I might be moving from melbourne to sydney
has anyone tried moving records and their gear interstate?
What is the best way to move about 3000 records? How much should i be looking at paying?
I do not even want to think about what is going to happen if I was to go the US or england

Yeah I used Grace, because they were the quickest. I was stressing hardcore about heat damage to the vinyl, many sleepless nights....
I tried to get them to insure them, but they stated that I would have to itemise every single record, and they would replace them if they were lost or damaged and they wouldn't come to any "Agreed" value. (And good luck trying to itemise 3000)
BUT
It doesn't include atmospheric or climate damage. So if they warp they basically said tough shit.... Naturally I replied that they are irreplaceable, and the only reason I am insuring them was because I was nervous of warping.
Anyway within 2 weeks they arrived safely without damage. Luckily it was during winter, so heat problems in a shipping container didn't matter too much. You can get a refrigerated shipping container, but they are hard to find, and quite expensive.
I just packed mine in styrofoam with cloths keeping them tucked in all nice and cosy so there is no movement. You will most likely want to find out when their next shipping container is going to be sent, because they sit all your stuff in it (most likely out in the sun) until it is full, for obvious cost effective reasons.
You could on the other hand have them couriered, but they go on size and weight. Needless to say it would cost you substantially more, and courier drivers aren't exactly known for their "carefull" driving practices.

3000 records in a car????
Unless you are driving a commercial vehicle i seriously doubt 1500 records would fit in a car?
Specialist movers are pretty good and i am sure if you specified some conditions they would be oblige for the right money - eg transport overnight to avoid the heat of the day etc etc
Just all in the planning and packing records up well prior to the move
hire a moving van and drive yourself if you dont trust any logistic companies.

shows how i have no idear about the volume of vinyl. i would be amazed that you cant get it all in a trailer and a car combined. shit if it were my collection of vinyl i would make 2 or 3 trips rather tan shipping. because fuck wouldnt risk it

I agree totally
The math says the following:
1 record with slip case = 30 x 30 x .4cm roughly
3000 x .4
That's 1200cms or 12 metres of records in a line
Average box trailer is 180cm by 150cm by 30cm deep
So you are looking in an ideal world packed in perfect conditions 9 linear metres of records in a trailer.
Still have to find another 3 metres of space in the car to pack them securely.
Good luck :)
Then a 950km (10hr or longer) plus drive alone......:geek: :?

And does anyone do one way trailer hire? No idea myself, never done it???
Otherwise add another 1800kms to your journey and the movers / courier suddenly doesn't look too shabby price wise :)

There is a fragile frieght specialist. Can't remember what there company name is though off the top of my head. Most transport companys have special cages for frieght like this. But with the wieght of a hundred records on adverage per crate It will be used as bottom stow and other frieght will be stacked on top of it to cube out the unit it travels with. And yes this includes courier companys.
Just about all freight company's use GPS tracking technology so your frieght can be tracked by you via a wireless lappie or PC thoughout the duration of it's jouney.
As far as insurance goes, if you use a freight company. Your a fool if you don't insure the goods.
If you use a transport firm...drop them to the depot yourself and on their arrival...pick them up your self. The less your freight is handled the better. In my experiance, pick-up and drop-off are the most common cause for freight just vanishing into thin air.
Pack em in tight as possible to eliminate movement during travel and yes use some type of padded protection. If you use a pallets(A good way to prevent the frieght handlers from throwing your freight around. Thirty plus crates is heavy, and more secceptable to rough handling), Do not go over the edges of the pallet and use corner boards for added protection(It would be a good idea to wrap cardboard around the sides also...a quick visit to your local K-Mart or such should provide you with more than enough). Use lot's of layer boards or cardboard to protect the top and use black plasctic wrap to avoid pepz seeing what's inside(It's also a good indicator if someone's been into it. And plaster it with 'Extremely Fragile' stickers all over it on all four sides. Also 'Top Stow Only' stickers can be obtained by most transport firms. Alternatively, you could box it up in a wooden crate. Rack your brain to who could help you out with this. Maybe someone here has knowledge of this and can help you out.
Whatever you decide...I hope it works out the best for you mate. And your gear turns up the same way you left it. Best of luck mate....;)
so how much that cost yah?
It was about $1k, which included some furniture, but I travelled 3 times further than you.

i say sell the lot. everyone is doing it
just jokes. i was gonna sell most of my records a while back. only 260 of them left. but i couldnt part with em. i already parted with over half but i knew the ones i was keeping i wasnt ever gonna sell. but i know alot of hardcore waxheads have sold up and moved onto digital only. problem selling is your not selling a piece of wax, your selling a piece of you. so yeah, i couldnt do it.
i would do what others have said if your really worried. Rent a mini van or someshit on the cheap for 2 days.

I know you can fit 2xCDJ1000, 1xDJM300, 1xCDJ200 and a road case in car.... And I know that people will 'unfit' it for you while you're not watching.
