... what can you still hear??

http://www.inthemix.com.au/lifestyle/features/40118/Way_Out_West_star_talks_tinnitus

I thnk i've had a slight ringing for a while (back from the walkman days), got much worse when I saw Hybrid at Brown Alley earlier this year and since then I've never gone out without earplugs (just the cheapies - is it worth getting custom made ones?)

Are we all on the fast-track to permanent hearing loss? Do you use protection? discuss...

i usually ring for a day or two after a big weekend, but other than that i do okay

freaked myself out a little not too long ago, spent too long bang in front of some speakers a few nights in a row, spent a week hearing the ring

but i havent learnt yet really, i keep meaning to get some ear plugs, but i just love the loud music too much at the moment

My experience with them... YES!

I got some for DJing & found out that for me personally they're not that great for mixing, but I put them straight in once I finish my set. I only started doing it more recently & waking up in the morning & not having that ringing blocked feeling is a delight.

I paid $120 & I can tell you if I go to any festival, club gig etc.. I won't be leaving home without them. It still all sounds great so there's no real loss in what you hear. Although I do find that they start to get a bit irritating after say 1.5hrs but taking them out for 5 minutes & putting them back in seems to help with that.

I'm not quite following here mate. Custom made? As in, ear protection that was originally designed to provide hearing protection but that has been modified to carry headphones?

I've recently started to use earplugs because I can fell my ears aren't quite right. They hurt if I listen to anything loud for too long. Need to get some proper custom ones made. Can anyone recommend somewhere in Sydney?

My question... is even a tiny bit of ringing normal when there is no other sound in the environment? I've been to my fair share of loud concerts, festivals and clubs and find that when there's no other sound there is a constant ringing, but at a very low level. It's not distracting and from what I can tell doesn't affect my ability to hear other sounds. Is this just low-level tinnitus that I can expect to increase?

The other thing that worries me is that all of our senses are influenced by what we expect to perceive - they are not simply one-way processes. I tend to think that the more you read/worry about tinnitus, the more likely you'll be to experience it in some form whether you have serious damage or not. I'm not denying the existence of tinnitus at all - it is clearly a serious problem for a lot of musicians, but I'm talking about people who don't spend every weekend immersed in high levels of noise.

Here's a sample of what tinnitus may sound like from the British Tinnitus association: http://tinitus.mobi/files/representation%20of%20tinnitus%20sounds%2032b.mp3

If you can't hear them I'd be worried ;)

That thread has more posts than this one, and therefore is more important than cheese.

Check the bottom of the 2nd page (I think)

had tinnitus for about 9 months after not wearing my plugs for a one month period (I had always worn them at club gigs and when jamming with mates), for the last 2 years.

Trust me - you do not want. Invest in decent plugs - at least the Hearos HiFi style things ($30 or something). Now onto my second set of prescribed plugs.
Regardless, it's good to take a 5 minute break from the music every hour - kinda difficult to convince myself to do it though. :P
