if jsut using for dj'ing at home i reckon the good old truths. not the best dynamically but for around $500 cant beat them

why do you need monitors for dj'ing? save money and plug in to your home stereo etc...

I did this for years, and i reckon the sound i got out of a $200 Sony Kmart stereo is better than the truths i have now!! More bottom end! I did have 4 speakers coming out of the one stereo, but for value for money you cant go wrong!!

Fostex PM-2

+1 here

Had a pair of PM2's for two years now
Great Dj'ing monitors - loud, even response.

Can go loud enough for any bedroom banger and also for small parties
Plus, at lower volumes they sound great (unlike cheap home hifi, that generally needs a higher SPL fto hear the full range of sound)
Lower volume = longer mixing sessions without long term hearing impairment

You may not care now, but you will later!

I love my KRK's but they aren't really cheap.

for DJing? o rly?.. i like them, but not what i think of as pleasant speakers to listen to. More like my go to for seating a vocal in a mix.

fostex pm2's FTW

yeah i can't stand listening to music for enjoyment on monitors like ns10's~~ they're too precise

i don't even think of ns10s as precise - they have quite a forward midrange. Just for me, they're easy to learn. Either way, they don't do the sub-bass range well at all, which is the opposite of what i want from DJ speakers.

depends what kind of music your djing with- truths and esi's are about the same price and are both pretty good while not being fantastic (told they actually use truths at sae) - but the main (noticeable) difference between the two would be that the ESI's have a bit more punch on the low levels - just make sure you dont make the mistake i did and shell out the bit extra for the near08's without considering where you are using them-great speakers but they are fucking massive and heavy and rattle all my windows

what a waste of money

Rockits are cheap and probably good for DJing with as they do tend to colour the frequencies that will be more akin to a Hi Fi than studio monitors

a pair of VXT8's from KRK are certainly not cheap and pretty impressive by most accounts

hey, did you know you can turn speakers down and not run them flat out all the time? just mentioning it because a couple of powered 12's would be nice for mixing at home and could also double as an ok house party system. similar price to a set of monitors, but more boom boom.

first half true - second half not.

Even at low volumes, PA style enclosures sound quite different to monitors - they are generally more fatiguing (often have a built in presence boost into the amplification circuit) and don't extend up as high.
I'd still go the HiFi/studio monitor for home listening/DJing.

But yes - if you see yourself playing houseparties, then go the PA speakers for sure. I also don't find that low end punches too well without volume on big speakers.

i have a set of 3 way speakers with 12s" i spent a whole $150 on. they're passive ... but my amp was only $30 anyway ... done many a house party and essentially what i've mixed and produced on the past few years (replaced the mid's n highs due to rowdy house parties too) ... great for mixing and enjoying tunes ... but even still, to get more accurate (dj) mixes i wouldn't mind something with a bit more clarity and accuracy.

HS80s are on the horizon :stroke:

for now i just need something for my room but when i start doing house parties i would probably get PA speakers i also want to record my mixes, so for $400 monitors would they give me good clarity or would i have to spend a bit more?

if your doing house parties, get someone else to pay for the hire of PA gear. Get them to pick it up, or make sure theres substantial beer in it for you. Use the money you would have spent on PA gear and spend it on somthing decent for your setup.

I have the nEar08's. I can't say i have golden ears as they like to call good hearing in audiophile circles, but for the price they are what sounded best to me at the time. In the end the best thing as always is to go in and listen to the different monitors yourself if you can, as to some extent choice of monitors for djing is going to be subjective

i was thinking of getting a pair as well, the guy in the store played em and they sounded pretty good for the price, compared to behringer which was at a similar price.

been using fostex PM05's for about 18 months now. crystal clear, will run at 85 - 90 db all night no probs. From time to time you will find them on special for around $800 a pair with a free sub thrown in. check them out.

dont know if any1 has said this, but best thing to do is go and try them out 4 urself. A few that were recommended to me i didnt like. Going and hearing them really helped me choose what was right for me. Have a look on ebay, sometimes they have some good bargains if cost is an issue.
