Hey All,
I recently purchased 2 CDJ800 mkIIs and some TDK printable blank CDs.
One batch of the TDK cds has a smooth printing surface (similar to a normal blank disc) but the second batch has a rougher/textured surface.
I noticed over the last day or so that while playing these textured CDs the CDjs seems to emit a loud humming noise which isn't there when I play the smooth CDs. Today one of the CDj's also froze up about 5 minutes into playing a song then started/stopped before I ejected the CD
I was just wondering if there was a reliable brand of printable blank CDs?
Has anyone come across this before?
Thanks

tdks aren't too bad....just use a lower burning speed like you would with any other audio cd. i've never had a prob with burning at 16x or under. go too much higher and you run the risk of dodgy burns
try burning witha different program..
i burnt a couple of CD's they didn't work tried burning in a different program and they worked.. this was with blank TDK's with a white surface.

have a look at the inner hub of the different cds. do they both have a white TDK logo?
I had a problem with a batch i bought a while back, they didnt have the logo, and they were crap. the bottoms of the discs were sticky too.
Ive never had a problem with the ones with the white logo. Unfortunately there's no way to tell which ones they are till you open the packet. Im hoping that it was just an off batch and they are all good now!
if you want the "best" quality, go for the Taiyo Yuden brand.
Second Taiyo Yuden. Never heard a messed up disc with them
Iv'e been good with Verbatim so far.
Taiyo Yuden hands down, longest lasting disk, also the most expensive

Yeah, Taiyo Yuden/That's are the go.
Verbatim/Mitsubishi are just as good also.

My last batch of TDKs were sticky as all fuck. Like a fine spray over every disc. Didn't realise until I went to burn the first CD and my MacBook started making all sorts of strange noises. Took them back to Dick Smith and changed them over.
Where do you get these Taiyo Yudens from?

I think there's a bad batch of TDK CDs around that don't have the white TDK label on the central plastic rim. I've bought two of the bad batch but I returned both & got some new ones which I haven't had any problems with - They both had the white TDK on the centre plastic.
I haven't had any problems with the good batches - no humming noise
I haven't tried any of the recommended CDs yet though

Verbatim Datalife+ Inkejet Printable CDR (Silver) is what i use with great success, they come in a 50 spindle with just a white label on the spindle. Plus they use the super AZO dyes which are apparantly pretty good for data retention.
I use taiyo-uiden or whatever the spelling is for my DVD-R's as its not very easy to find the CD versions near where i live.

Thanks. That's down the road from me. I will go for a stroll on the weekend and have a look.... might stumble into DJW and Store DJ while I'm down there... Could be an expensive stroll.

I use the Vinyl CDs, i have ones with a blank centre though. We had them at work for some reason (IT technician) so i just flogged em and ordered some more.
They work fine, have been using them in a club dj environment for 4+ months. Havnt had any stuff up.

I used to hand out demos on those discs!
The only place I know where to get those is Harvey norman.
I noticed them a couple of weeks ago.
Might downgrade to them from the Sony's

Found a store in Hawthorn that sells em. Might give Verbatim Vinyl CDs a try.

i don't know what the sonys are like nowadays, but i lost a whole heap of data from many different spindles on those discs a couple of years back. the top layer liked to bubble and peel.
never again

The problem with TDK's is they're not all made by TDK.

I've found TDK's to be very reliable. I burn at x24 and have never had a error to date!
You can get a 100 pack of white printable TDK's for $25 from MSY! :)

bought hundreds of tdk golds over the past year, never stuffed up...
... ok i lie, have stuffed up, but that is completelydue to a faulty denon s3500 deck... no joke fuckin useless. ever had a deck freeze mid track for no reason??
absolutely lovely to mix on, but so unreliable... one deck was so bad that even after sending back for repair it wouldnt read any cds, so dj warehouse just replaced it for a spankin new one - no questions asked. love dj warehouse, nice guys.

Hey Guys,
Can anyone comment on whether the Taiyo-Yudens at MSY are printable or not? I'm looking to pick up some on thursday from the Sydney-Ultimo branch.
For reference, Been testing a few different cd's so far, with the following sucess:
-Ritek @ 16x = multiple failed reads.
-Benq @16x = Fine
-TDK printable @ 16x = Fine
For more info on your cd's, this site is great:

EDIT: Scratch that, MSY don't sell the TY cd's. However these uys do, and at a not terrible price:

I'm sure i've said this before, but tbh i just use Memorex brand printable cds.... from Big W. They're about $29 for 100 discs... fuck the value is unreal, and i have never had a fuck up on these bad boys since i have been buying them (around 8 months). I would definately reccomend them over TDK Golds... totally. I've even been noticing decay in the surface coating of some of my older TDK Gold discs (<2yrs) making them unplayable in places. these discs have just been stored in a wallet for extended periods of time, and little tiny holes are starting to appear in the gold coating, making the track stop when the laser hits it.
anyway, memorex, reccomended highly!

taiyo yuden cdr's are the best.
try it for yourself and you'll see why, tried using it a few months ago and ended up buying a giant box of it (200's in the box) coz i was so happy with it, i previously used everything from sony (worst ones i ever tried) to tdk to some non-branded australia post cdr (meh... poor quality too) at the end nothing ever compares to taiyo yuden cdr's. If anything is as good as the taiyo's they happened to be taiyo's but rebranded into other brand (verbatim does this sumtimes, you can check the manufacturer using the nero diagnostic tool, in which it tells you which factory the cdr actually comes from)

I gave TDK another shot, using the full face printable ones from officeworks, $12 for a 50 spindle, havent had an issue with them yet.
I've been using the white tdks and I've noticed the difference with the rough and smooth ones though.
Any way I'm thinking of getting a cd printer...I know I could get a pixma but are there any smaller cheaper alternatives? Even if it only prints CDs
