have access to new artists I may not have come across and also to listen to what my friends are currently digging. I dont do it often just every now and then i'll burn a cd or flick em a usb stick, sorta like a mix tape.
Before anyone goes, ahhhhhh thats shit the artist deserves payment for that track, i totally agree but there alot of new artists i have found because i have done this with my friends and have gone on to buy many of their tunes.
yeah its file sharing in a sense, but for the greater cause.
fire away.............

when my father was a kid, he was recording music off the radio with a microphone and a tape recorder
i dont reckon its that bad at all, i mean atleast your buying the tune to begin with and not sharing gigs & gigs worth of illegally downloaded music..

I share occasionally, but only with friends who pay for music. I refuse to share anything with friends that pirate music

It's a pretty contentious issue....
Doing this could easily lead to tracks getting passed around to more & more people and then losing the artist deserved income.
But on the other hand it does give the artist exposure to more customers who may not have heard of them before. I know i've been "given" tracks by artist that i've never heard of, or would never have come accross, and now i buy lots of their releases.

Most people share music
and the fuck heads that cry about it and say its bad have probably done it/are doing it anyways
so share away

I used to record countdown of the television with my little tape deck up close to the speaker..

i don't think i would find half the music i dig without going to my mates, and vice versa, and burning a cd or whatever... plus the experience of sharing music with mates is awesome. can't be beat.
share away sons and daughters
I have been witness to DJs copying their mates' entire hard drives of music. :|
i haven't really played digital up until a few months ago so haven't really gotten copies of music from mates. I am still in the "write-down-track-name-and-buy-it-for-myself" mindframe. although i am sure i will probably end up grabbing copies of cool/obscure tracks at some point.

i'm more a fan of the write down and buy for myself as well - particularly as i don't spin digital.
That said, on the odd occasion i'll burn tracks for mates, but that's more to give them a different idea (eg. if they're playing some harder minimal/tech, giving them some deephouse or something.
But i'm more a fan of giving them a mix cd/demo that you've done - that way they can hear the music (and in a proper context) and can buy it if they want.

i give shit to my friends all the time. If i find a track they're the first ones to hear about it. They all either buy a lot of shit themselves or get all the music from me and don't use sharing programs. They aren't into everything as much as i am so if i didn't give it to them they wouldn't ever hear it so wouldn't buy it anyway. If they really like something they'll go buy the artist album or mixes as well

good to hear, i was expecting to be sledged for that one.
as some mentioned tho, if you buy a track and are excited about it, it makes sense to tell your mates. I dont really get to do the "go round mates place and mix" thing too often in London (which is a shame) so this is the next best option. we can then bore everyone else talking about it at the pub
People have been doing this since cassettes first came out - aaah the good old mixtape! I don't think there's a problem with it at all. The only problem is people who are actively into music/DJing that download pirated tracks.

Yeh I hate that! I hate when someone comes over and is like
"Ohh give me your back-up hard drive and I'll throw all your music onto my computer"
F#$% that!
I'm happy to supply tunes to mates who ask me to make a cd for them so they can get familiar with some artists tracks, so if the artist is coming for a show my mates won't whinge "But I dont know any of their songs or what music that is". So it works for both of us, I have someone to go with & they get educated on what other music is out there
My opinon is, theres more positives to come out of this, than negative.
"Ohh give me your back-up hard drive and I'll throw all your music onto my computer"
Has somebody actually said that to you?A That's pretty ballsy!!!

I arrived home one night to find my old housemate with his drive plugged in to my server, mid transfer.
I would have preferred him to be fucking my girlfriend.
That was about 3 years ago and I'm still dirty about it.

i sure hope you gave him a :slap:
As I said - sharing in terms of an education thing is sweet, but knowing that someone has no intention of buying the music, and then wants to play it out is really a bit steep now.

Anyways, I personally don't mind, but it poses the question. If u download a track. Give it to/share it with a mate, then they play the track at a paid DJ gig, is that wrong? Should they by rights, then purchase the track, seeing as they are getting paid?
look music is made to be listened to. artists make music for fun, so i don't see why not.

Mate, FUCK YOU for download illigal music!
....Nah im just joking. I think its good, get you interested in new stuff, opens new doors so you go and research them on your own and probably end up buying their stuff anyways..
dude, i think it's a DJ's purpose to share music... there's always gonna be other revenues of cash other than record sales, artists are just gonna have to adapt to that! anyway, i think it isn't fair that someone who can't afford to buy CDs or wateva can't be allowed to enjoy a bangin' track like those who can afford~
DEMOCRATIZE MUSIC!
artists make music for fun, so i don't see why not.
Most make music to keep a roof over their head and food on their families table.

DEMOCRATIZE MUSIC!
Congratulations, one of the most ignorant statements on this forum!
So with that same stupid logic, it's fair that someone who can't afford a car can't be allowed to enjoy driving one like those that work to make money to buy one. You want to 'democratize' all goods and services? You can go live in communist Russia if you like?
but music man... music is different.. come on now~ peace and love

Its ok but if there going to go play it out there for making money. they should go out and pay for the track. Also it should be for the music not for the moeny. But for some people to produce the tracks they need time. You cant work and produce at the same time. there for they survice of the money they get for producing. even though it may be what they get from the song eg. gigs or promostional stuff. It may not be enough.
Also its Only ok to pirate if its some stupied rap artis like 50 cent who has a song "going strait to the bank with this" or justin timberlake. or some stupied rich cunt like that who dose not need any more money.

Dude, could DJs climb up their own arses any further in search for life's purpose?
I think it's absolutely woeful that artists need to resort to DJing to earn back what is rightfully theirs.

A band/ DJ should make all his money from his performances and just use his music in order to sell out his shows.
If a DJ is good live, everyone will go to see them, they will travel the world and make money.

^^^ But not all music is produced in a format conducive to being executed in a live setting...
...unless live means just burning it to a CD and hitting play. :|
So once again we travel down the path of music only being validated once there's DJ tosspot ready to take all the money/glory for playing other people's material.

I do it all the time with a mate of mine, we spend tons of money on beatport each so I really dont mind doing it here and there, considering most artists we buy we usually come back to if we have shared a copied track with each other. Its not an issue and it never will be.
